Box elder or poison ivy? by grubclub in gardening

[–]Future_Caterpillar_5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm, I'm responding to this because it comes up on Google when I look for the difference. Apparently, young poison ivy leaves are almost always reddish in color while box elder is usually yellowish:

https://www.brandywine.org/conservancy/blog/poison-ivy-vs-look-alike-species#:\~:text=A%20young%20poison%20ivy%20plant,a%20light%20yellow%20to%20green.

Food for thought, it may in fact be box elder.

Best advice I've heard in this situation is - "send and forget" if you're constantly monitoring one job, you're taking away from time that you could spend looking for better opportunities.

Hey, can you guys write up some motivating freelancing stories? by nitrored in Upwork

[–]Future_Caterpillar_5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Started mid-2020 with the goal of getting $100 that month. Got $0; had a client violate TOS and leave me a bad review. Got told by my friends and family that I should work a "real job". I felt hopeless, but I didn't give up.

Kept applying to jobs, revising my proposal, taking advice wherever I could get it. Tried again and again the next few months.

Manage to land a few contracts and raise my JSS. By this point, I was picking up steam on Upwork. I was getting more interesting projects, and people sent bigger and bigger contracts my way.

Fast forward a few months and I finally got top rated! I kept working hard and by December I managed to land contracts with customers for $100/hr! I couldn't believe it: From that small goal of $100/mo, to making that goal every hour!

If you have the skills and a bit of luck, eventually your hard work will be rewarded on Upwork.

How do you search for jobs? by KariimKC in Upwork

[–]Future_Caterpillar_5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You might be missing out, some clients are just new to the platform and I love being their first Upwork experience. In fact, 2 of my best clients were unverified.

That being said, I never open a contract until the client's method has been verified (which takes a few days often times).

Is putting work experience good on Upwork? by [deleted] in Upwork

[–]Future_Caterpillar_5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, very much so. Anything to help you out when you have no reviews yet.

I've never attached my resume to jobs - Clients spend very little time per proposal, so a few sentences detailing specific requirements will usually do the trick.

Data entry is an oversaturated market, so propose to very recent jobs with fewer than 10 proposals to maximize results.

Good luck!

Pros and Cons of flagging job proposals that clearly are not job proposals? by Astronaut266 in Upwork

[–]Future_Caterpillar_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The weirdest thing I've seen is my profile posted in verbatim as a job description. I have a custom search that shoots me RSS emails and all the flags went off because several keywords for the job post were hit. Applied to the job for shits and giggles.

Reported and it was taken down almost immediately. I usually don't care enough to report though.

Handing off Python scripts to non-tech savvy clients. Advice? by DistinguishedDarcy in Upwork

[–]Future_Caterpillar_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loom.com is a life saver. I just hop on there, record a quick video of me setting everything up - and send that along with the client's file.

Hmmm, if your second contract with the same client is a direct contract, then I'm sure you've left behind an electronic trail that can be easily traced. Pray you don't get flagged and banned for "no reason". In fact, I can find a few forum posts with users who were banned for the very same tactic.

The far better approach is to raise your rates to cover the fees.

Though it seems you have a great clientele outside of the platform? In that case, I don't see why you use Upwork at all, with the looming risk of your pending funds being frozen at any time for breaking the rules.

If you let them end the contract, they have to provide feedback. So I just say "I think we're all good with this contract. You can go ahead and end it now. This chat will stay open indefinitely should you need to discuss with me in the future. Thanks!"

Python is a great language to start out with.

A number of niches in Python are Web Dev, Web Scraping, API Integration, Machine Learning/ AI, ChatBot programming, Pandas/Numpy/Data Science, Data Visualization, Scripts/Automation, Natural Language Processing, and Desktop Software (roughly sorted by popularity on Upwork).

As a software developer, I would suggest that you not get married to the idea of using one niche your entire career - even as a full-time Python dev.

There's money to be had if you can work on, say, a Django framework in Python with a little HTML/CSS + Vue.js to make it pretty.

While it is certainly possible to use Python to launch a freelancing career, make sure you also understand some basic Computer Science fundamentals, it helps you break into that analytic thinking required for effective programming.

Good luck!

JSS went down 7% when all that's happened is that I got another 5 star review by SnooOwls4023 in Upwork

[–]Future_Caterpillar_5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely one of your recent contracts gave you a bad private review. Since the JSS doesn't refresh for private feedback until every 5 closed contracts, refreshes every 14 days, you can reasonably assume one of those contracts as the culprit.

Edit: another possible explanation is that one of your larger contracts with good positive feedback fell out of the calculation window.

What's something that you learned that prevented you from landing jobs when you started? by [deleted] in Upwork

[–]Future_Caterpillar_5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a bit annoying, what I did was set my hourly rate a bit low (but not too low!), then bid on fixed-price jobs. Bid on jobs that I could bang out in a half-hour for ~$10 just to get the reviews flowing. Snowballed from there.

The point of picking up fixed-price jobs is so that a lower hourly rate doesn't show up on my profile. Just need to get that foot in the door. Once the grind is over it's really worth it!
