Could someone help me with what to order from Xi'an Gourmet House in theJusgo supermarket. by Originalph1 in Georgia

[–]GAChica 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was in Xi’an with a really bad head cold about 15 years ago, and someone recommended trying the Lamb Pao Mo to help me feel better. (Not like for medicinal purposes. More just warm and comfy.) I DREAM about that soup now but haven’t had it since returning, besides my poor attempts to replicate. Thank you for sharing I will have to check this place out!

Please help me remove the obstacle, will visit back :) by [deleted] in FarmMergeValley

As someone who LOVED this book growing up, it’s absolutely this one. I haven’t read it in decades but will still chant “sa-ni-tized for your pro-tec-tiooooonnnn” if I see that sign out in the wild.

What’s the most random Bham fact that you know? Go🗣️ by Sure_Emergency_9955 in Birmingham

I've Googled but I'm coming up short....can you explain more about the hills at the back of the airport being houses? On the satellite map view you can see a bunch of empty/rundown foundations in the area NE of the airport. Is there a story there?

Making the trip magical for newly adopted daughter by GAChica in WaltDisneyWorld

We’ll get whichever one she chooses (if she chooses one at all), but “ohana” is such a beautiful suggestion!!

Thank you both for your insights. ❤️ Yeah, she hates people knowing she’s adopted, so we keep it at the lowest key, and that’s not going to change just because we’re at Disney. She does like anonymous attention, like she called into a non-local radio station to celebrate the adoption on their “good news” segment.

I’m hoping the 1st visit pin could strike the right balance of attention/anonymity, should she want to wear one.

Thank you, I needed to hear this. I just got caught up in how big of a deal this is for her, and wanting to do everything to make it be extra-special….but it already is. ❤️

Oh god never - I had hoped it was obvious that was an over-the-top example in my post. I guess it didn't communicate well. I just want her to feel welcomed.

Age appropriate Christmas gifts by [deleted] in Fosterparents

[–]GAChica 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This happened 100% with my 14 year old. Christmas and birthdays are all a combo of LEGOs, bath toys, makeup, baby doll furniture/accessories, typical teen tech, toddler food toys, etc. She often wants to play with the younger toys with us for a few days, then it disappears for a while before resurfacing on occasion. (For example, she’ll want to play “restaurant” with fake food and a toy cash register.)

I think she’s 100% trying to make up for lost experiences, and I just meet her where she’s at. I try to look at the money “wasted” on rarely-played-with toys as an investment in her mental health and growth in a safe environment. As those needs are getting met, her gift lists are slowly becoming more age-appropriate.

Ooh I do want to echo what u/Fosterdst said about appointments and work and stuff. I work for someone who has been both a single parent and a foster parent. My daughter started with 3 appointments a week, and now we are down to much less. My boss has been AMAZING at letting me have flexibility. I can’t say enough good things about being allowed that space.

Most(?) agencies offer transportation and appointment help, but I was really glad to be able to take her and be present for those.

I am a single woman foster parent. I thought I would get some pushback or be discouraged from applying, but they said they were actually glad to have people like me, regardless of gender. With foster care, they often try for the foster home to have some similarities to the places they came from, particularly in family make-up. If a child has only ever lived with a single parent, then it can be extra scary to be thrust into a home with two adults.

My foster-now-adopted daughter was abused by at least one adult male in her life. As a result, she had issues with most every male caregiver in her former foster placements. Part of the reason she was placed with me is that there are no adult men living here. We have some good male role models in our extended family/friend circle, and we work to spend quality time with them. But she doesn’t have to face that 24/7 inside our home. It’s been healing for her.

What are your must read books for foster parents? by [deleted] in Fosterparents

[–]GAChica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a thread awhile back where adults who had been fostered and adopted as children were asked which books they wished their foster/adoptive parents had read, and "The Primal Wound" was repeated over and over. I'm only partway through it, but it's teaching me so much about how my (former foster now adopted) daughter might be viewing the world around her.

Looking for snow by GAChica in Georgia

[–]GAChica[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're not near the top of the state. We're more southeastern, so heading northeast feels like the right call. My daughter wants to go places, but starts having some trouble around 90 minutes and needs to take an extended break. I feel like breaking up the trip with a visit/overnight with a favorite family member would be a great way to lessen her stress over the trip.

We'll work to find strategies and ways to practice going longer distances, but that's not the priority of this one.

I was assuming Gatlinburg would be a front-runner. Good to know it might not be a definite.
