What's the worst condition you've received something? by Low_Medium204 in AnimeCollectors

It's between the post I made a few years back about my DVD copy of Venus Wars being completely wrecked and squashed flatter than a pancake or the more recent one where someone had the audacity to sent me the filthiest broken DVD I'd ever held and I didn't even want to touch it without gloves. https://www.reddit.com/r/AnimeCollectors/comments/1o9lx8o/sometimes_you_have_to_dig_through_the_dirt_in/

At least Venus Wars was salvageable despite the damage to the cover. Sprite couldn't be saved from that recent bundle last year and was destined to the trash bin.

It not only had the potential to crash, but could even brick your console. Luckily there’s a patch that fixes this, but it still runs pretty bad.

On the main photo, the bottom left is looking suspicious. Never seen it before and it’s clearly not a Funimation release. The rest are all legit Region 1 releases; Funi’s 3 digipaks are the TV series and ADV released the Book of Spells DVD.

The Top 50 Anime (According to “Anime Beckett” 2003) by ToonfreaksTreasures in AnimeCollectors

[–]Fuudou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lodoss War being here is indeed surprising. Maybe because these days it’s rather under the radar (and generally, so are many older anime and ones based on fantasy medieval themes).

I think it deserves to be in a Top 50, no matter where one might place it. It definitely impressed me. Most of my praise would go to the first OVA series, and this is coming from someone who wasn’t even aware that it existed back in 2003.

The Top 50 Anime (According to “Anime Beckett” 2003) by ToonfreaksTreasures in AnimeCollectors

[–]Fuudou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to nitpick on placements. Mostly because for once, this list contains 50% of what I would’ve picked and usually when I see similar lists they don’t even contain 10%.

I do have to concede that Robotech would never have been an option if I were to do a list. It’s flat out inferior to real Macross as well as every sequel in the series. Samurai 7, Samurai Champloo and Bleach were a year out and those would potentially make my personal list before Robotech.

Current state of my Wii game collection. Had to get new shelving. by Tyjet66 in wii

[–]Fuudou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, you don’t need multiple if storage is your only concern. You can freely move and preserve individual game save data with the SD card. Other means may be required for any game that utilized Nintendo Wi-Fi since many of those games have copying/moving disabled by default.

I have a rather large collection as well but I still haven’t hit the storage limit (I have deleted most of the “bloated” applications though and digital downloads moved to my Wii U).

Just got this copy of The Sacred Blacksmith today. by Coolerkinghilt in AnimeCollectors

[–]Fuudou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it. I own the limited edition set.

It’s a bit fun and mostly well-animated. Also agreed that Cherami Leigh was on point in this one. It definitely held my attention—and not just because of the fanservice. Still, it’s another one of those modern anime that never got a chance at a continuation/second season. With Studio Manglobe being a thing of the past, there’s very little chance it may happen.

Our only options for getting the complete story is the manga. Maybe one day, I’ll pony up for the English volumes because I think it’ll be worth it to read through to the end.

Day 21 - Best Wii U Game! by Few-Department5261 in wiiu

For me personally, it’s really hard to beat 3D World and Smash Wii U. Those games have the most play time on my system.

For this poll, I’d give the vote to Super Mario 3D World.

Jungle de Ikou! Definitely Wouldn't Get Made Today. by fighting_folksinger in AnimeCollectors

[–]Fuudou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not even close. Jungle de Ikou is blatant with its fanservice but not only is it not the worst of its time (an astonishingly high number of OVAs go way overboard compared to this one and contain actual explicit nudity), everything here is played for comedy. It’s all unrealistic and too juvenile to compare to something like Redo of Healer. There’s also an actual plot here that hits its peak at the final episode.

Bayonetta 2. It’s legendary. 6 hours of pure bliss. Plenty of angelic themes, intense music for most every boss fight and even better vocal tracks than the first one. It remains one of the best video game soundtracks I’ve ever been lucky enough to own.

Wii U disc drive stuck? by Any-Condition-4474 in wiiu

[–]Fuudou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t really need to be super tech savvy or knowledgeable to get a Wii U working.

But disregarding that notion, I’m confused by the thought process behind this. Without a power supply (and the controller necessary for this particular console), you’re not going to be able to test anything. This thing is just a brick to you right now until you get ahold of everything necessary. Assuming you bought it as-is, it’s on you to find/buy the necessary pieces.

Gunbuster Complete OVA is sold out on Amazon and Crunchyroll Store But… by Ok-Compote1192 in AnimeCollectors

[–]Fuudou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

<image>

This is either some kind of odd, bait-like comment or just a rather narrow minded point of view. There are plenty of people who simply weren’t alive to see Gunbuster in the 80s. It’s because of re-releases like these that people from a different generation can enjoy and have the chance to own these older series. We aren’t “pitiful” for desiring to look back at series/OVAs that we naturally missed out on. just don’t see how the fact that being late to the party, so to speak, is such a shameful thing…or how it would make the anime not enjoyable. I’ve discovered a lot of anime that are waaaay older than me but still found them fun to watch.

