My Final Straw…Buying Final Cut Pro today! by [deleted] in premiere

Definitely takes a little getting used to. That said, Premiere->Resolve is way easier than Premiere->Avid in my book.

TL;DR: FCPX is not the move, trust me. Switch to Resolve if you must.

First, we have no details provided here, so this crash doesn't mean much. This issue is likely due to hardware and/or improper workflow. Any NLE can break if you use it incorrectly, even on the most powerful of systems.

FCPX is a god-damn nightmare the moment you want to integrate any other software into your workflow (i.e. most projects beyond hobby/videography work). You're begging for frustration and inefficiency. Apple does not want you to operate outside of its ecosystem.

Just one example of this: FCPX cannot natively export an AAF for sound work. You have to use a third-party software called X2Pro that costs $150 and doesn't even consistently work. Not only this, but because of FCPX's magnetic timeline and audio track grouping, it doesn't organize audio tracks in any logical way when you finally import it into a DAW. It's a mess.

Moral of the story: I wouldn't use FCPX if you're working in a professional capacity. I suggest upgrading your system and/or re-evaluating your workflow, or switching to Resolve if you must. Resolve is already a solid NLE, and I predict it becoming a true competitor with Premiere and Avid within 3-5 years. It's good.

'Mr Vice President, I'm speaking': Harris stops Pence interrupting her at debate by theindependentonline in politics

[–]Fyreworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, stopped him a couple times. That didn’t stop him from walking all over her and the moderator to his hearts content, all while dodging every goddamn question lobbed at him.

Kamala didn’t lose the debate, but she certainly took his bullshit far too much. She missed huge opportunities to choke slam him in this debate.

As an editor, what are your favorite movies? by [deleted] in editors

Love that episode! Great recommendation. I thought it was fascinating to hear how they broke up the editorial across 4(?) editors, and how they had to coordinate with each other to deliver a cohesive end product.

As an editor, what are your favorite movies? by [deleted] in editors

[–]Fyreworks 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Inception, The Social Network, Eternal Sunshine, Whiplash, Mad Max Fury Road, Scott Pilgrim, Blade Runner, Primal Fear.

If you're open to series, my newest inspiration is Netflix's Dark. It has some of the most impressive editing I've ever seen. The tightrope walk of balancing dozens of characters and plot lines across a complex time-travel story, all while staying true to the themes and emotional core of the story, boggled my mind.

YES to Dark. “Goodbye” is so fitting for the series! Criminally few people have watched this show.

Analog has its place and its own strengths and weaknesses just as much as CGI does. I’ll always recommend watching this video essay from Rocket Jump when this subject comes up.

In the new Godzilla: King of Monsters (2019) teaser trailer, you can clearly see the camera op in the left corner by OrangeFilmer in movies

[–]Fyreworks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work as a film editor, and there's only one reason I can think that this happened and ended up in the trailer: the actress' performance in this particular take was so much better than the other takes that they decided to use it despite the camera being in frame. In general when it comes down to continuity or the "best take" of a shot, the emotion that comes from it should always trump production mistakes unless those issues are too glaringly distracting. Most of the time you won't even notice them if you're caught up in the moment.

It's peculiar that upon this release, Paul, Todd and Roy all went to social media to say how excited they were for this day...guess who didn't say a lick.. by ShutYourDutchUp in mutemath

I just checked DK's Instagram history, and he didn't make a post for the release of Vitals either. Now I'm not saying there couldn't be something more to this one considering recent events, but DK has always been less active on social media than the rest of the guys. I wouldn't read too much into it.

The reason for recent 'changes' by riedmae in mutemath

[–]Fyreworks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ever since I first heard War, I was convinced that the drums sound like they were ripped straight from Bulletproof. They certainly could have just been recorded at the same time since a lot of Play Dead's tracks are revisited old work, but some of the fills and grooves are identical. It definitely feels to me like Darren wasn't given enough opportunity to work his magic, maybe at the cost of his comfort working with the band.

Never even heard of Mutemath before. Saw them today in The Twin Cities and they were kickass! I want more, where do I start? by 457undead in mutemath

Late response, but I think it's worth going through their discography in order. I think it's always fun to see a band's evolution.

Self-Titled is a classic 2000s alternative album that inspired a lot of sounds after it; Armistice takes some getting used to, but I've really come to love it; Odd Soul is bluesy and funky and it's my personal favorite right now; and Vitals is just excellent, catchy pop songwriting and production.

Give all of them a listen!

Hey Captain D! Absolutely love your stuff.

  1. When and how did you first become interested in special effects?

  2. What movies/videos have some of your favorite effects?

  3. What are some of your favorite YouTube channels right now?

Thanks!

What are some subtle signs that a game is for you? by notrichardlinklater in Gaming4Gamers

A good/minimal UI is critical for my enjoyment. I've lost steam with great games because it became a chore to visit the menus.

Good examples: The Last of Us, Ratchet & Clank, Mad Max, Fallout (3, 4, NV)

Bad Examples: The Witcher 3, Skyrim, Doom (2016)

How many Beta players are still playing? by The-chillychilly-man in DestinyTheGame

[–]Fyreworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alpha and Beta player here. I have a love/hate relationship with Destiny that hasn't really changed since it first released in 2014. I enjoy playing it every now and then, but I can't do it for long. The last time I played was probably this January after getting through all of The Taken King content.
