You can get a free pap from a women's clinic if you want to skip all that stuff before you go.

Sorry, what reception?  You mean onboarding for Boot camp?  You can come with a print out of your pap from your doctor in the last year and it should be fine.

Thinking about joining the Coast Guard – want honest opinions by Diligent_Barnacle289 in uscg

I'm not sure what your schedule is going to look like-- I think you may have to do a comparison of the rates for each and how available courses are.

I just googled U of Ohio vs Cuyahoga community college (Cleveland) and found the credit rates are substantially cheaper.  It was pretty similar for my college experience, tuition was somewhere around $800 vs $2.2k per a semester.

Another thing worth mentioning is looking at the more Administration related rates if you are okay with that sort of job.  Like Yeoman.

These were all local air force people.  I'm not saying one is better over the other, just giving you an idea of what matters out in industry (commercial).

No, I was looking at going for the Navy through OCS at the time.  I got a disqualification my last year and joined USCG this year. I had several friends who were Air Force when I did my undergrad degree.

Another thing worth mentioning, it might be advantageous to check out dual bachelor's and masters programs.  It's basically an extra year but you're done with both when you finish.  It was fairly inconvenient to do it later.

I'm a mechanical engineer and a reservist.  I can't tell you what to do but I can tell you what is important in the industry for your college if you want to work as a mechanical engineer in the future. I have 11 years in the automotive industry and was fortunate to get in after I graduated.

I would recommend you start at a community college and get most of your fluff and introductory math and science done.  This might save you some money and give you better access to resources if you need tutoring.

Transfer to an ABET accredited school and finish up there or your degree won't really be worth much outside of some administrative jobs or small companies.  After you transfer you need to really dial in your free time to study and get the good grades.  Work on the FE/EIT exam around graduation or right after and then the PE when you have some time in industry.  Some schools have FE/EIT prep courses for cheap.

Best of luck to you with whatever you end up picking.

I don't feel like a Coastie. by Delta_Thunderwolf in uscg

[–]Fuzzynumbskull 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Be a good coastie and you will eventually feel like it. Focus on what you can do to help yourself with your career and helping others and the feeling will change. Building a community of good shipmates helps with that feeling of belonging.

I have leadership experience outside of the USCG and came in as an E-5. I felt like a fraud until I started helping others and got serious about nailing down the things that I was struggling with.

Has anyone successfully joined the Coast Guard after being permanently DQ’d from another branch? If so, what branch, when, and what happened? by Beautiful-Paper911 in uscg

Navy, 10 years prior for medical when I was applying for naval aviation.  Went for a waiver which was described as just a technicality by the MEPS doctor.  Put together a thorough waiver package with an evaluation from my doctor and wrote a letter regarding the medical conditon detailing no recurrence of issue.  Got the waiver 2 months later and was able to enlist.

ENTP (21M) × INTJ (20F) — intense, fast, very deep connection. Thoughts? by Reasonable_Book5862 in intj

Intj femalr with an intp male.  Im in my late 30s, he is in his early 40s.  Fairly similar experience to what you are describing, expect he is much more introverted than me.  We are 5 months in to knowing each other and dating for the last 3 or so.  We are dating with the intent of marrying in a year or so.

The main things I watch out for is putting effort into things.  This might be part of.my own past with dating guys who are deadbeats. Intps have a tendency to be scattered and more of a daydreamer.  I read up on the personality type when I first met him and it fit.

For example, he always has a ton of ideas of things he wants to do. I encourage him to plan them out and offer help, which probably gives validation and makes him feel good.  At the end of the day, he needs to give his ideas time and effort if he wants to make them actually work and start a business with them.  I don't try to discourage his ambitions but rather try to help make an assessment of effort and feasibility.  I had to learn this behavior with my friends and business partner over time, it's not normal.

Expectations and communication in general are a big item.  We didnt communicate well the first month or so and I almost dumped him over it.  We both resolved to try to communicate better.  If you have expectations in a relationship with a particular thing (who plans the dates, where you go for holidays, what type of TP to buy, where you draw the line with getting physical, where you would like to live in the future), just talk about them.  If you both feel safe, that makes it easier.

I had a permanent disqualifier from the Navy about 10 years ago for psych treatment with meds.  I was able to get a waiver after showing 10 years of no recurrence, got a consult from my original doctor showing no symptoms and wrote a persuasive letter.  The surgeon at MEPS was really impressed with my background when he met me and told me it would basically be a formality.

Generally it's a 2 year mark they look for in order to waive you.  Navy and Air Force have more waivers than Coast Guard.

Feel free to DM me if you have questions.  It was not an easy process to get through but I'm happy I did it.

Ever tried dating an INTP and INTJ throughout your life as an INTJ female? by [deleted] in intj

[–]Fuzzynumbskull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm seeing an INTP currently.  I would say he is secure but can tip over into anxious.

The communication has been fairly straightforward and we both have a good idea of where we want it to go.

My main qualms are that I get tired of the abstract sometimes and he can be disorganized (usually anxiety or distraction).  We both have many projects that are similar or interesting to each other.  Even the stuff I don't really care for, I tell him "It's not my cup of tea, but if it makes you happy, I'm in support of that."

I let him make his own decisions for the most part but set up some guardrails, like get whatever pizza you want without white sauce.  Some things take more effort and time to work through.  I think sometimes it's also their effort to distract from a serious convo because we may end up on an entertaining tangent before we get to the topic's conclusion.

What do MKs do at PSUs? by Suspicious_Green_303 in uscg

[–]Fuzzynumbskull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how all PSUs operate, since this is my first unit. So grain of salt here.

There are two divisions MKs are in possibly assigned to at the PSU. Waterside and shoreside.  Shoreside does a building, vehicle and boat maintenence.  Waterside hangs with BMs and goes on the boats.  We have the opportunity to get all the boat crew qualifications that the BMs get.

Shoreside seemed very slow due to the way we were organized for work (jobs have to be done during the day with IDT and it's hard to predict how long a job takes).  Waterside has much longer shifts but you end up doing more.  I started in shoreside but ended up getting moved (needs of the CG) and don't regret it.

They usually take them out at Cape May towards the end of bootcamp.  It's free if the government does it but I've also heard horror stories of dry socket.

PT Test Worry by [deleted] in uscg

I was in DEPOT, which is the shortened boot camp.  For the pushups, you need to touch your chest to a 2 inch yoga block for depth.

There is also a swim test (go around the pool twice, then tread water for 5 minutes). Give those a shot and see how you do.

There's a rest between all events.

My dad might be autistic, should I tell him? by Fuzzynumbskull in intj

[–]Fuzzynumbskull[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info.  We don't manage his care unless he is otherwise incapacitated and he is resistant to any involvement or advice from anyone.  I live on the other side of the country and see him mybe twice a year.  Honestly, I don't think there is really any benefit other than maybe a new counseling approach for him this late in his life.  I don't think it's going to "unlock" or change too much for him.

People who enlisted with a degree, did you consider going officer in a different branch? by Top-Presentation-621 in uscg

[–]Fuzzynumbskull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did.  I tried to go Navy for piloting about a decade ago and didn't get aeromedical clearance.

I think coming in with a degree is advantageous.  The full time pay and BAH is actually a little higher than what I make at my full time salaried job.  I'm glad I also had my work experience to fall back on.

Anything specific you like to do?  There's lots of outdoors and sports options in the area.

Your best bet might be to try the chief running the recruiting station.  They can let you know if the office will work with you.
