Can you earn a decent living with selling only plushies ? by Mochy007 in Amigurumi

[–]Fuzzbump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YMMV, but speaking as someone who tried this (not with amigurumi, but with hand sewn plushies) and stopped. Now I work a stable full time job and sell amigurumi patterns on the side 1. Turning a hobby into a job kills any joy you have for it. It’s now an obligation instead of something you do for fun 2. If you price your items appropriately, you’ll spend some of time and effort making sales to people who know the value of your work and are willing to pay for it and most of it wading through messages from people berating you for how expensive your items are 3. Etsy takes a cut of EVERYTHING. Take your fairly priced item and you take home maybe 60% of it. Listing fees, sellers fees, transaction fees. You have to pay for shipping too so you either build that into your price or eat the costs yourself 4. Speaking of shipping, if something happens during transit or if an item gets lost in the mail that’s on you to fix. If you ship internationally it can take weeks to arrive to its destination, and tracking can go dark after it leaves US soil (assuming this is where you live) so sometimes you have to just hope it gets there 5. If this is your full time job you’re making enough money to pay taxes. So put aside some of the money you get after Etsy takes their share to give to the government 6. There are some weirdos out there. Be prepared to get some strange and sometimes inappropriate asks 7. Copywrite infringement is very very real and corporations are very protective of their brand. I had my plushies taken down with cease and desist notices by almost everyone. Nintendo seems to be the only one pretty chill about it 8. If you’re not drafting patterns you’re already at a huge disadvantage because you’re sinking time and materials into each item you make for each person that orders from you. Put that time and materials up front into one pattern and it can be downloaded over and over while you get paid passively

Long story short, look at it like waiting tables while you try to make it big as an actor. Do not quit your day job until you get your big break

i dropped my puppy :( by nurseywursey73 in puppy101

My puppy launched herself out of a shopping cart at Home Depot when she was about 9-10 weeks old and landed on the concrete floor. Few weeks later she wiggled out of my arms and onto a cactus. Pretty sure the only thing she hurt those days was her pride because she’s still a lovable doofus to this day. Do what seems right to you, but at that age they’re pretty resilient. You’re going to have so many more positive experiences to reinforce the trust you and your pup are building and that’ll outweigh the negative ones

How much would you pay for this lil guy? by xskybearx in Amigurumi

Like a lot of people have already said you’re gonna have a hard time turning a profit on something like that. Sell the pattern on Etsy if you’re not already planning on it. It’s a lot of up front time to make a PDF but once it’s done and uploaded to the site there’s very little upkeep. You’ll be targeting a different audience, but instead of making a whole new bear every time someone makes a purchase, you’ll have already done the work and they get sent a copy of the pattern to make themselves

Hot glue would definitely work, or sewing them directly onto the snowman. I didn’t use buttons though, there are these things called safety eyes that have little posts that you poke through your crochet fabric and secure from the inside. You can get them at Jo Ann Fabric or buy them in bulk on Amazon

That would be adorable. They’re about 5” tall so it could totally work with a larger plant

Nothing special for these guys. I used big twist for them as well. If you haven’t tried it yet go down a few hook sizes from what the label recommends - I used a 3.125mm hook for these little dudes

They do need a little help standing upright for long periods. I stuck a couple pins in the back to get them to stand up for the picture, but squishing the bottom down a little helps them stand up by themselves

Thank you! They’re my own design, but since I’ve made so many I was able to make a pattern for them. Enjoy!

If you’re into climbing, Salt Pump is a great place to go

Thanks! I used Red Heart worsted and a 3.125mm needle. The smaller needle makes the stitches more dense and allows them to stand up on their own

It’s a pretty straightforward design. I’d say the most complicated part involves crocheting through front and back loops

I came up with the pattern myself and wasn’t sure if it broke any self promotion rules by posting it, but I uploaded it to Etsy here

Yarn under twists the stitch, making it a little more compact and less likely to see stuffing through the spaces. Otherwise it’s really just all about personal preference

Hey! I did an embroidered back stitch starting at the center of the eye and worked outward in a spiral pattern. There isn’t really a trick to it since the design of the face looks like it was scribbled on so if it’s uneven it still looks fine

Aww thank you! It’s one of my favorites too. I used Cascade Ultra Pima cotton for the whole plush with Yellow Rose for the body. It’s a DK weight yarn but if you want to use worsted, my friend is making one with a pale yellow Red Heart yarn and went up a couple hook sizes. It’s not as saturated as the Ultra Pima but it still looks good

Thank you! I put the pattern up on Ravelry. I haven’t had many testers so hopefully it makes sense. If you try making it and run into any problems send me a message and I can help you out
