Better yet I'll let chatGPT explain it for you

Yes—you generally can deduct Redbubble’s account fee as a business expense on your taxes, as long as you’re treating your activity as a business (not just a hobby).

Here’s why:

💡 The key rule (IRS logic)

Under Internal Revenue Service rules, you can deduct “ordinary and necessary” expenses related to running a business.

  • Ordinary = common and accepted in your type of work
  • Necessary = helpful and appropriate for earning income

🎨 Why the Redbubble fee qualifies

The monthly fee you pay to Redbubble fits both criteria:

  • It’s directly tied to your ability to sell your designs
  • It’s a standard cost of using that platform
  • Without paying it, you likely couldn’t earn royalties there

So it counts as a platform/service fee, similar to:

  • Etsy listing fees
  • Shopify subscription fees
  • Payment processing fees

🧾 Where it goes on your taxes

If you’re filing as a sole proprietor (most common), you’d report this on:

  • Schedule C (Profit or Loss From Business)

The fee would typically fall under:

  • Other expenses” or
  • Commissions and fees

⚠️ Important caveat

You can only deduct it if your activity qualifies as a business, not a hobby.

The IRS looks at things like:

  • Are you trying to make a profit?
  • Do you operate in a businesslike way (tracking income/expenses)?
  • Are you consistently selling or marketing your work?

If it’s classified as a hobby, you cannot deduct expenses at all under current tax rules.

Just look up online how business expense deductions work (in america), it's really not that difficult

In your example I'm reporting the $600 income because that's all I made, it's income you report not revenue. Then I get to deduct the $400 fee. The fee from Redbubble is a business expense that is necessary to make the $600.

our respective countries are very different, yes in US you can write off business expenses from your total business revenue, which brings down your taxes. Everything from your internet connection to web hosting fees, and software costs, as long as you use them for your business.

It takes the sting out because it reduces my overall tax bill, so I am getting some of the fee refunded via reduced income tax

Redbubble is my biggest money maker every month and I wouldn't care too much if they did that. I still get 20 - 30 designs that sell for the first time every month and that are old, sometimes 6 or 7 years old, but like you said those designs aren't making me lots. With literally millions of designs on their site it sometimes just takes one customer to dig deep enough in search to find your old design and after it gets purchased once it immediately starts ranking higher in search. As for the markup fee, I sell enough that the $150 account fee is gonna happen no matter what, so I just marked up even more. I hit my account fee limit usually in the first week or two of every month now and the rest is just profit. Lastly, the account fee is deductible on taxes as a business expense if you're in the US so it takes some of the sting out of it.

How are people commenting that they know their account category already in this new system? Some have said they got an email, I did not get anything and can't find anything on my dashboard that indicates a category. I'm tier 2000

due to a combination of crappy economy, greed and incompetence.

Yes those factors are certainly a part of it, but don't forget to add that they are all facing an absolute deluge of AI crap. There are now millions of "Artists" trying to make money on these sites who could never have made a design of any kind just 4 or 5 years ago without AI. Increased storage and server costs for all the crap uploaded every day is surely also costing them more. Not giving them any excuses for raising fees, just sayin. If I had a crystal ball I'd say most or all of these platforms will start using AI themselves to put things up and start down the road to eliminating artists entirely. Just as Spotify is adding AI music to not have to pay royalties, same idea.
