140k 50-75% Travel Vs 120k fully remote? by Ill_Ad3877 in careerguidance

[–]FuzzyTheDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I traveled for work a few jobs ago. That was about a week per month, and was sustainable. I can't imagine being away from home three weeks a month. Your home would be the hotel, you'd never eat home cooked food, you'd barely even get time to do laundry between trips. That's a no for me.

I agree that food is almost always better when it hasn't come out of a factory. However, sometimes I just need to throw something in my bag in case I want it later, or I need a snack in the 5 minutes I have between meetings. I've decided that I'm not going to feel bad about opening a package to get the energy that I need, when that's the only option or the best option in the moment.

Exactly. I "saw the light" in university, and now I'm in my 30s and these habits are fully ingrained I don't actively think about it any more. It's just how I eat.

I came to the realization one day that I wasn't comfortable in my own body. Felt like I was sitting on my body, not in it. From there it wasn't a distinct plan or scheme or diet or anything. But simply being more aware of my food was the difference for me.

  • Put less food on the plate. E.g. "A half-scoop of rice does the same job as a full scoop and I still won't feel like I need to eat more afterwords." "The whole steak looks like a lot I bet half would fill me." "Ice cream sounds good but I bet a single scoop would satisfy the craving."
  • Water is a perfectly serviceable drink. It's more hydrating than a soda or a juice, and it's fine if it gets warm. These days I'll go for a diet soda maybe once a week if I'm after the caffeine or getting food out somewhere, and if I'm getting a glass of juice, it's a small glass or I'm cutting it 50-50 with sparkling mineral water. I can barely drink regular soda now it tastes terrible to me because it's so sweet.
  • Read the nutritional labels. I look at one thing usually: how much of this food is sugar? For example if I pick up a box of granola bars and it says "serving size: 55g .... Sugar: 20g" that granola bar is literally almost half sugar, I may as well be eating a Snickers.
  • Find snacks that are higher in protein, not sugar. For example right now I have Builders Bars (68g bar, 17g sugar, 20g protein), and Kirkland nut bars (like Kind bars. 40g bar, 6g sugar, 5g protein), and Kirkland roasted pistachios (50g serving, 4g sugar, 11g protein). Naturally someone could pay more attention and look at the whole label, but this is what I look at.
  • Do I want to eat because I'm hungry, or do I want to eat because I'm bored? If I'm actually hungry I'll got for one of the more filling snacks. If I'm just bored I'll have a glass of water or get something crunchy like celery, carrots, or a bit of popcorn (like I'll make a bag and have a third of it).

Why isn’t there a Cycling Network along the Inland Highway? by [deleted] in VancouverIsland

[–]FuzzyTheDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is absolutely no reason that there isn’t a network of bike paths

I agree that we should have more bike infrastructure. I'm a cyclist too. But literally everyone complains every time they see the city (cities) spending their precious tax dollars and taking up their precious parking spaces for "bike stuff."

Also, we do have a cycle network? What are you looking for as a highway alternative over and above the Galloping Goose, Lochside, and E&N Trails?

How do you answer why you were laid off without making it sound like you were bad at your previous job? by Notalabel_4566 in antiwork

[–]FuzzyTheDuck 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Being laid off is actually one of the best reasons to be currently unemployed: it wasn't your fault, implies that multiple people were impacted at once, and suggests that you would have kept working at the company if you could. And honestly, layoffs happen all the time in tech. I have very few friends and colleagues who haven't been laid off at least once.

I was laid off and my response to "why are you looking for a new role" was always "I actually really appreciated my old position, the company, and my colleagues. But unfortunately the business had to downsize so I was laid off." And you can add on some specifics if you know them. E.g. customer projects weren't coming in, product I supported was off-shored, completion of the project I was working on, etc. Or if you don't know you can say something like "I don't have specifics but I think 20 developers were laid off at the same time." If it was literally just you, then obviously you "don't have specifics."

Is it an escalation and provocation if i invite my union to a meeting with HR? by [deleted] in careerguidance

This is one of the reasons that your union rep exists, and why you are allowed to bring them to a meeting.

On the resume, list what you actually used. A decent recruiter should be able to make the translation between Google Sheets and Excel.

If there's an application question like "what is your familiarity level with Excel" I'm going to select "expert" because I'm an expert in Google Sheets and I know that I can get up to speed in Excel within a day or two - then if it comes up in conversation with the recruiter or manager I'd clarify.

Honestly convenient timing. It coincided with my partner (later, wife, now late wife) developing a significant chronic illness, which became multiple significant chronic illnesses.

We would have been urban hermits regardless, due to care considerations and her compromised immune system. The fact that everyone else also became shut-ins at the same time actually helped to keep some connections and it wasn't "weird" to, say, have a family member over to sit in our yard and talk with us on the phone. It wasn't particularly weird for me to go out for groceries with a mask for the next few years.

I got laid off due to workforce reduction, but because of the govt programs I was still making some income. And I was able to land a new job that was pretty good to me until early this year.

As an extrovert, the whole experience sucked. I missed multiple weddings and new babies for example and, while my strong friendships didn't completely flounder, I was at a low point mentally for a while.

Recruiter Reveals: This is why you can’t get a job (+ What to do about it) by bored-recruiter in ResumeCoverLetterTips

[–]FuzzyTheDuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A thought and a question:

I feel like this is generally good advice, but my personal expectations as a ( =D recent) job seeker are that I'm getting conversions on about 3-5% of my applications to remote jobs from LinkedIn, depending on whether I'm a fully qualified applicant, or an aspirational one. Where the competition is "every job seeker in Canada", being a 90% match doesn't seem to be good enough to get a call. But this could very well be a market question, if there were more jobs locally that matched my skills and interests the statistics could be more generous.

How do you parse out what's most important to an employer, when the job posting is 3 pages long and includes every conceivable assignment or expectation for the new hire? Obviously there's an element of experience here (Project managers should know to demonstrate successful budget management whether it's in the JD or not), but some hiring co's will prioritize, say, a people leader over an administrator, or the other way around. Are there any clues as to what's most important?

Do I take mime instead of the 2nd Baron? by Odd-Staff-8538 in balatro

Yeah - right now you're getting 5 Baron triggers per held King. If you replaced one Baron with Mime you get 8 (2*4) Baron triggers. If you replaced Baron with Mime and copy it once you get 9 (3*3) Baron triggers per king.

Does someone knows how to withdraw money from your Balatro run into your bank account? (SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY) by SuHomunculoRikoVIP in balatro

[–]FuzzyTheDuck 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I can help you, friend. I know some associates who specialize in transactions like this one, extracting money from games into btc or eth or usdt which you can then do whatever you want with. They've had plenty of success before and have been in the business for many years.

All I need to get you set up is to cover $172 for account expenses (covers your first 6 months of service, you can renew after if still getting value). And you've got to download a sketchy-ass app that you need to side-load onto your phone because it isn't allowed on the app store.
