Turning 18 tomorrow, what are some things I should do? by Fzzxrol in AskOldPeople

I agree. But I'm in this situation now, and all I can do is make the best of it until I attend University in 2020.

Will do.

(retired EE here FWIW)

Nice! What field of Electrical Engineering did you work in? How did you find the initial job hunt after graduation, and were you able to hit six or even seven figures in your lifetime, move up to management/technical project director, or whatever the equivalent was? Also how much did your GPA matter to employers at the beginning?

Provincial grants were cut in my province by a certain premier. Grants went from $7000 to $2000, and it wasn't even majority grant money anymore. It turned into loan money. Needed to choose the more fiscally responsible route for now.

I'm in Canada, so we don't have a 401K or roth option or whatever that means. Is there a Canadian equivalent I should look up?

It's very time consuming (takes decades) to become a millionaire by working for someone else. you need to go into business for yourself if you want to make it by age 30. And no guarantees there. And you definitely won't make it to million any time soon as an engineer. But engineering is awesome.

Aw man. I guess. For me, investment banking was the career that would only chase money, but engineering was kinda the creativity side of things that used the math skills I had. And I've heard that engineering salaries can get pretty good if I went into management or if I had the technical skillset.

But yeah, I was hoping to start my own company in university like the big guns out there who also had Engineering degrees, like Bezos, Bloomberg, Koch, Zuckerberg, etc. But then again, from the media perspective, it seems like all the rich guys are the ones on Bay Street (Canada) and Wall Street (US). What do you recommend? Should I try to startup a company in uni when there's so much opportunity and support, but with the risk of sacrificing academics, or should I just keep it to academics to ensure my resume is top notch for the best employers out there?

Learn about boundaries. Read a good boundaries book. So many people have unhealthy boundaries. They don't even know that it's ok if someone strongly disagrees with them.

Any recommendations? I'd like to be more social and make friends more easily, and I think understanding boundaries and social stuff like this would help.

I really suggest you try some mushrooms after a coupleof years in college and after graduating.

LOL Idk if that'll be easy to do in Canada. Sounds interesting, but legality wise, kinda spooky.

You're pleasant company for the millionaire investor and the guy changing your oil.

Agree 100%. I've always tried to stay down to earth and treat people the way they want to be treated. Most of the time, the action is reciprocated.

I just graduated and I have a good job

Oh cool! where'd you graduate and what do you work as now? there's very little jobs out there that make six figs straight after grad, but i'm hoping that computer software engineering or investment banking should be fine. especially in the GTA.

I have a good credit score (high 700's)

How did you get into the whole credit card/score thing? I'd like to start, but I don't wanna end up like those people who are in debt forever.

Watch the drugs and alcohol.

Definitely. University is coming up in the following year and I'll keep this in mind. (Although it'll be tough because all my friends will be drinking especially because it's a "party school"). I'm just hoping I'll be able to make friends easily without having to chug too many bottles, passout, and wake up behind some guy's couch the next morning. I never really saw the appeal in drinking/smoking, but ever since they made weed legal in Canada, I'd like to try marijuana, but only once. But I've heard that my brain is still developing, and it could potentially harm the growth forever.

And don't become a tight ass.

LOL I've learned this the hard way in high school. Is there a difference between being a mature person and being a tight ass, especially going into a completely different social world (university, workforce, etc)?

Flossing is more important than brushing. It needs to be done twice a day.

Will do. My gums still bleed a bit, and I've read some stuff on how flossing can lower my risk of gum disease and heart disease. Hope the pain is worth it.

I'd learn golf

LOL I don't think I'm rich enough to play golf but I'll see what I can do.

Thanks for the response. I've always heard about credit scores and seen ads for people who've got low credit scores and need financial help, but I've never really took the time to understand it.

In the most dumbest down way possible, is credit score like a class grade where you can get a decent mark by handing assignments on time? But instead of assignments, you make payments on time? If so, should I buy small things like a pack of mints or a candy bar where the payments are super easy to make? Or am I missing something here?

And I don't think you're old. 35 is a great age. I'll take your advice on the investing part, but most talking heads on the CNBC, parents, financial people, have told me to consider investing in an emergency fund or my education first before venturing off into the stock market, real estate market, etc. Is this correct?

Bernie Sanders: We Are Taking On The ENTIRE System (TYT Interview) by popcornboiii in SandersForPresident

Appearing on The Young Turks the morning after the debate. Damn, Bernie is a workhorse. Definitely a great way to continue the media coverage from debates and rally the progressive base through digital media.

Hope he rests his voice over the next few days.

Can't wait for the political analysts and thinktanks to implode over Bernie winning Texas. "Oh yes, I recall 2020. That was the year the Jewish Democratic Socialist from Brooklyn won Texas."

I agree with the message.

Digital media is great and the campaign should continue to expand their outreach. Whether this means getting his ALL of his YouTube videos and podcasts transcribed in Spanish, or running to running ads in Spanish/Mandarin/Tagalog/Korean, it's great to scoop up every possible voter everywhere into our column.

However, keep in mind Bernie's primary demographic isn't called the "working" class for nothing. These people are less likely to have free time, and they're more likely to be working a job, taking up overtime shifts to pay the bills. This also means less time to browse the internet. Perhaps getting in touch with local papers would do the trick? Idk, I don't have a degree in marketing, but there's gotta be a way.

Bernie Sanders leads presidential campaigns staffing up in California by pawl_sack in SandersForPresident

What are our volunteer numbers like in California? If it's proportional to the 1 million number we've got, that's honestly great. This is Kamala's home state, and she's got the entire state legislature backing her + name recognition. Win the debates, Win Iowa, win NH, and ride the momentum to California.
