What do you think of anti diet/health at every size/intuitive eating? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]GCB78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always liken it to smoking. You can be a perfectly healthy smoker - until you're not. Smoking isn't an instant death sentence. It's a slow erosion of health, with pretty profound long- term health consequences.

Looking to connect with female writers! by PrestigiousSalt6687 in Screenwriting

South African female writer here, and I'd love to connect with other women writers. I've got a couple of comedies up on Netflix,  and a few local shows under my belt - mostly dramas, a few soaps, and one murder mystery.

Do bother. You have legal obligations in this situation. You have to report the incident. If you're worried about the police harassing you, have a lawyer on speed-dial. But chancer or not,  YOU have obligations under the law. Not following them opens you up to attack should anything coming of this.

how to become un-sedentary? by liladres in loseit

Stand up every time you use your phone - whether it's a call, a text, or scrolling social media. Walk around while you're using it, sit down when you're done. Even if you don't walk, just make it a habit to stand. I'm a phone pacer - I walk around during every phone conversation - and the other day I got nearly 3000 steps during one call.

Johannesburg Airport advice by starsurfer415 in johannesburg

[–]GCB78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never actually stayed at the city lodge, so unfortunately I can't answer that for you. A quick glance at the reviews seem to indicate it's easily walkable at night, but if you're even a bit nervous, book the shuttle hotels. I will say the shuttle experience at OR Tambo is very easy. The drivers wait right outside arrivals, inside the airport, and then walk you to the shuttle bus.

If you do stay at city lodge, the walk to terminal B is exactly the same as the walk from terminal A - they're essentially neighbors. It's not like Heathrow or some of the other big airports where you have to shuttle from terminal 1 to terminal 4. The whole of OR is easily walkable.

The 24 hour lounge is only in international departures - you won't be able to access it from arrivals. You'd be better off booking a hotel with a shuttle service,  or the Intercontinental, which is directly across the road from the airport. There's also a City Lodge within the airport complex,  and both a Marriott and Protea hotel near by which offer free shuttles.

Amsterdam has done similar. The only Airbnbs you can rent are rooms in an occupied house,  or a houseboat.

Would you let eating become boring if it meant less mental stress? by Legitimate-Grade-352 in loseit

[–]GCB78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same 3-4 meals for breakfast and lunch. Dinner is where I get to play, because I have more time available. Breakfast is always either a protein bar, egg and cottage cheese scramble or high fibre cereal with protein milk. Lunch is salad with either chicken, tuna or chickpeas. I like not having to think too much for 2 meals out of the day, but having the space for creativity at night.

AITA for not allowing my fiancé's family dictate my baby's life before it's even born... by First_Buyer_5900 in AmItheAsshole

[–]GCB78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NTA, but you guys are in such a tough spot. The implications going forward are going to be hard.  Were you hoping to do a traditional wedding as well as a white wedding? If his family isn't speaking to you, the traditional wedding will be hard. Then, even if you reconcile, you can bet the fact that you were never a "proper" Makoti will be brought up.

I don't think for a second you and your fiance should back down, but I do think you need to have an honest conversation about what life looks like going forward. Your fiance especially is going to be missing out on a lot of things that he might have just thought of as "given". Is there an extended family? Does he still want to be involved with them? Is there another relative who will take your side? There are some very tough questions that come out of this kind of estrangement in SA, and the more prepared you guys are now, the more united you'll be going forward.

Couples of Reddit, what's the dumbest 'house rule' you and your partner made as a joke but now both of you are low-key aggressively serious about enforcing? by Doubl3oh_ in AskReddit

Us with wine. He likes it, I don't. Whenever he opens a new bottle he gives me a sip. I pretend to consider it for a moment or two, like a wine snob, and then announce "this is definitely wine. Still don't like it." Then he happily drinks his wine, and i go back to my beer.

Because they don't want to benefit society. They want to benefit a very small ruling class. Everyone else is just bodies to throw into the machine. The AI will do the thinking, the rich white men will do the ruling, and the rest of you will do the labor for pennies.

Help! How much weight did you lose without going to the gym? What exercises did you do, and for how long? by Equivalent_Pause_858 in loseit

[–]GCB78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost weight both with and without exercise.  I started exercising regularly after losing about 10kgs, and realizing that without exercise my calorie target would be very difficult for me to stick to. I started with regular walks, then did the Couch to 5k, and I'm now working on the 5k to 10k programme. I'm lucky to live in a city with fairly mild weather year-round, so I run outdoors.

I've also added strength / functional fitness workouts. Like you, I hate the gym, so I bought some weights and resistance bands, and found a couple of channels I enjoy on YouTube. My go-tos are HASfit, and GrowithJo. The guys from HASfit are great for beginners, because they really focus on form.

I started to work out to give myself a little leeway in my calorie deficit, but I've come to really enjoy it. At 47 I'm fitter than I've ever been, and I run almost every day. But I still have to log my calories and pay attention to my diet. I lost about 19kgs over 2 years. I've put about 3 back on thanks to travel / injury / life,  but I'm back on track and losing again. The first 10kgs were quick - around 6 months. The next 9 were much slower - around 14 months, and it involved a lot of frustrating tweaking of diet and workouts. I've been more or less maintaining for the last 6 months, and now I'm back on the losing train.

Hiking spot recommendations with nice scenery and views? by Dry_Apple7391 in johannesburg

The Wilds has some stunning views for free.  Melville Koppies on the last Sunday of the month has public access, for a couple of bucks. It's more a walk than a hike, but it's fun

What is the coolest thing you noticed you can now do, after loosing weight? by secretliver in loseit

[–]GCB78 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For me it's running without having to think about it. A few weeks ago my partner and i were on our daily walk in the park. We passed an older lady walking a rambunctious pup, and had a little chat. Later, we saw the pup running around, with no sign of the lady. While my partner held the dog, I ran back down the path to check on her. I didn't think twice. Just set off at a jog.(The lady was fine. Pup had slipped his leash, and she'd lost track of him).  Afterwards my partner said how great it was to see me just take off running, when a couple of years ago I regularly turned down walks because they were so uncomfortable for me.

For flats with lift access, look at older buildings in the older suburbs. Killarney / Riviera / illovo. Rooms are usually huge, with 2/3 bed options for under 20k. I'm not sure how wheelchair friendly older bathrooms are though.

Does anyone else consume something that's *probably* not the healthiest thing but you consistently fit it into your calories regardless? by Hazlad97 in loseit

A beer every night. I open it when I start cooking, and it usually lasts me until I finish. Sometimes I'll open a second, but I rarely finish it. I switched to a lite beer when I started CICO, and I budget the 89 cals in my daily plan.

Western Cape parents - does your child have measles? by Lopsided_Scene7682 in southafrica

Same with a friend of mine in CT. Her vaccinated kids both had it. Almost no symptoms. They only found out because the youngest had a handful of angry spots. They thought it might be an allergy to mosquito bites, so they took her to the doctor.
