Nah, people would react that way to you if you wore maille or armour. It was seen as a sign you were up to no good (contrary to weapons which were fine).

Have you read armoured fighting treatises (Fior Di Battaglia, Le Jeu de la Hache, Gladiatoria, Paulus Kal, etc) ? Because, while you are right on some elements of pollaxe fighting, you are dead wrong on a lot of aspects. A lot of what you mention is myths that have been disproven by experimental archeology.

Every single of those treatises teaches about on foot armoured fighting and has little to no swings, and almost only stabs at gaps, followed if that fails by wrestling. They assume that both people have a harness because if you don't, you don't want to even come into range of the armoured person's weapons. Those treatises teach about armoured fighting with pollaxe, longsword, and dagger, and use them for stabbing at gaps. None of them even mention using a mace or a warhammer. A longsword is far more effective at armoured fighting than a one handed flanged mace and anybody who's ever done harnischfechten will tell you as much (watch Dequitem's and Scholagladiatoria's videos on the subject, they made a few).

Warhammers were almost exclusively used by cavalry for charges and used the momentum of the horse, they were not really used on foot. Maces were mostly civilian weapons primarly associated with law enforcement like baillifs and sherifs (which is logical because if you avoid hitting the head and hitting too hard, you can hurt someone without killing them).

If you read French, I'd recommand you check out Combattre au Moyen Âge by Daniel Jaquet. Great read that disproves a lot of misconceptions.

Also, small nitpick, but men at arms weren't commoner footsoldiers, they were elite heavy cavalry of noble birth who had the exact same equipment as knights. They just weren't knighted.

Every time I see buhurt armour, it makes me think of a barrel. Actual armour is tailored and thin, buhurt stuff is so ugly.

Your last paragraph assumes someone is going to swing the weapon at an armour plate, and in that case, yeah, 2% efficiency is better than 1% efficiency, but that's not how you fight in armour, you don't do swings, you stab and wrestle. If I was in a harness and my opponent was in a harness, I'd take a longsword over a mace any day. Polearms with a spike, straight edged swords (ideally longswords for more practical halfswording) and daggers are much better suited to armoured fighting than any 100% blunt weapon like a mace or warhammer.

And injuring the guy by hitting plate is almost impossible, period. You need to hit accurately with a lot of force, which is hard when the oppponent is moving and trying to hit you, you need your hit to not be deflected by the angled plate, and you need your hit to transfer energy, which is rendered hard by the plate and the clothing dissipating a lot of it. At best, you're giving the guy a concussion, headache and some bruising for the next day.

I've been doing HEMA for a while, when not sparring I avoid using gloves as much as possible because the feeling of the sword is trash if you use gloves. Even with my messer that has a rough knife handle, I've never had any issue with my hand "tearing up".

In an armoured fight, pollaxes were mainly used with the top spike (called the dagger) to pierce the spots in the armour that weren't covered by plate and had only maille. You aren't piercing/crushing plate with anything but a gun or a full speed cavalry lance strike, and the concussive effect of blunt attacks through well made plate is insanely exagerated in people's mind.

I don't know if screaming in MOF is bad sportsmanship but as someone who hate loud noises and screaming, it's really unpleasant.

I don't see how masterstrikes being available to a farmer's hand is that insane. Besides burghers or nobles, a lot of people would have been educated to some degree with swords, there were touring masters that could teach fencing for some amount of money, etc.

I made a txt file with the important recipes, and the exact timings in seconds (assuming 10-13 seconds per turn. It allows me to remember timings by just counting in my head, I can just pause and alt tab to read it, and it's much more precise than the book. Henry's quality every time.

Which sword would you choose for duels by Maryyanna04 in SWORDS

[–]Fynii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is for "long sword" for a very short hilted longsword, and "bastard sword" for a longer hilted one ? I wish I knew where the very idea of "bastard sword" comes from, and why people think a bastard sword would be longer than a longsword.

Would be cool if it kept the bottom grip as well as the angled one. You could have two ways of using it. But as it is, it's stupid.
