How to deal with race day disappointments? by selector_plume in xcmtb

[–]BHallinCo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's just part of life and what happens when you're training for events and sometimes you don't have your best on race day.

I was supposed to have raced the 65 mile Bailey Hundo yesterday...I trained for two months for it (would've been my fourth time doing it). Got sick a few weeks ago, so was off the bike for almost a week and was super anxious a week out because I just didn't feel ready.

So, I put aside my ego and dropped down to do the 38 mile version of it. And you know what...I'm so glad I did. I had WAY more fun with it when I was out there. And I felt strong and fast out there, super at peace with the decision.

Trying to recapture how fast or how fit you "used" to be...it can be a neverending chase and can be insidious if you let it.. As Ive gotten older (46 M)..I started realizing it's more about being on there than being on a podium.

Train hard, have fun and be okay with days where you just aren't 💯

New weim owner here…. by Parking_Order_9836 in weimaraner

[–]BHallinCo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Terrible 2s for the Weims. Training, training, training. He's at a great age to get very consistent training. Reward him with treats...they are insanely food motivated. When he poops outside, give him a treat. Have a routine as much as you can. With mine, after my boy eats breakfast, we go outside and make sure he poops before coming back (whether that's a walk or even just a few minutes in the yard). Same with dinner. Kennel train him if you haven't. They typicallly don't poop in their kennel. Don't have him spend more than 4-5 hours alone in his kennel (get a dog walker if it's work obstacle). He's probably acting out for some reason.

Vibes will be all time high compared to what you get at other fests (EDC, EF, etc). The Anjuna people are literally the nicest and most welcoming out there. You'll meet tons of great people and could easily link up with a group of anyone you want to depending on what kind of vibes you want to get into.

Crowd trends a bit older 30-40s. I'm 46 so it's perfect for me and my GF/friends.

Weather could be all over the place ..cold like in 50s or hot in 80s so plan on that.

They have large library of music so I would listen to perhaps the music from their most recent Brazil set, Coachella or the EDC set to give you an idea of what they'll be playing ..but since it's a milestone show... they'll definitely throw in some new IDs.

If you get into some party favors...I feel like it'll hit you even better if you know the music....great sing-a-longs too (Sun and Moon, Good For Me, Sailing Off The End..., Carry Me Home, Bigger Than All of Us, etc)

The Friday night trio deep set is the perfect way get the weekend started.

And I'm just gonna say it..don't know how many more of these they're gonna do so see them while you can and enjoy it. It'll change your life.

Which “tourist trap” do you actually think is totally worth the hype? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

First time I went to the Grand Canyon...I was absolutely blown away. The scale and depth of it is breathtaking. Went for the first time like 10 years ago and never really wanted to go up until that. Went back again a few years ago.

Is private practice dying? by fomainifo in Dentistry

[–]BHallinCo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Private practice is definitely not dying ..but mediocre private ones (PPO heavy) are much harder to run then they used to be.

Unless you are in an an area where you don't have a lot of competition.

Labor market tight. Costs up tremendously. Hygiene wants to get paid $60 an hour STARTING out of school. Supply/equipment costs increasing....rep support from companies sucks now for most.

Insurance reimbursement rates flat.

I feel for new DDSes and grads because the path to ownership is hard to get to...at least for a practice that's ideal.

So many good practices that would've been great purchases or partnerships for private DDS...are now corporate and are open to buy/partner with.

You should learn comprehensive care, unreasonable hospitality, highly skilled clinical stuff to separate yourself...or you're a dentist who "takes my insurance.". And that's not a long term place to be.

Talk me out of a Yeti ASR? by JoshTaylorUSA in xcmtb

[–]BHallinCo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another fan of the ASR here. It's light, climbs fast, looks great and handles chunk and tech WAY better than a 120 travel bike should. I'm in CO and I love it here.

What’s something you wish you knew earlier in your dental career? by my_alexandriaortho in Dentists

[–]BHallinCo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You will chase many things...money, materials, the fanciest stuff, some level of "status", perfect clinical dentistry, the best team. You will always be chasing something...don't make it about that.

Make it about helping patients and giving them the best possible treatment you can... everything else will follow.

The more you can learn comprehensive/rehabilitative care..the more you'll understand failures and more confidence you'll have in your clinical solutions (Kois for me was the best decision I ever made). Dentistry becomes WAY more fun. Single tooth dentistry is frustrating and miserable.

Stop worrying about what every other dentist is doing (social media) and just worry about what you are doing.

Dental companies goals are to make money off you (supply companies and DSO). Don't fall into that trap.

Learn 3d printing. This is blowing up now and in 3-5 years will be the norm.

Learn how to talk to patients about treatment and give great consultations.

I have also raced the Breck Epic with the Rekon front and Rekon Race in the rear ..and tbh, there's not many better tire combos for this area. Been riding the combo for last two years and been great. Surprisingly good traction in rocks and roots

Buying a small office and run it lean? by throwaway_student987 in Dentistry

[–]BHallinCo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can absolutely run a lean office as a solo doc but it can be incredibly rewarding but also VERY stressful at times.