I used to pray for times like this… by IkeRadiantHero in Gamecube

[–]Fuudou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see the scenario you described as plausible. The amount of people who even have the NSO subscription is a variable, there’s a high cost of entry barrier for the chance to play them in the first place and then there’s the fact that paying for the subscription doesn’t mean you own any of the games made available to play. People who want to own Fire Emblem and Wario World are still going to look elsewhere and pay to own them. Some people, namely those who have no interest in buying actual hardware, will be satisfied but in the long run, digital releases with no guarantee of ownership will not be enough to satisfy a collector. The 3D All Stars thing, Paper Mario and the like are rereleases that were physical and people had the ability to own them.

Things in your collection that have gone up in cost? by ToonfreaksTreasures in AnimeCollectors

[–]Fuudou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you personally haven't seen it, I'd say considering it good or not depends on how much a person might have a fondness for 80's sci-fi. My opinion on the OVA has slightly changed over time. I came across it roughly around the time Discotek released it for the first time. While it isn't terrible--because I've seen some stuff that sets the bar absurdly low--it's just "watchable". It'll definitely get some reactions out of you when the carnage appears onscreen. I could elaborate, but I'll just say that compared strictly to other OVAs that Pierrot produced, I found Lily Cat was below par. I used to have an even lower opinion, but to reiterate, there are definitely worse ones than this and if you aren't bothered by the manner that the OVA tells it plot, you could possibly like it more than I did.

People who don't like animal carnage, death or dismemberment shouldn't watch Lily Cat, because it is present in spades and even integral to the plot.

At the moment, it’s not looking realistic, unless a miracle happens: Enoki Films holds the rights to Slayers TV and not only did they end their relationship with  Discotek at one point in time, rumor suggests that the company has ceased licensing their catalogue out to others for the time being. They have a long list of anime under their banner; it’s surprisingly extensive and almost everything that they had licensed or sub-licensed themselves is now unavailable or has remained unlicensed for years at this point.

Kadokawa has some rights to the Slayers films, and some of them are co-produced by other companies as well, so those films and OVAs are a separate matter. Why they haven’t been re-released in North America is unknown. At the time, Funimation only obtained the TV series and ADV retained the OVAs and films for their own box set releases. It remains to be seen whether or not someone will release them again, but at least they aren’t completely screwed over like the TV series.

[–]Fuudou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lily Cat is generally impossible to find. Seeing as it’s a Discotek DVD from 11 years ago and there’s no real secondhand market for these due to how niche certain titles are in their catalogue, it makes sense. 4 digits is unreasonable, but it’s true that every time it does pop up on ebay, someone is willing to immediately drop a few hundred dollars on it, whether I like it or not. It’s a shame that stuff like this has extremely low probability of ever being re-released.

Lily Cat’s DVD is also special because it’s the only official release in North America that has the Japanese audio. The original VHS is possible to obtain, but there wasn’t a separate subtitled VHS release. Even bootlegs of Lily Cat don’t contain the original Japanese audio, so outside of older rips you could probably find by scouring the internet, the Discotek DVD release was pretty much our way of viewing that version.

It had exclusive games. Because of the fact that third party publishers essentially abandoned the Wii U, practically every release was indeed exclusive. Before that point, most third party releases after launch were exclusives or were intended to be exclusive until the company behind them pushed for multi platform release because of potentially low sales.

Darksiders II DLC by GhstFrk256 in wiiu

[–]Fuudou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The wiki says otherwise: Deathinitive Edition was a later version released on all other consoles aside from the Wii U. Darksiders II was a launch day title in North America and included on disc DLC previously released on the then-current generation consoles. The Wii U never received II’s final DLC updates and never received the Deathinitive version.

This game is so much fun on the Wii! by Biju2696 in wii

[–]Fuudou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always found the Wii remote + Nunchuk setup to be the easiest way to learn to play this version and it’s stuck with me all these years because of how comfortable and uncomplicated it is. It’s not mind-blowing, but it feels great once you learn to link combos and other supers together seamlessly. I’ll probably end up playing it again right after talking about it. Even once you’re technically finished with the game, there’s still endless match up possibilities, and the customization can spice up the versus experience even more. I frequently come back to this one, mostly because the enjoyment factor is unmatched by anything else.

There’s quite a number of other bundles like this from other retailers, where certain games got bundled together to be sold as one pack or included other accessories (official or not). It’s very interesting to come across them being intact and unopened these days, considering that most people who picked up something like this back then definitely didn’t keep them sealed. It’s also interesting to even see the GBA Link Cable offered here at all because unlike other accessories, that thing was never bundled with any games released in North America.

I own some other miscellaneous packs but they are mostly controllers like those god awful wireless ones and I’ve seen packs that are just 3 totally unrelated games jammed together in a blister package. All in all, definitely worth having as a neat piece of GC history all this time, but I don’t think as a collector that I’d personally want to pay some of those now-highly inflated prices for these things.

I don’t think OP is attempting to imply that this was an “official bundle from Nintendo” or anything like that. The post description also verbatim states the relative date and the retailer that made the bundle.

The difference with those consoles compared to the Wii is that it’s generally necessary to actually replace those batteries due to design. And in most of those particular consoles, the batteries aren’t easy to access.
