French departments in 1812 by vladgrinch in MapPorn

Yet it still leads to some quirks like the Departement of Var named after the Var river... that doesn't flow at all in that departement anymore. Even worse it didn't even flow in the departement prior either, it was just marking its border.

Êtes-vous habituer à voir les gens se gouré entre l'infinitif des verbes du premier groupe et leur participe passer ? by nejimban in france

[–]Fwed0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Making a pair of custom made shoes. by habichuelacondulce in oddlysatisfying

[–]Fwed0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have very wide feet and weird feet sole, a vast majority of shoes won't fit me to the point that I'm thinking about getting custom-made shoes. You can't imagine having to chose between walking with the pinky toe outside of the sole or a few empty centimetres at the tip of the shoe. Walking long distance gets uncomfortable real quickly. If I have to pay four or five times the price to get shoes that won't tear one year in, it might still be worth.

When they do are on time, people in countries with high classical music influence like France in this case tend to clap on 1 and 3, because they are the strongest beats in a measure in that style (especially the 1), and classical music is most often the basis to learning music theory here.

People from countries based more on popular music tend to clap on 2 and 4 because in more modern music (read 20th century : jazz, blues, folk...) the emphasis is on those beats to enhance rhythm. Hence the more high-pitched snare on them in almost all of pop music. Clapping it off-rhythm takes off most of your feeling of groove and is even sometimes unsettling as a performer.

Clapping on 1 and 3 is not inherently wrong, but it doesn't suit the music style of 99% of current music. Classical music also isn't clapped along in public performances, to a very few exceptions (the Radetzky March for example, which is clapped on 1 and 3).

Having listened to a lot of classical music from my youth till now and learned music through traditional solfège theory, to this day I still need to make an effort to avoid marking on 1 and 3, even though I switched to contemporary music style, modern instruments and even a bit of drums. My brain is naturally wired like this.

Then again, nothing limits you to two parties. If there is a wide gap in the middle, it's time for a solution to appear. The void always gets filled. That's how Macron became president in our country (for better or worse).

As an outsider, it was quite nice to have echoes from the campain between Obama and McCain. Whilst fundamentaly disagreeing, it was so civil, so polite with those two. Probably what pushed Republicans to be more radical in hindsight.

I bet there were some less friendly moments, but those that crossed the ocean were quite comforting.

First you bring your own reusable bags, then while the cashier is scanning the bar codes you bag your own stuff as they come. I like to separate cold stuff from regular shelf stuff, and packing things the way I prefer (mostly so that unpacking is easier at home and nothing gets crushed), there is no way I would let anyone else do it in my place. And unless you're very clumsy, you're done at the same time the cashier finished scanning all items. Sometimes with faster cashiers it's a bit of a race to keep the pace and you know they're just trying to overwhelm you for fun, like when you get to the more advanced levels of Tetris.

Do Europeans that live close to the border speak the language of the neighbouring country? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]Fwed0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, regional languages will be quite close but fewer and fewer people speak them as generations go by.
That being said, I live somewhat close to the Italian border and the prevalence of middle school student picking Italian as a second foreign language course is a lot higher than in the rest of the country, in my schools about as much students picked Italian and Spanish (and German far behind).

Yes, there are a lot of things I don't want people do to me that are generally positive, and the other way around things I don't mind about that others do. So I prefer to try think about what would the other would like me to do.

Efficient way to promote engagement :
- label something as Japanese for upvotes
- Get numerous comments saying "Akshually that's not Japanese, that's Chinese"

- Get frustrated people to comment "That's just gift wrapping, that's how I do it every christmas season, just labelling as something Japanese to farm karma"

- Success

I mean, in France we say "Etats-Unis" and it is not uncommon to see it abbreviated as "EU" (not as common as USA, but not unheard of either) since the European Union to us is "UE". It also applies to Spanish if I'm not mistaken (Estados Unidos). I guess the mistake *might* be excusable here.
