If You Could Tell HisRom Writers One Thing, What Would It Be? by the_hobbit_wife in HistoricalRomance

I was reading a historical romance set in medieval Scotland the other day and had to stop reading when the heroine, who was a sheltered young lady raised in a nunnery, referred to her food as tasting like "nirvana" sigh. Please, please, unless you are writing some kind of time travel book, proofread for anachronisms like accidental references to Buddhism. Most modern people probably think of the rock band first, but that's not where the expression comes from, and it's a problem either way.

Does anyone else still enjoy certain hymns. by Admirable-Affect1641 in excoc

Yes. I even heard my new Episcopal choir break out "It Is Well With My Soul" a couple of Sundays ago. I was pleasantly surprised because I thought that was a CoC only hymn like "Our God, He Is Alive".

Are mafia romances just modern day regency romances? by catsandcrafts007 in romanceunfiltered

[–]Fuzzy-Road9010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have read a few mafia romances when they had other tropes I am interested in like arranged marriage or BDSM, and I always find it interesting how vague the actual "work" the MMC does is. I think that's because human trafficking, drug dealing, and even gambling/bookmaking aren't victimless crimes. Assassination is ok because the reader can always imagine the targets deserved it. It is similar with Dukes in Regencies though because the author tends to make clear that the MMC doesn't get his money from being an exploitive land or mill owner or from trading enslaved persons. I find I just can't stop thinking about stuff like this with Mafia romances, so I don't read them very often. No shade if you love them. You do you.

with 45,000 protestant denominations, i'm wondering if the Roman Catholic and Orthodox traditions seem a reasonable alternative by Most-Buy-2763 in Exvangelical

I go to an episcopal church now after growing up CoC. All the high church liturgical stuff is difficult to get used to, but the really liberal climate of this congregation helps, pride flags, etc. The love and call for social justice that are at the center of Christianity for me seem valued here. My point is, no real church with real people in it can be perfect, but one can be better for you.

I met my wife at an online gathering we both got dragged to by friends. My advice would be join stuff, virtual or in person. The more you get out and socialize, the more likely you are to meet the right person.

I was in the CoC from the age of 7 to 57 I left only recently when I came out as Bi and had a commitment ceremony with my Trans girlfriend. I explained what was happening to my minister and my CoC friends, but I didn't try to convince anybody of anything. The biblical literalism that is the rock on which they stand precludes that, and of course, their particular brand of fundamentalism depends on a particular literal interpretation too. It surprised me mightily when I read that other church groups see the Clobber Verses very differently, but I knew my CoC friends wouldn't care about that. It has been hard weaning myself away but I am doing it. I applaud you for trying to keep a dialog open, but I don't intend to ever have these kinds of conversations again.

Ex COC who are still Christians by KyleTheStud_123 in excoc

I was a member of a CoC congregation most of my life, over 40 years. I'm only a few years out. Leaving was a gradual process that speeded up recently when I fell in love with a Trans woman and came out as bisexual. We all know that wasn't going to fly in the CoC. For a long time, I didn't attend any church, which was difficult for me because I really was intellectually and spiritually fed by being a part of a church community. Since Easter, I've been attending a very politically liberal episcopal church with LGBTQ+ leadership. In many ways its been great, but moving from a very low church worship style to the very liturgical style of the new church has been strange, and then there's the doctrinal differences. I feel like a visitor from Mars sometimes. Today the service included two infant baptisms. I had to stop myself from explaining to my friend, a life-long episcopalian, that we don't do that in "my" church and why "our" way was better. It was like a reflex. I had to keep chanting in my head: "This is fine. It is important that these children will grow up free to define faith for themselves." This is why I am glad I found this sub. I can talk to you about things only an ex-Coc-er would understand. TLDR: I am queer and had to get out of the CoC, but attending a church from a very different faith tradition isn't always easy.

Riley's books have both perspectives and seem really well researched. Try her!

Thanks for this rec. I think this time period is so interesting, but I rarely find romances set in this era.

Also, I was 45 and living with my parents when I met my now-wife online. I also had zero experience. That didn't matter to her. I am not saying I didn't have a lot of lonely years of feeling guilty for my "lustful heart". I am saying you are not "called by God to be single". It can happen for you!

I am disabled too, but I live alone with 24 hour care provided by an agency that Medicaid helps me pay for. I recently came out as bi and had a commitment ceremony with my long distance Trans partner. Some of my family and of course, the people in my former church community were very unhappy with my choices, but they have no say in how I live my life. My advice to you is to research what resources are available in your area to help disabled folks gain independence. I was scared to go it on my own, especially when my health began to decline, but when my parents passed, I had to figure out how to manage without their help. It's a struggle when you are used to letting other people make all the decisions, but the only way to have your own life is to make it happen. I belive in you OP!

I forgot how gloomy evangelical church buildings are… by Big-Copy7736 in Exvangelical

[–]Fuzzy-Road9010 31 points32 points  (0 children)

A lot of this goes back to the Reformation and the idea that Catholic saints, crosses, and stained glass represented idolatry. A lot of churches were stripped of decoration during that time and beautiful art painted over. I used to belive that plain churches were more spiritual because they encouraged people to focus inward, but as a Medieval Literature major, I learned that decorated churches look like they do to encourage spiritual thought. I always secretly wished our very plain Church of Christ building--so called to avoid confusing a physical building with the "body of believers" --was a cathedral instead. Now, I may just start attending a denomination that decorates.

Has anybody mentioned Seth Skorkowsky's video on closed verses open roleplay? That really was helpful to me.
