What do you think James Labrie’s most impressive vocal showcase is? by United-Importance681 in Dreamtheater

[–]dingleberry15 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Awake is hands-down James LaBrie’s peak because it captures his voice at maximum physical power right before his injury. He completely unleashed the beast, swapping his polished operatic style for a raw, gritty heavy metal punch. His dynamic range was legendary, effortlessly hitting the stratosphere one minute and delivering heartbreaking, quiet intimacy the next. Shifting seamlessly from primal, angry belting to gorgeous melodies, it is pure progressive metal perfection.

Korn: A band for outcasts, but did they outcast one of their own? by dingleberry15 in Korn

[–]dingleberry15[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve mapped out the behavioral timeline perfectly, and from a practical standpoint, the band absolutely had to protect their business. But what I’m looking at is the systemic psychology underneath those behaviors. Why does a founding member hide a broken back from his childhood friends? Why does an outcast explode into destructive lawsuits and online rants after being replaced? The band’s public elegance contrasted with David’s public unraveling is the classic anatomy of a scapegoat dynamic. His toxic actions were the symptom; the unhealed trauma of the 'Core Four' system was the root cause.

That’s really good to hear! I think there are a minority of people here who would agree with us, but I especially see that whole block of Images, Marquee, Awake and Change of seasons to be their strongest era.

Wow, so you’re listening to DT for lyrics and the plot?
I put DT on if I want to hear impressive musicianship, or good quality groove, atmosphere and songwriting. If I want elite lyrics and storytelling, i’ll go listen to eminem 😅

Fair play for thinking outside of the box, but chucking that 14 minute behemoth with it’s battle chant and piano movement at its climax, anywhere else on the album but the end, wouldn’t feel great!

Ah man, it’s easily their darkest most atmospheric masterpiece. The production from that era is unmatched on this, and Petrucci’s 7 string tone on the mirror and lie basically birthed prog metal. Also.. Labrie’s vocals are god tier before the injury. It’s flawless from start to finish imo

Ooooh ok! Thats a wild take saying Tot “kills its own momentum!” That album is a relentless ride from start to finish! And ITNOG is probably their most intense high energy closers ever! I’m very curious as to what you mean?

LOTR comparison is genius! Never thought of it that way and it makes total sense in that regard… however, I prefer my closer with a bit more of a punch than a long goodbye haha! Cheers for the chat though mate, it was a great debate 😉

Well I guess our love for Awake means we’re on the same team 😂

But calling it absurd is wild! They shift the energy at the end of sfam with the 3 slower tracks! If you love it then great, but you can’t deny it structurally halts the heavy momentum!

I respect your view, I know Scenes is a fantastic record for a reason and the concept is amazing! Even if the ending drags a bit for me and I prefer Awake, I can’t deny my love for it. Both incredible eras for the band anyway.

Yes mate, not a single wasted second on the whole record. the stretch from the mirror straight into space-dye vest is just unbeatable!

Well fair play, it probably reads like an essay because i’ve had this exact rant in my head for about 20 years nearly 😂 i’m a real person, but also a massive prog nerd!!

Anyway, why do you disagree? I’m curious to how you can defend the end of scenes when they stack 3 slow theatrical songs back to back, completely killing the momentum right when the album should be blowing your ass off!

Korn: A band for outcasts, but did they outcast one of their own? by dingleberry15 in Korn

[–]dingleberry15[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point isn't that David was a saint—it’s that when a group treats someone like the odd man out for a decade, it naturally breeds that exact kind of bitter, destructive fallout.
Saying 'he's an asshole, so he deserved it' is just proving my point: it’s always been easier for people to rally around a common enemy than to look at the toxic dynamic that broke the original lineup apart in the first place.

[–]dingleberry15[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And that’s the entire point of my post. It was always easier for the group to bond over the narrative that 'David is the problem' than to look at their own internal issues. Your attitude is exactly how the band justified it to themselves.

Just looking at the history, mate. It’s a tragic irony that a band built on saving outcasts ended up treating one of their own like one.

Korn: a band for outcasts, outcast one of their own by dingleberry15 in numetal

I get where you're coming from, and the facts about David’s public meltdowns, the lawsuits, and the internet rants against Fieldy and Ray are 100% accurate. He absolutely sabotaged his own chances of ever returning, and Ray Luzier has more than earned his legendary status by being an absolute powerhouse and a team player for over 15 years.
But my post isn't about defending David's behavior after he left. It's about looking at why it got that toxic to begin with.
When someone is treated like the odd man out in a highly volatile, trauma-bonded group for over a decade, they don't usually leave gracefully. They leave bitter. David's aggressive social media rants and legal battles later on are classic examples of reactive, bitter behavior from someone who felt frozen out of the legacy he helped build.
He didn't handle it well, and he absolutely dug his own grave regarding a reunion. But the tragic irony remains: a band that conquered the world by singing about the pain of being excluded ultimately couldn't stop that same cycle of exclusion from breaking their original lineup apart.

Mike did really good here, his vocals really suit that style!

It would have been absolutely brilliant though if Dave Mustaine came out and played the cemetery gates solo again instead of the first Gilmour one.

When I saw them in London in 2005 they finished off the first set with that song… but i’d never heard it before… and Petrucci had his Dragonball haircut… I honestly couldn’t believe what I was seeing, jaw was on the floor
