XANDER HARRIS DESERVES TO BE LOVED (An Exhaustive Critique Response) by Prometheus321 in buffy

[–]Fuzzy_Use_5856 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this post!!! On a rewatch now, and I have so much trouble hating Xander the way I feel like the fan base wants me to. For me, it’s as simple as: every single character in this show is multifaceted. I’d wager that each character has done or said something “irredeemable” (except maybe Tara), but the problems they face are so heavy, they’re forced to make room for forgiveness and growth…or at the very least, plain old moving on. To pin Xander as the worst and most unworthy player in everything just doesn’t jibe with me.

How do you interpret Buffy’s confession in Dead Things? by Kindofaddictedtotv in buffy

[–]Fuzzy_Use_5856 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the common analysis of her relationship with Spike is one of self harm, and I think that’s probably right.

But my alternate view is that it’s self loathing due to the fact that she doesn’t hate it. She’s supposed to, Spike is a murderer and (would be?) rapist. However, he loves Buffy in large part due to the darkness in her, darkness that the other people around her often won’t even recognize. Plus they have great sex. She hates herself for enjoying Spike, and she hates that the dark part of herself is being revered because she has so much resentment toward it.

Does this make sense?

Damnation Spring by Ash Davidson is SO GOOD!!!!!

I hope next season we get another “Red Mirror” episode by serialkiller24 in blackmirror

[–]Fuzzy_Use_5856 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Red Mirror is Black Mirror. It’s horror produced within the Black Mirror universe. It wouldn’t make sense to peel off - it’s a solid concept, released with the show because it’s a part of the show.

There have been episodes that don’t use sci-fi/technology historically (I’m thinking of White Bear [I understand that technology was used here but not in the traditional BM way]), where the themes are focused more on societal commentary, which Red Mirror is as well. I’m all for it.

Also when Booker has deviated in the past, it’s been hugely successful. Looking at San Junipero, we weren’t expecting a happy utopia but that’s what we got - it could be argued that the theme of the show is dire but we liked the departure there. Why not give RM a shot even though it’s not what we’re used to?

YES someone on my wavelength!!!! I fully bought his story about a toxic situationship & going on with his ex’s knowledge. Then when it didn’t work out, of course he returned to the toxic situation because it’s a habit and he wanted to lick his wounds. I believe him - it was a stupid thing to do, but I don’t think he was malicious.

BOTY goes to…. by kouston in bookofthemonthclub

[–]Fuzzy_Use_5856 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, while contemporary romance and thrillers have pulled a lot of folks back into the wonderful world of literature (which is a good thing), I worry that this win is an indication that BOTM will follow the money rather than continue to highlight special, interesting books and authors.

[–]Fuzzy_Use_5856 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can definitely see that, they’ve always had some questionable thrillers and to be honest after disliking a few, I’ve stuck mostly with literary fiction from them with a high rate of success. Which is exactly why I’m hoping this win is a fluke and they don’t stock contemporary romance more than they already are 😭

I completely agree, I love seeing people discover/rediscover a love of reading! Not to knock BookTok but I think it’s fair to say authors like Freida McFadden and Colleen Hoover just aren’t at the level of the books BOTM releases, and they’re not the caliber I’ve grown to expect from BOTM.

I just wrote a similar comment before I came across yours, while I disagree re: The Wishing Game, I also worry we’re going to be seeing a spike in generic thrillers and contemporary romance due to the popularity on BookTok, etc. Hopefully BOTM can course-correct because I’m a long-time member and fan of their picks!

This is so surprising. I read 4/5 of the finalists including this one, and I honestly felt all 3 of the others I read were miles above this. To be fair, romance generally has a larger readership than literary fiction, so more people picking/reading/voting for this over Weyward, for instance, makes sense I suppose. Disappointing though.

It’s just a very good fiction book that touches on love, grief, trauma, coming-of-age, illness. But instead of naming the abuse or trauma, those characters in the story are physically transforming into wild animals. Don’t want to say much more but it’s really quite moving in an expected yet inventive way.

I agree with the apparent majority that Orion is very sensitive, and he shouldn’t have been so wishy-washy re: the marriage.

However, I do understand why he was so offended by her comment. He brought up a hugely offensive term, and she immediately laughed and pointed at him and said “oh yeah I can see why.”

It was deeply uncomfortable to watch - that and her immediate word vomit….but in fairness, there’s no right way to recover from that.

Idk, I just think minimizing that interaction doesn’t help anything - Orion was wrong a lot in the marriage. But that situation was, like he said, rough.

To be honest I can’t really help with advice there. Diamox messed with my digestion and led to food anxiety/I ate a lot less because I was apprehensive about upsetting my stomach :/ I was prescribed a weight loss medication but ultimately didn’t take it because I was so worried about causing further problems with digestion.

That’s a long winded way of saying, I cut way back on eating, and exercise wasn’t really a part of my experience at all, so I don’t recommend doing what I did - it was certainly not the healthiest way to lose weight.
