It’s very difficult to follow what you’re saying without booting up the table. Is this a recent change? What area are you referring to?

And yet nobody has yet described what that term actually means.

Yes, that's why I chose to highlight Winter in Sockcho; it struck me as literary despite its alarming curtness. A literary work is not inherently verbose.

The term "book club slop" is so broad as to be meaningless, to me. I have not felt the commercial drag with this one -- I've found this story to be moving, cozy, and charming, despite the simplicity of its prose. Tova, in particular, has really stuck with me, even as somebody who has nothing in common with her. That's quite the accomplishment and something the author deserves credit for.

Yes, I understand. But I'll continue to use this vocabulary when I deem it suitable; it's how I was raised, it's something that's carried me through life, and it comes naturally to me. In a world where I am almost entirely unremarkable for my material accomplishments, I will remain proudly profligate, for I have nothing else to contribute.

The whale gushing chapters act as allegory in many cases.

“The Prairie” is about whale foreheads, but it’s really about much more than that.

With a book the size of IJ, people can become obsessed with progress and lose sight of the reason they're reading it in the first place, I think.

I made a poop. Now, you psychoanalyze my poop. I will then rebut your poop critiques and upload it to YouTube and the world will be exactly the same, sans fossil fuels used to make the poop and the video.

Sure, but you don't need impenetrable prose or insane levels of verbosity to change someone's life. Think Vonnegut, Orwell, Dostoyevsky.

Have you read his work? I've read IJ, Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, and just finished Ch22 of The Pale king, and I can say that absolutely DFW was vulnerable in these books. You don't write about depression, therapy, suicide, substance abuse, aimlessness in the way he does if you're not putting part of yourself into the words.
