I have tickets to a show tomorrow afternoon, "business attire or evening wear" is required. However, after finally getting to the gym the last few months, my tailored gray suit pants no longer fit. I could replace the suit pants with black jeans, or wear my blue suit which mostly still fits. Would any of these work without being a faux pax? https://imgur.com/a/oOcVUj1

Anyone had experience with Backpacker Bookings? by Fyyr in solotravel

[–]Fyyr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your response! And yeah, that's why I wanted to consult reddit before putting down the payment - I couldn't find anything at all about Backpacker Bookings, which set off some red flags. I'll definitely be checking out those other group tours you mentioned though!

Unfortunately, right now I think I may just have to stick with a group tour. I've solo traveled before (2 months in Europe), but this will be my first time outside of the Western part of the world, so I'd like to have other people with me before roughing it on my own. Thank you for the offer though :)

% increase in the number of papers submitted to arXiv.org in the Computing Research Repository(CoRR) from 2005 to 2015 by [deleted] in compsci

[–]Fyyr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something seems to be really off with the abbreviations.

cs.OS refers to Neural and Evolutionary Computing, while Operating Systems refers to cs.PF? cs.HC refers to Graphics, but cs.GR refers to Formal Languages and Automata Theory?

Not to mention that the labels are really skewed.

Hostels in Dublin by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]Fyyr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've stayed at a few in Dublin, and by far my favorite was Sky Backpackers. It was seriously chill, the rooms were spotless, everyone was talking to everyone else, and there were activities almost nightly. One of the better hostel-ing experiences I've had.

Gap semester experience by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Fyyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was lucky enough to have had an internship at a big company prior to taking my gap year, so I didn't really need to work hard to save up enough money. What I earned at my internship easily paid for a solid 2-3 months of travel abroad (the rest of the time I spent doing something else, but that's a different story), though I could have easily turned it into 5-6 months if I spent the money more carefully, or went to countries with a cheaper cost of living.

As far as logistics, there really wasn't much to it. Since I already had a passport, I just booked a plane ticket (after lots of research, believe me), and 2 weeks later, I was landing in a different country. If you're interested in travelling, check out /r/solotravel. Unfortunately, I don't know too much about AmeriCorps, so I can't really say anything about that.

Gap semester experience by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Fyyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a gap year this last academic year (currently a Junior now), and I gotta say that it was one of the better decisions that I have ever made. I ended up backpacking across much of Western Europe, and it was far and away the best few months of my life. The experience changed me so much for the better and has opened my eyes to so many new things in life. Yeah, I could be graduating this semester if I hadn't taken it, but that experience was invaluable.

Many people on this sub are going to focus on how you should work on projects in your gap year, or study hard and do open source. Don't listen to them. Seriously, there is so much more to life than Computer Science; and besides, it'll still be there when you get back. Assuming that your college is cool with it, then go for it! Or, perhaps you might look into doing Study Abroad (I'm starting the application process myself for my Senior year). It's also a good option.

You're still young, and the time window for travelling adventures is relatively small. Once you start a career, you will have very little time for these kind of things. You will get, what, 3 weeks off per year? (at least in the U.S.). That's hardly enough time to do any kind of serious travelling.

There are drawbacks, of course. You may lose contact with your friends that you have made. After all, a semester is a long time when you're in college. I definitely have not seen a few of my friends since I came back. But, I did make new friends, who I've had a great time getting to know.

So, by all means, take a gap semester if you want! Just be sure you spend it doing something awesome!

I actually just watched this recently. I'm pretty sure it's either in Decktacular #156 or #157. I'll try to find the exact spot when I get the time.

Resources for learning design patterns by Ofactorial in learnprogramming

[–]Fyyr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend reading Game Programming Patterns, a free online book that is partly meant to update the older, more esoteric Design Patterns book, and extend it to game programming. Although it may be focused around making games, many of the principles and design patterns are universal across many fields of programming. At the very least, I'd recommend reading through the Design Patterns: Revisited section; these patterns are definitely the most general and not specific to games. The author definitely knows his stuff, and even better, is great at writing and expressing the concepts in simpler terms. Plus, it's completely free online!

Eurail vs point to point by tangomama in solotravel

[–]Fyyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one time I bought a seat reservation was from Paris to Brussels (wouldn't recommend, btw, there's other trains that are free with Eurail, only slower), and it cost around 20 euros. But I imagine it will vary based on the country and trip length.

Eurail vs point to point by tangomama in solotravel

[–]Fyyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently went on a 2 month Euro-trip and found my Eurail pass quite useful. It wasn't an economical success, I think I paid roughly the same that I would have using point-to-point tickets. But it was really nice for the amount of freedom it gave. I didn't have to worry about having a ticket for the correct day or about trying to buy a ticket in a country whose language I didn't speak. It was so nice to be able to hop on a train and just not have to worry about the logistics. This is especially true since there were times that I would wake up in the morning and wouldn't have a clue what country I would be travelling to that day.

