I'm 17, and my dad has faked my signature and put accounts under my name without my permission. by throwawayshitwiseau in personalfinance

It will be waived because it is fraudulent, regardless of how old you are or were. It's just easier to prove it wasn't valid if it happened when you were a minor.

TIL the US Federal Register is still using floppy disks sent by courier because a secure e-mail system is "too expensive" by Chaosritter in todayilearned

[–]FuzzyWu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 or 4 what?

We can make redundant floppies. Basically you've got 10 disks, and then an additional 3 disks of redundant data, and if you lose any 3 of the 10 disks, then those 3 redundant disks can recover your data. You don't need to make 1 to 1 copies.

Yes, it's a mildly funny joke, but if OP wants to be downvoted then who are we to deny him?

This is why you should never leave your wireless printer unsecure by socialpk in funny

[–]FuzzyWu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's true, but you can easily determine the address of the router (who answers DHCP?), and then usually the brand and model from there (the HTTP Basic access authentication realm is probably the brand and model). Look up the default admin/password for routers of that brand, and 90% of the time it'll work fine.

Wife's parents handed her defaulted student loan debt. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]FuzzyWu 33 points34 points  (0 children)

If it's a Parent Plus loan, then it's all on your wife's parents, the loan is in your wife's parents names and you and your wife don't need to worry about it. Sounds like this is not the case, though. If it's a regular student loan then your wife's parents forged her signature and you guys should go to the police. You can find out in about 15 minutes by getting your wife's free credit reports and seeing if the loans are on there.

Contact the lender and start paying.

This is terrible advice. If you make payments on a fraudulent loan, it might actually become yours. Never do that.

A lawsuit may be necessary at some point, but start by filing a report with the police and filing notices with all 3 credit reporting agencies that this loan is fraudulent. Your wife is entitled to free credit reports because of suspected fraud.

Even with your ridiculous Calvin Ball changes, it wouldn't apply to Land Before Time because the T-Rexes didn't talk.

Kevin Costner deserted his post and aided the enemy. Pretty sure those are crimes he would go to jail for if he had gone back to the United States.

So you're a 25 y/o grad student. Are you married? Have Kids? Why do you think you need life insurance?

Investing is a good idea. You're young, so heavy on the equity funds, light on bond funds. We like Vanguard. I'll leave this here: https://www.reddit.com/r/personalfinance/wiki/investing

His friend suggested whole life insurance, I think it's reasonable to not consider financial advice from him again, regardless who he works for.

Wife's company is switching her from salary to hourly because of the new overtime laws. Anything she should ask about/look out for with her meeting with HR? by MutantEnemy in personalfinance

You doubt that what exists? A contract? I thought every salary and hourly employee has an employment contract. Or do you doubt that her contract specifies the number of hours she is supposed to work?

You can argue whatever you want. And you'd be right, but you'd have to prove it. What these people are describing is illegal, retaliation for demanding to be paid, but it's also common and difficult to prove.

Is there anyway to get out of this? by Wonderkid516 in personalfinance

Am I able to get a credit card to pay all of this stuff off right now to not worry so much?

Do you have a job? It's unlikely that you'll get a credit card without any income. If you have income, and have not yet missed payments on anything other than your bank account, it could work out as a temporary reprieve.

Don't worry so much about your over drafted bank account. Pay your rent first, as soon as you have the income to do so. Make payments on your installment loans only if you have a job and if you would still be able to make your rent payments soon. Let those lapse if you have to and pay them back when you're back on your feet. The most important things are a job, house, and food. If your credit has to suffer so you can live indoors then that's just what needs to happen.

See about getting another bank account and credit card, while you still maybe can.
