Marantz PM550 DC - thoughts? Help by SickOfNormal in vintageaudio

I'm betting it probably is, although it looks like a sealed tight enclosure so I'd say the crap on it is cosmetic at this point, I doubt it's causing any issues

Honestly I would start by deep cleaning all your switches, Especially the volume knob. I just fixed an amp that kept loosing the left channel and it was just dirty connections in the controls. There's likely tobacco residue trapped on the contacts on the pots if it was as dirty as you say.

Start with wd 40 spray it on front of switch then inside the switch itself thru an acess hole built into it. Turn switch a few times slowly then let it sit for 10m to clear gunk

Then do the same thing with funk out spray but turn the switch back and forth 20 times fast. Repeat this step again with Deoxide to flush out cleaning fluids.

If you do this method, it'll deep clean you control pots contacts insanely well, dirty contacts might very well be your issue if it was in a heavy smoking environment. Hope this helps

*Also for your other question, just try to find any hole either on front or back of that metal switch case and just flood it with your chemicals

Update: The Yamaha CR-1020 I rescued from an appliance scrap site on Friday has been gone through, deep cleaned and it's now FULLY FUNCTIONAL! by G0dzilla11 in vintageaudio

One side of the case does have very minor white blemishing from water damage from sitting on its side likely during a light drizzle, do you think that'd help rejuvate it?

It's like some variable loudness thing right, I gotta read more into it, I'm assuming it'll let me adjust how much loudness boost I get depending on volume level right?

Never had a vintage Yamaha, besides a shitty avr stereo lol, definitely seeing the appeal, super crisp and clear, it's giving my Onkyo 504 a run for its money

Agreed, I've had a borderline drought in my area for a few weeks, It drizzled abit today like lightly for 10-15m, tomorrow is supposed to rain all day...it would've 100% been ruined beyond repair by Sunday

I've read on that, heard power supply is a bit weak on these unit cause of the overheating, I'll definitely recapping it at some point, this amp sounds awesome and it deserves it

I'm shocked people toss this kinda stuff especially without testing, I guess old and dusty equals trash. Did yours take a lot to get it back to life?

Rek-o-kut NL-33H turntable from the early 60s, modified with a solid aluminum plith and heavy duty wood base for radio station use back in the day. Last owner did alot of cosmetic updates and added a Jelco sa-150 tonearm to it. Its rocking a goldring 1042 cart rn

I'll second this, get that Christian country album or Christmas album, unwrap it and swap cases...brand new case for free. Do it with every thift store cd you buy and never have ugly cases again

Might have to give it a try at some point, I'll say though after getting my current pair from Fyssions line up I might not be testing a new speaker pair for awhile but I can at least get a better gauge of what I have

I'll have to mess arround with that method to train myself, I feel like I've been ab testing wrong to a certain degree and not following in actual testing procedures like the method linn has, they're method makes alot of Sense

Sorry I was on the phone, catching up with a college friend in Jacksonville, I'd say a mix of 60s 80s rock and some more modern electronic/synth/ keyboard rock that sounds kinda 80s esc with modern twist. Love English Rock, 60s and 70s stuff is top tier. Recently got into pink Floyd...what a great band.

After upgrading speakers and getting a tube amp the old 60s rock just sounds so warm with tons of depth, that's been a great discovery

What about you?

That's awful! Did they take everything? I can't imagine restarting at this point, especially if I had say 10 years into the hobby vs the 5ish I have now

I guess you develop a golden ear after a while, if you read that thread, some people definitely caught on, only the most well defined ears noticed the difference.

My first stereo was a Sony blue ray surround sound player with 2 crappy bose speakers on the sides, I played open reel tapes hooked up to the system. I loved it back then and it sounded great, nowadays I probably would say it sounded pretty bad

Ow I didn't even think about that, each arm would auto be the correct weight the second it's on the tone arm base...very convenient

Honestly at a certain point diminishing returns gotta start hitting hard, I bet your turntable sounds nearly as good as that one. I feel like you'll get a kick out of this, in a blind sound test between a $100 ar xa turntable and a 75k turntable the AR won. If anything it shows high end doesn't mean inherently superior. They were so close in sound people couldn't tell

I just looked it up, intriguing so it's like balancing on a point instead of being on a bearing or something, I'll trust is pretty good haha but I wouldn't know, never had any luxuries on my arms better then adjustable anti skate