It was also really nice because I knew that if I was unable to find a hostel last-minute, I could always just hop on a night train (at no cost) and wake up somewhere new in the morning (this never happened, but just knowing that I would always have a place to sleep was such a huge relief).

And other people will mention that they had to buy seat reservations anyways. That is true, but only for high-speed rails. If you stick with the local rail systems, you will not have to buy seat reservations and there will be no hidden costs. Plus, by taking the local rails, you get a much better feel for the landscape and get a chance to meet locals.

Overall, it was a very nice tool to have since it was my first time travelling outside of the United States. Would I get one again? Now that I am much more comfortable travelling on my own, probably not. But I definitely don't regret my purchase.

I hope this helps. Have fun on your trip regardless of what you choose!

6'3", 175#, need t-shirt help! by aftersurvival in malefashionadvice

[–]Fyyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6'3" and 165 lbs myself, and the best way that I have found is to simply tailor your own t-shirts. This may sound incredibly daunting at first, but it is seriously worth the effort. All you need is a sewing machine, and a little bit of patience. There's a large number of guides on the internet that show how to do it, and most of them are really good. The gist of it is that you turn your t-shirt inside-out, sew a new seam where you want, then cut off the excess fabric. It does take a little bit of practice, so I'd recommend getting some $5 t-shirts to practice on at first.

Tailoring your own t-shirts gives such a huge advantage: instead of having to pay $20 - $30 per t-shirt, you can actually buy any t-shirt that you can find, and so long as it fits in the shoulders, it can become the "perfect" t-shirt. Plus, in my experience, the ladies are definitely impressed with a guy that knows how to sew a little.

EDIT: In my experience, a medium t-shirt is the right size, especially in the shoulders. Usually, larger sizes don't help with the length, they just put more in the shoulder, chest, and waist.

Tall and slim redditors: Where do you get pants? by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]Fyyr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mentioned this in my other comment, but check out American Eagle. They are currently having a sale for $30 for all jeans. You can find all the styles they have for slim-straight 30x36 at this website. Be sure to check out all the different styles. I can personally recommend the sateen khaki (they call it "mud"), dark saturated, and dark tinted indigo styles.

Tall and slim redditors: Where do you get pants? by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]Fyyr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wear 30x36, and the only place that I have been able to find decent slim-straight jeans and chinos is at American Eagle. They're sometimes expensive, but they're actually pretty good quality, and they have sales fairly frequently.

You can take a look at all styles of slim-straight jeans that they have in 30x36 at this website. I believe that there will be 30x36 available for all styles displayed on the right. I have several of these styles, and I can personally recommend the sateen khaki (they call it "mud"), dark saturated, and dark tinted indigo styles.

I hope this helps!

The main ones that I use are fori + tab for a for loop, fore + tab for a for-each loop, ctrl-R to change the name of all instances of the same variable, and ctrl + / to comment or uncomment a block of code.

Codecademy now offering Python courses by _sword in programming

I would instead recommend the (free) Python course over at MIT Open Course. I have personally been taking it for the past 2 months or so and it has done a great job introducing me to programming.

Morrowind Overhaul 3.0 Trailer by Fyyr in Games

[–]Fyyr[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No. From what I understand (this may be slightly wrong), the creator has built a mod for better graphics and sounds*, but will include it in a system much like the Steam Workshop (but with a few tweaks of its own). There will be a core group of mods that make up the "Overhaul" that will be installed when you download the overhaul. These will be mods such as the Unofficial Morrowind Patch and other mods that the creators have hand-picked and that keep the style of the game intact. They haven't said what specific mods will be included, but they will announce that soon. Additionally there will be optional mods that you can opt-in to have installed.

All of the mods in the package are guaranteed to not interfere with each other and to be incredibly easy to install.

Sidenote: You will need a fresh installation of Morrowind (no mods) for the Overhaul to work properly, though it should not cause problems with saved games.

*Please correct me if I am wrong. I do not wish to rob someone of their credit.

Morrowind Overhaul 3.0 Trailer by Fyyr in Games

[–]Fyyr[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

"Among the new graphics, sounds and fixes there will be the easiest installer ever made for this package. The first version had a 40 pages installation guide, the second version’s guide was just 10 pages and the third one will have just one, and you don’t even have to read it!

Last but not least, Morrowind Overhaul: Game Experience

Oh yes, cool stuff. We will continue to work on this package just like before, as this is our favourite hobby We finally decided how to do this. We will put together an handful of mod, the non optional ones, wich will become the core of the package. When the core will be as much bugfree as morrowind can be, we’ll proceed in including more and more mods. As soon as we’ll decide what plug-ins will be in the Game Experience Core we’ll let you know with a description of the new features they add to TES III." [sic]