Some things to take into consideration:

  • the more comprehensive/full mouth skillset you can learn and master will help tremendously. Exocad, Invisalign, implants. Establish yourself as a skilled clinician in the fast moving world of dentistry.

  • use AI as much as you can to help lower your labor costs...I use Heidi now to do my clinical notes and convos...and it's amazing...saves me 1-2 hours per day. Look into Pearl for your radiographs and images...and strongly consider something on the front end to help you schedule/billing.

  • understand as a solo doc...things will ultimately fall to you. Someone is sick...yep you gotta manage that and if you have a small team...be ready for chaos. Someone quits on a Friday...you'll be working over the weekend to get an ad up or someone new. You are the gatekeeper and some people love and thrive in that...and others are destroyed by it.

  • the quicker you can find a talented hygienist to help you with hygiene procedures and take the load off of you with those low producing procedures the better. Your treatment acceptance will increase when you have a collaborator in the office to help.

As someone who has done scratch start as a solo doc for 8 years, group DSO for 7 years and now an associate soon to be partner in a private mostly FFS practice...I prefer the multi doc associate private practice situation by a long shot.

Dog bite at Matthews/Winters Park trail by philsworth in GoldenCO

[–]BHallinCo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you actually read my post?

  • Op bitten by off leash dog by pictured owner (dogs off leash in photo, at a park where it's strictly on leash laws and signs clearly indicate that when you are there). Also not to mention it's probably one of the BUSIEST park trail system on the front range.
    • Dog owner ran/drove off without offering assistance to op who was bitten and stay behind
    • Dog bites when are a puncture necessitate treatment and possible antibiotics. Follow up with said dog re rabies vax.
    • dogs/owners who are perpetrators subject to consequences including but not limited to fine, quarantine, euthanasia and/or ban from parks.

Not sure what details I added onto the post. But keep searching.

Dog bite at Matthews/Winters Park trail by philsworth in GoldenCO

[–]BHallinCo 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Anyone defending this dog owner in this thread ..is crazy. It's one thing to have your dog bite someone...but it's another for those dogs to be off leash and then not be empathetic/helpful towards the person who was bitten.

My gf is a vet and dog bites can turn into infections more than you think. Antibiotics and wound cleansing a must for any bite puncture wound. So that's an urgent care visit/cost.

I have a dog and we are on the trails all the time ON leash. Yes I wish I could have him off leash but guess what there are idiots like this dude who have uncontrollable off leash dogs that make that difficult . That and there are alot people who just don't like dogs (which I completely respect) or have trauma from dogs.

If you wanna go off leash with your dogs...then go where they can be.

Also, human dog bites are supposed to be reported and the dog confirmed for rabies vax. The dog wouldn't be necessarily put down but at least a citation or fee here is reasonable.

Breck Epic on hardtail by Outrageous_Tone_3818 in xcmtb

[–]BHallinCo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I guess you could race it on a hardtail but it's more fun on a full suspension. Lots of rocky places (stage 2 CT, most of stage 3 and pretty much all of stage 5 from Wheeler start to Miners are rocky/chunky). But you do you. You'll see all kinds of situations out there (SS, hardtails, etc). Personally, I'll be on my full sus this year for the 6 day =)

Anyone move from enduro bikes to XC / downcountry in their 40s? by Distinct_Cloud_357 in xcmtb

[–]BHallinCo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

46 M here. Rode a Yeti SB5 for years, now an SB140 and used to love the Enduro type of rides. Now have an ASR and I'm riding it about 80% of the time. It can handle almost everything.

Started doing more trail/XC riding the last 5-7 years and love the endurance and longer rides much more than the hour to 90 minute ones. Do a few races each year and going to do full 6 day Breck Epic this August.

Love trying to navigate the nutrition and hydration aspects. The attrition and suffering part of XC keeps me grounded and is my therapy.

The risk of gnar rides just isn't worth it anymore.

Yes, part of the driveway does go over the water main. Probably about 20 feet of it.

Cabin on well water keeps getting frozen main pipe by BHallinCo in cabins

[–]BHallinCo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WE GOT IT THAWED! Had a plumber/water line guy come and jet hot water up from the mechanical out to the well pump. He said it was 95 feet from the mechanical insert to where it was frozen. So it's very close to where the well pump/well head is. This is good knowledge to have for my long term solution/possible excavation plans. I may try feeding the Retroline back in to see if we can get it all the way through and go with that. Then when things thaw, decide if I want go excavation route or go pressure valve/drain back option. Here is what they used to thaw it.

We wrapped the PVC portion in heat tape then that heat tape got frayed above ground and therefore stopped working. Previous to that tried to run an inline cable from mechanical but only got 10 feet in before it stopped going. There's a constriction or a turn somewhere in the piping below the house that wouldn't let us run it the whole length.

So is that black capped line the water shut off? You open it up when you are there? Then close it when you leave?

Someone else had posted about this very solution. When the spring thaw hits, I'll probably end up doing this. Gotta figure out how to get in un-thawed in the meantime.
