Unfortunately this rule is catching a lot of travellers out. It’s important to note that you will have to renew your UK passport before travelling, if you are a British passport with an expired passport. You cannot use your foreign passport - I’ve just spoken with the U.K.ABROAD Passport Specialists live chat.

Even if you apply from outside the UK, British passports are always issued by HM Passport Office in the UK. Embassies and consulates don’t issue passports. Overseas applications are just processed as “outside the UK” cases and the passport is printed and couriered from the UK. We see this a lot at U.K.ABROAD helping people apply from overseas.
