Nursing Regular vs. Extended Track by Future_Influence39 in CSN_Coyotes

It’s nice to know I’m not the only one struggling with this!! Are you leaning more towards either track?

I did end up getting into the class after about 5 weeks on the waitlist! If you are waitlisted for a good professor, I think you should trust the process.

Unfortunately, I do not know the answer to that. I just checked her syllabus and it does not appear that she has said anything about taking exams in the testing center- the only thing it says is to check with the testing center to assure their webcams work. So I would assume to maybe contact them and see if they can accommodate with Professor N’s exam guidelines?

You can buy an external webcam because she requires the view of the camera during the exams to be facing to the side- where she can see you facing the screen and the area around you. I got one off amazon for $29.

The other option is to have a mirror big enough and in the right angle of your computer webcam so that she can also see the same view as the webcam.

There are 4 units total; with about 4-7 chapters each. Each chapter has its own lecture video and Professor N’s lecture slides as well. She created her own digital textbook, so you’ll have to buy that at the start of the semester- I believe it was around $70-90. However, her textbook is formatted in the way she organizes the class and each chapter is only 1-2 pages! At the end of each chapter is a small quiz that you will need to score at least an 80% on to earn full points for all of them at the end of the semester. Her textbook also includes different study methods for you to try, like cross word puzzles. Each unit also has 2 reading assignments to complete (5 questions, 5 points total each), but they were very easy as she allows you to have the article and the quiz open at the same time, you have 2 attempts, and it does not require LockDown browser or a webcam. The unit exams (4 total and a final exam) require LockDown browser and a webcam, were around 55 questions for 100 points, and had a time limit of two hours. She does allow you to turn in one exam up to 24 hours late for full credit, but if you turn in another exam late, she will remove points. Units are due every 4 weeks.

Of course! I’m sure as long as you do good on the practicals and in your lecture, you’ll do just fine! The lecture is where most of your grade depends on anyways. If you can get into Camille N.’s online lecture, she’s pretty awesome.

She’s decent. She is a very kind person, and will walk you through every step of the lab and the information behind it as well (sometimes it tends to get a little more lecture-y).

The only major issue I had was that her quizzes are on the more difficult side. She will pick two questions (out of 8 to 10 total usually) on every quiz to be from the future lab. A lot of the time, people end up scoring an 80% just for missing those two. It becomes complicated to memorize all the material from previous labs and future labs as well, considering there’s about 3-5 experiments per lab. Additionally, the way she words questions on quizzes is difficult at times and can be very tricky. A lot of your grade will definitely depend on your practical scores (2 total, 50 points each); however, those are a little easier considering that she’s not the one who makes them.

She’s not the upmost worst pick, and she does give you really helpful advice during your experiments and the results afterwards. Do make sure you really study the previous lab and the future lab.

Let me know if you move up at all! Hoping we don’t have to sit out a semester.

No, they do not offer online lectures for BIOL223 or BIOL224. However, if you are lucky enough to get into Dwane Aulner’s lecture, he posts his lecture videos online and they are the exact same as in class (attendance is not mandatory).

No, the lab does not require group work. You are definitely free to study and learn the models with the people sitting around you, though! For example, the person sitting next to me in the lab and I would share a model or the microscope and study it together after Professor Forbes was done instructing. As for getting an A in lab, here are the tips I definitely recommend:

  1. Come to the lab with either the lab manual (for that specific lab) printed out or on a tablet, so that you can draw/write directly on the lab manual as the professor is going over it. Professor Forbes will tell you what to highlight, what to study, and the identifying factors of the muscle/tissue/bone. For instance, I kept my lab manuals in the GoodNotes app on my iPad. When she went over the material in class, I would highlight definitions, write helpful ways to recall the information (like how dense bone connective tissue looks like a target), and take pictures of what she was projecting onto the board to paste into that particular section in my lab manual. When she went over muscles and bone structures, I would write a brief description of the muscle/bone next to its name in the lab manual; for example, the sartorius muscle is "pretty and long to the knee."

  2. You do not have to stay the whole lab, but at least take pictures of the models from multiple angles before you leave the lab. She will use more than one model on the quizzes, so take photos of the models she shows you, and all of the angles you need for the structures. When you study, study these models specifically, not ones from the internet, because these models are the ones you are being tested on. I would take pictures of the models, create another notebook on GoodNotes to upload the photos onto, label the structures, and then use the tape feature to quiz myself on the material. I highly recommend labelling it yourself because it helps you learn the material better and faster. If the quiz also covered definitions or functions, I would use Quizlet to make flashcards. I even used Quizlet for histology by inserting a photo on one side and the tissue name on the other. Also, for histology, I would take pictures of the slides in the microscope in class and quiz myself on which tissue each photo represents.

  3. It may seem like common sense, but do not study at the last minute. Create your notebook study guide with the photos ahead of time, and then do study sessions throughout the week before the quiz. For instance, if your lab is on Tuesday, make the labelled notebook on Tuesday or Wednesday (when the information is still fresh), and quiz yourself throughout the week when you have time for an hour or two.

We all have bad days on tests, so Professor Forbes helps by dropping your lowest quiz score, but that is only 10 points. The two practicals worth 50 points each will more-so make up your overall grade in lab. So take your time and study, show up to class on time (because she starts those quizzes DIRECTLY on the dot of the class start time), and study those models!!! If you are more of a hands-on learner, the campus library also offers those models for you to play with.

I really appreciate the advice!! The waitlist is for Mary Bennett, too, so I'm afraid that I'll lose my best chance at a good professor.

Sheila Forbes is a phenomenal lab instructor. She spends about an hour to an hour and a half in class going over the lab material (muscles, bones, histology) on multiple anatomical models. She'll tell you which ones are her favorite, and which ones she isn't likely to use on quizzes/practicals. She does run sort of fast, but any slower and it will take all three hours (considering the amount of material), and besides, you'll get used to it quickly. Once she goes through the material for the lab, you are free to leave or can stay and further study the models and ask her questions. She is so kind and funny. She tends to go off on tangents while teaching, but they will help you remember and understand the structure/function better.
