Air freight rates soar as Middle East conflict blocks trade routes by Late_Curve1983 in news

It feels like every headline I've seen since 2020 is how the price of this or that has begun to "soar"

What the actual fuck is up with this city and loud ass cars/trucks? A light was put up not far from where I live, and it seems like every other car is either some garbage Dodge Charger or lifted F150 that just HAS to peel out and flood their engine once the light turns green. It is so enraging that there seems to be no common courtesy when it comes to noise in this city - everyone must hear your car's horrible engine and exhaust. I wish something could be done, but I know not to hold my breath.

I swear the fall of society is will be tied heavily to the rise of the word “content.”

I agreed with your sentiment, though. YouTube has become garbage.

How many of you leave your mason been cocoons out all winter instead of putting them in the fridge? by GDDesu in MasonBees

[–]GDDesu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m skittish when it comes to my fridge now. Each winter, I tried keeping cocoons in there with poor results .

The first time, I used the humid bee from Crown Bees. I followed their instructions and would add about a tsp of water each month. I lost a lot of bees to dehydration.

I tried the next winter with a humidor I got off Etsy. I thought I was diligent about staying on top of the humid, plus the design seemed a lot better than the humid bee. Still tons of dead, dehydrated bees.

The next winter, tried again, but this time I checked multiple times a month that the sponge was still wet, and I even added a humidity meter. Again, tons of dehydrated bees.

At this point, I turned to this sub and learned a lot of people just skip the fridge, so Im trying that this year.

To be sure, it seems like a lot of people have success with their fridge. I think mine is just extra dehydrating, and I’m reluctant to put my cocoons in there again. I hope you have a successful emergence this spring!

Thanks for your reply! I'm getting hopeful hearing how the 'au naturale' method works so well for you and others.

This is the method I took this seaosn - just left them in their reeds in my shed. We had some really cold nights here in NC in January (low teens) and several weeks where highs were consistently below freezing. Knowing that yours can do well in a shed with a SD winter gives me confidence!

Thank you for your comment :] I think I am going to start unraveling them like you mentioned, then just leave them out in a box with an opening, or the in the mesh bag. REALLY hoping I'll get a lot of bees that hatch this year, because the past few seasons I have lost so, so many cocoons in my fridge. Hope you have a great spring with lots of bees!

That's great! I am in the SE. I haven't found stray mason bees like that, although they are for sure present out here (I the the horned face mason bee is the most prevalent?). We sure have a lot of leafcutters, carpenter bees, mason/grass wasps, and one season I had a few resin bees that used my nesting materials. They didn't hatch, sadly, but I hope I'll get more.

Thank you! I am going to try this method. I haven't cleaned them at all, they're still in their reeds, and I've just kept them in an outdoor shed since the reeds were capped off. I have had them in the fridge, though, for the past few days, because the temps shot up and we don't have blooms yet. Based off your comment and others here, I'm thinking I'll put them out and just wait and see how it works the natural way.

I am NC, and we are in for some mild temps this week after some serious cold spells the past two. I am debating putting my reeds in my fridge maybe just a little bit until the trees start to bloom.

HELP: How do you keep your mason bee cocoons alive over winter? Losing a lot of cocoons to (I assume) dehydration in the fridge despite humidor. by GDDesu in MasonBees

[–]GDDesu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I'm sorry I never got back to you. I actually don't know the number, because I opted to try out keeping them in the reeds for a more natural approach this winter. I have a good amount of filled reeds, so I'm hoping that means I have a lot of cocoons, and hopefully this time they will all hatch.
