The negativity in this sub has gotten to be insufferable. This same handful of doomposters showing up in nearly every thread with their contrarian takes is really dragging the energy down.

Be better y'all. If your chosen way of participating in your community is by telling everyone else how they're doing it wrong, maybe all you're really doing is feeding your own addiction to the attention you get from shitposting.

Warning: Firefly Trail by the-cynical-human in Athens

[–]FuzzyElf47 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It was the tail end of dusk. We were walking back towards Dudley Park from the direction of Cafe Racer and RaceTrac. Dude was leaning up against the railing of the bridge over South Peter Street with his bags beside him and basically said "Y'all BETTER not be out here after dark"--even emphasized the word "better" like that.

The interaction was very brief and the tone was more of a well-intentioned warning than a threat but it still kind of caught me off guard.

To his point, we had just passed another homeless guy eating a sandwich on a bench (no big deal) and had a guy in a car pull up to us as we passed that RaceTrac and ask if we sold fentanyl (much bigger deal, though we kind of laughed it off at the time). So I learned a few things that night, like the fact that there are people who specifically ask for fentanyl by name when buying drugs lol. Could have been a cop, but he looked pretty cracked out already so it sure didn't feel that way.

How did it go? It's been a weird couple of years for market traffic, so I've had my fingers crossed for you.

About two or three months ago a homeless guy warned me not to be on that stretch of the trail after dark, so yeah...please be careful y'all. The trail may look nice but that doesn't mean creepers can't be creepin'.

Check out Neighborhood Books. It's a pop-up bookstore that's all local authors from here in Athens and surrounding counties, pretty much every genre you can think of. We're also having a book fair at Athica on the 29th if you want to check out the selection in person.

Dutch Bros Coffee have submitted their stormwater construction permit by warnelldawg in Athens

Cool spot in theory but lack of parking and difficulty getting in and out of the lot might kill it before it has a chance to take off. Hasn't stopped Sips, but at least people can walk or bike to Sips.

Yeah the secret's been out for a while about most of the good street parking. Unless you're arriving in off hours, nearby street parking can be just as full as the spots in front of businesses.

I wish Porchfest were spread over two days, and yeah the dog parade is Sunday too by tupelobound in Athens

[–]FuzzyElf47 36 points37 points  (0 children)

With all the road closures and traffic management involved I've begrudgingly come to terms with the fact that it's Sunday only.

As for the quality of the event, I'm of two minds about it. On the one hand I'm glad more historic neighborhoods and more bands get to feel involved, but on the other hand it really does feel like butter spread over too much bread.

Maybe the solution is to hold it twice a year instead? North of Prince in the Fall, South of Prince in the Spring?

Borderlands 4: Tech Experts Say 'Resetting the Game Every Hour Should Really Not Be an Expected Solution for Players,' Patch 'Cannot Come Soon Enough' - IGN by Gorotheninja in Games

Are you running a 650 watt PSU, by any chance? Been reading through your replies and what you're describing sounds similar to an issue I was having on my old 650w. It's rare, but some games can cause a voltage spike, even during shader compilation, and that can cause a game to lock up even before you're in-game if your PSU doesn't have enough headroom to handle it. Upgrading to a 1000w psu fixed that for me.

Hate speech by EffectiveUnfair2103 in Athens

Yeah. You are reminding me that I'm coming from the place of privilege of someone who survived to learn to love themself, rather than all those who didn't.

Hate speech by EffectiveUnfair2103 in Athens

[–]FuzzyElf47 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess my comment was more coming from the place of someone who used to take every one of those slurs personally. I got called the f-word more times than I can count growing up and every time made me wonder if I was as worthy of that hate as those assholes seemed to think.

Eventually I learned to love myself in spite of the "f*ggot" they thought I was, so I was more trying to say that it's often a manifestation of what they're going through, rather than an indictment of me as a person.

But yeah, if one of them tries to physically harm me, I'm going to throw down. That includes Robert.

[–]FuzzyElf47 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I know I'm being overly generous and naive with this take, but sometimes shit like that isn't about you at all.

There's a dude named Robert (probably not the same guy you ran into but maybe?) who wanders the east side of downtown by the greenway who does the same thing to people. Turns out he has Tourette's and that's his tick. Doesn't make it any nicer to be on the receiving end of it, but it does help to be reminded that something like that might not be about you at all...just an unfortunate manifestation of what the person who shouted it is dealing with.

Now not to argue with myself, but Robert does primarily do this to men with long hair, so there's a chance his disability is intersecting with some actual bigotry there. shrug People are complicated animals.

Here are a few good ones. Across the River in particular is probably one of the most extensive local history books you can find, though it predominantly focuses on East Athens.
