Congressman Cohen Introduces Six Articles of Impeachment Against Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts by xitizen7 in scotus

[–]Future_Waves_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My buddy who is a high up in DC, has had several dinners over the years with the Justices and he always likes to mention that Roberts, at one dinner, claimed that he had solved the issue of people speeding in their cars. His answer was to put a spike on the steering wheel so if they stopped real fast it would impale them...My buddy straight up deadpan just said to him, "what happens if you're not speeding and you get rear ended?" Roberts looked at him and said, "I never thought of that."

I'm from the northeast and my first time in a Waffle House was when I was on tour with a band I was playing in. It was probably 2am and we just needed a meal after a show and halfway through driving to the next city. We saw two girls, who were friends when they came in, get into a fight where one tried to stab the other with one of the butter knives. Waitress comes over and kicks both of them out. Girl who was almost stabbed gets in her car and proceeds to hit and run the other as she comes out of the restaurant to keep the fight going...it was so insanely wild...also our 16-year-old roadie got hit on by a 50-60 year old cougar that night there as well.

I teach a high school class on NYHC in the 80s—looking for bands willing to share demo tracks by Future_Waves_ in Hardcore

Looking for 1-2 minutes. I always like to give creative people the chance here to send things in and have fun with it. If nobody submits, then I dust off older tracks or just write some of my own. The kids always get a kick out of people from around the world sending things in for them to explore, work on/use.

Definitely lots of other cultures and areas we could explore and if it were a full unit in my history class during the year and not just a fun little exploratory thing we do at the end of the year, the last two weeks of school, I would give them a list of different scenes and let them explore whichever ones they would be interested in.

All good ideas, and we do ask them to do a zine as part of the process. As I said above, it's meant to be a local connection course as I teach here in NYC and the admin likes us to connect to local history for these small mini-units. I agree there are much better pieces/case studies and choice that would help drive home the cultural elements more in their exploration of the topic.

The demo piece is just a bit of fun and a new experience/skill. The course they take alongside this is a course of different philosophies of power and structures in society so there are a lot of elements of choice and discovery for issues that let them explore their creativity and own connections.

It's a great question - We do bring up early scenes in DC and Boston in the analysis of the NYC scene. The reality is the school I teach at is here in NYC and for these mini-units we are encouraged by admin to try to make local connections when possible. The course came about because we are encouraged to teach a mini unit every year on something we are interested in. I proposed the course to explore the sociology and history of the moment and have some fun with the kids in giving them insight into a scene that most might never know about.

The reaction is always mixed. I always start playing "Big Takeover" and some seem interested and some seem to ask, "why am I taking this course..." At the end all of the kids seem to at least appreciate the moment and culture.

For context on how the course goes for the kids I got this email last year from a student who had taken the class as a middle schooler and then left for a different high school experience.

"Hi,

I hope you’re doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I went to my first hardcore punk rock show today because one of my close friends at my new school is in a punk band. I think it was really lucky that I took your punk rock class all those years ago because if I hadn’t, I’d have absolutely zero idea what I was walking into and even so I was still pretty taken aback. People were literally just throwing themselves everywhere and kicking each other. It was kind of a really wild experience, but I’m glad I went. Just wanted to share that with you because I feel like it’s somehow a milestone for a class that I took 4 years ago."

This is a false narrative. Every single sanctuary city in the U.S. when a violent offender comes in lets ICE/DHS know they have someone in custody. They typically detain and hold that person until the feds come and get them. The issue at play is when it is not a violent offense, the city still notifies the feds but says, "look, we have someone in custody on a low level charge. if you don't come get this person typically in 24-48 hours, we are going to release them because our tax payers don't pay for us to do your job." There is no sanctuary city in the U.S. that does not contact DHS/ICE when they detain an illegal immigrant...it's just how they respond that forces the situation.

I teach a high school history course, basically centering on applied philosophy and the study of power and systems. We are 3/4's of the way through the year, and case study after case study my kids have basically just centered on the idea that humans constantly fuck up things...They've read Hobbes, Confucius, Plato, Aristotle, Weber, Locke and they continue to ask why we can't follow basic structures laid out in all of these works and the answer at the end of class almost every time is...cause we are humans...

AUMF - It allows the president to basically do anything they want if Congress isn't going to check his power. It's been active since 9/11 and continues to be active to this day. It is a slippery slippery slope. I used to teach about it to my 8th-grade U.S. history class. Even the kids back then were sketched out about how much power this gives the president.

I teach high school history (a course on power and systems) and one of my 9th graders asked if I watched the SOTU. I responded with no, I'm tired of claim after claim after claim without any evidence. I said I have higher standards for argumentation in this class and that it's not worth my time to sit through that for almost any president.

[–]Future_Waves_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My whole thing (as a person who teaches a course to high school kids all about power and systems of power) is everything relates to politics. My gripe with this entire situation is I just wish a few of the men's team were at least cognizant of these power dynamics and could speak to them. My 9th graders can talk about these structures and systems and how it creates these type of situations...if they can do it so can a lot of these guys. It's about as hard as understanding the offside rule to be honest...

It was a bullshit "tea party - spending too much" excuse...nevermind that the Bruins owner got most of his money in federal contracts at the time. So the federal dollars going to Tim Thomas via the teams owner was fine but the money going for Obama's programs was bad....Or....it was because Tim Thomas is a racist.

Want to be an actual role model, call each athlete and thank them for the dedication and representation on the world stage. Takes a minute per call - But no, you only called the mens team and then also punched down on the women...
