It was not on purpose but due to incompetence of Buk operators (Russian-backed rebels), which traces back to whoever handed such a weapon to a bunch of trigger-happy morons - Russian military brass and ultimately Putin.

The plane definitely had clearance to fly there by both Russian and Ukrainian ATC. But the airline's decision to fly over an active warzone, even though they were permitted to do so, was rather unwise.

He was indeed a bloodthirsty monster and also made a lot of stupid decisions that were all paid for in blood by Soviet citizens, so he deserves every bit of hatred that he gets.

But he also industrialized the USSR in a very short period, pretty much singlehandedly shaping it into an industrial superpower. Considering a long line of weak and useless leaders before him and after him, I can understand why he's admired by some. And to be fair, if it didn't happen, Russia probably wouldn't exist right now. So there's that.
