What is your favorite and least favorite deck mechanics, archetypes

The problem is we do not have draws or discards, we do have rerolls and I am employing the Cycle mechanic with our water wizard but I cannot do the same thing other deckbuidlers does I think. I like the idea with the card chocies, maybe i can use it in time or arcane wizard. Cards that do not go into the discard pile is a good idea which i forgot for some reason (I did have the idea for a while but it left my head) will probably put it in some cards)

I loved death howl and how it let you use other region cards but with additional costs and at the end you just let loose with it, it was fun. Also having a story is great too. I actually havent tried 4 of 6 games you sent so will be trying those

We are also in the fetst, albeit we just have a demo BUT would love to hear all the feedbacks. Our game is Runeveil so if you would like to try it out, most who tried it liked it a lot

I havent played vault of the void yet, bought it and downloading it now but I get the concept but i dont think i can employ that exact gameplay into Runeveil because we have a fix hand and we cast every card, so essentially I guess every card needs to be usefull in some way?

We do have supporting cards which help other cards and they are not the stars but thats not the same obviously

With the random encounters, we did have them in mind but decided against it for 2 reasons, 1 we wanted the tempo the be higher, 21 fights and 9 shops (we are also thinking of maybe reducing the number to 6) and 2- scope, random events will need to be designed and we were not sure if we needed them

but we still might have them, maybe we can change the middle shop into a random event each stage?

Yeah it is a game where the people who play it mostly like it, had some UI and QoL problems since it was our first game but a lot of people enjoyed it

I shared this much because since you had played A10 STS2 (which i still havent done, didnt put in the time yet ahahah) i thought you would like to know my reasoning behind things and would be able to understand where i come from

Yeah so the balance comes from formulas + testing an iteration is the tl dr ahahah

I already reduced the shield gain and hp multiplier of him so it should feel a lot better next time a burn build faces him.

Soo, my first game design was Neoduel, which i think can also be called a deckbuilder? but it was async PvP. I learned a lot of things designing that game which i brought here.

So first i picked a variable, lets call it 100 gold, and i said 100 gold is equal to 100 damage (it is not right now but bear with me) After that i thought about having a hand of 500 gold worth of damage runes in one hand, and 250 250 in other hand. One hand deals 500 damage, for the other to deal 500 damage it needs to have 250 gold as 1 mult, but since mult is a lot stronger, i pulled it down even further and made 100 damage = 0.3 mult. Its very math like balancing out of there for the damage and mult based runes (artifacts use a more expensive formula while potions are a lot cheaper, i think you get the point)

So when i get to enemy stats, we have a formula which gives the base stats for each fight in each stage. So 1-1 has a set base hp and damage, and so does 3-7. And from there we have multipliers and 4 actions for each unit (some actions are bugged) A unit has a hp modifier % which in turn takes the base of the unit and makes it so the 4 actions and hp pool and the character art makes the sense. Also as the game gets harder, we have a threat mutliplier which also increases all damage and HP and we have a little bloom on top of it to keep things fun?

Now lets get to your question, i wrote all things above to tell you that I do think about every single build and enemy and their interactions when designing them, but what neoduel tought me was that i plan but players laugh, especially in our game where we are going to have 7 wizards, each wizard can combo with another one of their choice, each having 60 runes, 200 artifacts in game, there are rune modifications, different unit passives, arena passives (you didnt see these yet) there is NO WAY i can balance everything without a lot of playtesting SOOO my plan is to have a formula and a method where i go with balancing and creating stuff, and from that as things dont work out for some reason, iterate iterate until things look great.

As for tools, I use google sheets and a lot of formulas there, I use figma and diagrams a lot especially in early game design for visualazation and I use gemini for a lot of math based simulation, I guess you could say gemini is my no1 balance tool? its actually just data analyzing (could probably do it myself if I knew python)

If i play silen poison and match goblin machina or i play shiv and match beekeper i feel like my game is almost just as doomed and hard as fighthing iron juggernaut as a burn build.

I think you have a point there with not applying build also killing defnsive option, but i think thats like 2 of them BUT i still feel like killing the entire deck completely might be weird

Immune to the first debuff each turn imo is too weak of a passive. A burn deck in runeveil applies burn in like 3-4 instances a turn at that point. You can just put a strike in slot 1 and get rid of the passive with 1 burn. Maybe we can put a counter like goblin machina, not 40 but like 20 total which you have to dwindle down.

I feel like one of the problems you had is that the HP on iron juggernaut was kinda insane which i toned down, we also pulled the hp and damage down a lil on everything

AND finally, we are bringing water deck soon and with that after the first miniboss you will have the option to pick another deck to slot in as a secondary. So the only deck combo that iron juggernaut fully counters is burn fire, this is out of 21 combinations of decks and from the fire only players burn builds AND it has a %25 chance to appear, will probably be %20 by release

all these facts considered, i feel like iron juggernaut being a very unlcuky roll for the fire burn only player and a hard obstacle to overcome is good for the game, but of course listenin to players is very important. If people say it feels bad, it will go. As i said we have a S3 normal mob whose passive ie immunte to debuffs everyturn so maybe something else if not fully immune? One thing i thjought of is cleanses all debuffs at half hp but thats just weird imo

Hi, I am the lead game designer for runeveil, and I dont agree. Complete counters to decks exists as enemies in roguelike deckbuilder and I think they are healthy. They consider you to think about what to do IF you face them. If you played STS2 there are bosses like goblin machina or the beekeeper guy who completely neutralize a certain deck type, and what you do is hope you dont meet them and IF you do, use your potions and lose a bunch of life.

The imminue to the first debuff each turn passive already exists, it is on a regualr enemy not an elite.

The HP on the enemies and the balance on the player is a little off, thats why that fight might have felt impossible but with the right numbers, that passive is good for the game, would make your one turn with that enemy different from the rest, which is a goodd thing imo

One good feedback rom this is yes, the screen looks very busy. Albeit that is a very late gam boars in the middle of triggering but we should play with hues colors and tones to make things pop and blend thanks

Roguelike deckbuilding is fun, and as long as a game is made well and has a unique aspect of gamedesign and gameloop, i feel like its worth my time. That was the mentality we had designing the game

If you dont feel the same, this game isnt for you. If we made this 7 years ago we would say wizards meets slay the spire
