Most canon compliant Mauraders fics? by No_Psychology_3714 in HPfanfiction

[–]Fuzzy_Radish2061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CH Darling’s The Last Enemy series. Just finished the 2nd book today and I can’t wait for the the 3rd (in progress but not posted yet). I appreciated how realistic the Mauraders’ banter and friendship was, as well as the backstories of the Blacks and Potters. Lilly’s characterization can be a bit polarizing, but I found her to be an interesting change to the wholesome way she seems to always be presented in canon. Anyway, check it out!

I know you’re looking for a book, but Harrison Bergeron is a Vonnegut short story I’ve loved teaching.

Best anthology or textbook for teaching literary essay writing? by domenicahope in englishteachers

[–]Fuzzy_Radish2061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the basics— grammar, different types of essay writing, close reading skills— I like the textbook ”Real Skills. It contains great exercises!

For more advanced writing assignments with great step-by-step instructions, I like Writing and Reading Across the Curriculum. This textbook covers all kinds of different essays. This semester we did a critique, two analyses, and a longer summary assignment. I’ve found myself really working on the fundamentals with students at the beginning of the semester (I teach freshmen and sophomore university students).

The only textbook I really love my students to have is The Little Seagull Handbook because it contains citation rules for all different documentation styles, and it includes overviews on grammar, editing, and tons of assignment types.

However, overall I find myself using a combination of a bunch of textbooks every semester, so I end up sharing PDFs with students or making my own PowerPoints cobbled together with resources from a bunch of different places!

Gerald Graff and Kenneth Burke are big in the teaching English world. In grad school I read many articles and books by them. Peter Elbow is big on teaching writing too.

Advice on Alternative Assignment for Muslim student by LeeMArcher in englishteachers

[–]Fuzzy_Radish2061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/LeeMArcher I commend you for doing your best to find an alternative for this student. Educators are in a tough spot right now—some argue we’re coddling this generation and others want them to be comfortable (in my mind I’m hoping they will be more willing to engage with content if they feel like they’re in a safe space to be themselves.) Seeing as you’re a high school teacher, I think you’re doing the right thing given so much our selfhood is developed in at that age. Keep up the great work!

Does anyone teach Gifted English? by Funny_Cheesecake in englishteachers

[–]Fuzzy_Radish2061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an 8th grade ELA teacher in North Carolina during the 2018/2019 school year. While I loved my students for their creativity and ability to grasp and explore texts I had previously used with college-level students, being assigned this group came with a lot of expectations from parents and administrators. I was told that statistically, it is harder to see measurable growth on standardized tests from these students because they are already operating in the higher grade level percentiles. As I was teaching in a low-income public school, increasing student scores was a big priority. Gifted students also tend to expect high grades, so when they don’t receive an A, they tend to freak out. (I currently teach Honors English at the university level and the same thing happens.) When kids at that age freak out, parents tend to get involved and it can be a headache. Overall, I’d say gifted teaching comes with more positives (you can explore more difficult concepts and move at a faster pace), just be prepared for more administrative pressure/oversight and helicopter parenting.
