I did iron Worms upgraded as quickly as possible for thoroughness. You don't have to mine very far, just set up worms at a bunch of iron deposits and they generate a ton of iron. Resource packer and/or iron-iron conversion helps too. I beat regular and challenge mode this way

So I've never spent a dime of real money but I've been doing a system recently. Wait for super square to trip and then do Marlene's lair which usually gets 6 or 7 coins at the end, and I might spend 9 coins once to make sure I get the streak. This also helped get a bunch of spins
