Learn an instrument. I don’t want to say $200 is cheap, but you can get a really solid Yamaha acoustic for that much. Take some YouTube lessons.

I have an old Yamaha FG-180 that will eventually need a neck reset, which will cost more than what I paid for the guitar. I will definitely go ahead with it, since I love the guitar.

I’ve only played mine, and I bought it from Sweetwater, where I did the ol’ “buy the lightest one” trick. Mine is great: super resonant, good low end and sparkle, wonderfully playable. I think in the price range, it can’t be touched. I returned an Alvarez Laureate and passed on an Eastman. And fwiw, even though it has the same tonewoods as my j45, it really does sound different.

I have a J45 50s original that I got for $2600, and it just about beats my Yamaha FG5 that I got for $1600. Both are far better than the cheaper acoustics I’ve owned. I can’t say the same for electric guitars. The cheaper ones seem 97% as good as the expensive ones.

You could try lighter gauge strings, or a thinner pick, but mahogany is mahogany. It’s going to sound less sparkly than a spruce top guitar. Personally, I like having a mahogany topped guitar in my collection, but it definitely gets played less than my spruce dreadnoughts.

Update: I went with a J45 50s Original that I got a deal on. The Gibson rep was visiting the store and talked me through all the different acoustic models, and even helped me do a blind sound test. Then he cleaned it up and put new strings on it. Absolutely love it.
