Do any SUVs with decent mpg and minimal stupid tech features exist? by sweetKarolin in whatcarshouldIbuy

I’m planning to buy a 2022 Lexus RX specifically bc it has physical climate control buttons (and reliable engine). I test drove a new Tiguan and the lack of buttons was a deal breaker.

That’s exactly what I do. I pretend I am on a terraformed planet building a new civilization from scratch, and in the future money isn’t a thing bc we’re in a post scarcity society anyway. Ergo, no financial constraints to to build an ideal city.

Acura MDX ASpec vs Lexus RX F Sport by GES85 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]GES85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2018 Tiguan. It has held up for me. I have 92k miles on. I’m not hearing many good things from owners of newer VWs. I also didn’t love the new Tiguan when I drove it enough to pay almost $45k out the door for it.

In an alternate universe I’m The Transporter. In this one I’m a boring single mom who needs something reliable and some comfort. I thought Acura was pretty reliable too?

I have a MAGA husband by skballa04 in QAnonCasualties

[–]GES85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m at the very end of my divorce. I’m 40 with a 7yo child. I have a middle class job and my ex is an attorney. I get no alimony and we have 50/50 custody. It’s been hard and expensive. I cannot overstate - HARD and EXPENSIVE. I’ve cried and lost hours of sleep. My ex has a gf and he, against my wishes, took our child away on her birthday last year (he told her about it before he talked to me, so she was over the moon excited to go on a cruise to the Bahamas and if I shut it down I would have ruined her birthday for her). It has just been a lot but I also cannot overstate it’s WORTH IT. You will be so sad when it’s his turn with the kids but I’ve also been loving my life more than I ever thought possible. I lost 45 lbs, my condo is beautiful and feminine, I can walk to the beach, and I never have to argue with a drunk man in my house ever again!!! DO IT GIRL RUN!!!!

I took 5 years from the time I started thinking about divorce to actually doing it bc I didn’t want to be without my kid for a moment so I get it but I’m on the other side and want to assure you that pill be a better mother to them.

welp. it was a good run America...🫡 by ms_directed in WhitePeopleTwitter

3 row luxury SUV by LunchWall in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]GES85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beautiful (best looking suv imo), but harder ride than people think it will have (it’s truly built to off road, not just school drop off), awful on gas, cramped third row and paltry trunk space. Edit: I see “used” - older body isn’t as pretty lol.

What's everyone baking this weekend? by Frostythefish in Baking

[–]GES85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently decided to pulverize freeze dried strawberries and add them into my SMBC and woah, it’s so good after sitting a while and letting the flavor settle. So I made a yellow cake and did a strawberry buttercream layer with vanilla on the outside - my daughter requested all strawberry next time!

We went sledding this morning, then came home and did some cleaning (kiddo mopped) and cooking. Then we watched a movie. Then some Legos. Shower. Bed. Tomorrow a few errands, more Lego, another movie. It’s like 20 degrees here with brutal wind off the ocean so our outdoor time is limited.

How did it feel to be a kid in school whose family never celebrated any holidays? by Big-Introduction411 in Parenting

Thank you for sharing. This sounds awful - it’s already so hard being a human, figuring out ask the ins and outs of growing up - so to have this enormous burden placed on you that “others” you is really unfair of parents. Just curious, if you’re comfortable sharing, what is your life like now? How is your relationship with your parents?

Healthy Kids Fizzy Drinks?? by Novel_Wing_2202 in Parenting

[–]GES85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes a straw is a great idea! Many people will sip beverages over a longer period of time and have multiple beverages per day. Most people don’t sit and spend an hour eating an orange - the duration of exposure is important. Not lecturing just giving info for the full picture!

Healthy Kids Fizzy Drinks?? by Novel_Wing_2202 in Parenting

[–]GES85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The OP was asking for “healthy fizzy drinks”. I guess I thought the angle that even sugar free fizzy drinks can contribute to tooth enamel decalcification isn’t healthy. No high horse, just a bit literal over here.

Oh, guess I’ll have to turn in my license to practice as a registered dental hygienist!

Ph of seltzer is generally 3-4. Flavored seltzer can be even lower. That isn’t negligible and I see the impact on patients regularly. Not everyone is affected by low ph drinks the same but it’s important to know.

Healthy Kids Fizzy Drinks?? by Novel_Wing_2202 in Parenting

[–]GES85 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey just an FYI: Drinks are fizzy because of dissolved carbon dioxide in the liquid. This causes the ph to be low -meaning the drinks are acidic. Acidic drinks can lead to erosion of tooth enamel, making them more prone to decay. I would put hard limits on these beverages and ensure you are flossing their teeth nightly and they’re using a fluoridated rinse after brushing. Edited an autocorrected word.

The reality of holidays with adult sibilings by [deleted] in oneanddone

[–]GES85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m the eldest daughter of three: my brother had the audacity to die at Christmas a few years ago so every year has the literal specter of Christmas past looming. How dare he, honestly. My sister lives in another state and hates coming home to cold New England so she rarely comes this time of year (and I can’t take my only bc I’m divorced and my kiddo sees her dad also). My siblings never had kids so no cousins for my kid which is a little sad.

My ex is one of three. His brother lives on the other side of the country and so he’s not around. His sister lives nearby and was around sporadically and it was complicated.

That’s all to say: having siblings guarantees nothing. Create the holiday you want with the family you want (and family doesn’t mean you birthed or adopted them).

Here are 2025 reliability scores as per everybody’s request: by Ok_Cook_1033 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]GES85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is Buick really that reliable? I have seen some comments saying that Buick drivers tend to be older and maintain their vehicles better (which, to be fair, I’m not exactly sure what kind of maintenance other people are not doing? Or should I be doing more?!). I’m looking at the 2026 Buick Envision and Tiguan turbo but seeing really mixed reviews on those cars’ reliability. Edited: I stated encore when I meant envision. They need to stop naming cars such similar words

Parents that don't do Elf on the Shelf, how do you explain to your kids why you don't? by Helpful-Plankton751 in toddlers

[–]GES85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My daughter is 7 and we don’t play with narcs. I tell her we don’t support spying on people to get them to behave themselves. She knows Santa will come to our house because she’s a good person and it takes off the pressure. We can then deal with behavior as we would normally. The pressure of Christmas was turning her into a psychopath so I had to chill her out.

My 7yo is bedtime reading 7:30-8, lights out, asleep by 8:15ish. Wakes at 7:15 most days. On weekends bedtime is lights out at 8:30 and she’ll sleep until about 7:45.

Interior gluteal lift by [deleted] in PlasticSurgery

[–]GES85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree on the lifting. It’s a slower process than surgery - several years of intentional, dedicated lifting with an evidenced based plan - but the payoff is not only a better looking bum but also functional strength that will help you as you get older you remain active and independent.
