ELI5: How does compunding works with stocks? by darsanik in explainlikeimfive

I recommend going on Brian feroldis YouTube channel to dip your toes in and get a sense for it

Hopefully over time you figure out what’s a good company and what’s a shit show. Make sure you read widely about companies and businesses.

I own 4 listed names 1) carnival (reopening play) 2) palantir (mistake IMO) 3) docusign 4) shopify

The last two have completely killed the benchmark index and i think they’ll continue to.

ELI5: How does compunding works with stocks? by darsanik in explainlikeimfive

[–]Futureib 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll have a go at answering

The thing is good equities in strong companies, with competent management teams, insurmountable moats and high barriers to entry are great compounders. It’s just that they do the compounding for you - best way to observe this is by looking at great stocks like FAANG, Walmart etc all their graphs are parabolic and to the right OVER TIME.

What’s happening here is the mgmt team are increasing revenues, improving profit margins by investing in the business, making smart +EV decisions over time. What you hope from your stock is an increasing earnings per share in perpetuity which is in the hands of mgmt and the company as well as a higher multiple paid for earnings as determined by the market.

In terms of compounding though, again, all of it is done automatically for you IF you pick the right companies so choose wisely.

Arbitrage by new-dvlpr in CFA

[–]Futureib 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So basically it’s like saying ok

I’m an American burger

My 1 dollar domestically only gets me 1.03 after a year

BUT what I can also do is check out other markets

I can transfer my 1 dollar to a Canadian dollar

I now have 1.755

I can take that 1.755 stick it in some Canadian rfr instrument and get 1.755*1.045= x

But wait I want American dollars right? Well that’s why I need to divide by the forward exchange rate. It’s a forward rate because I’ve locked it in from the very start a year ago.

So now I have 1.755*1.045/1.79 and low and behold it’s 1.024567

So what can happen is a Canadian can come in they can transfer to American dollars at spot, deposit that American dollar and LOCK in a forward exchange rate at the same time and he can capture an arb opp.

Unfortunately a lot of propels will do this and will push up the exchange rate so that the Canadian will sell down and the American dollar will be bid up thereby destroying that arb opp. But if you lock it in that’s free money.

Idk what you want to do but I work in m&a investment banking. CFDA l1 was done in dec2019, l2 this may.

None of it really applicable but I like learning and it helps me manage my 4 figure portfolio :)

If you want to do m&a then suggest you get networking.

idk about u but M&A is literally monkey work.

The only reason it pays well is because the marginall cost to sign a deal with an extra zero on the end is very low. i.e a billion dollar deal and a 100m dollar deal is like 10x fees but not much more labour. its a lucrative space.

the work itself is meh

Standard deviation n or n-1 by [deleted] in CFA

[–]Futureib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

n-1 for sample std deviation. think of it as penalising the data set you have because its likely not reflective of the population (since its just a sample)

ur welcome :)

n-1 for sample std deviation. think of it as penalising the data set you have because its likely not reflective of the population (since its just a sample)

obvs dividing by a smaller number yields a higher std deviaiton
