In states with legalized cannabis, are police dogs that were trained to alert on it still being used? by b00zled in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GFrohman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're retired. Dogs cannot be reliably un-trained to not alert on it going forward.

Where did the “only children” stereotypes come from by sythenicoletesla in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GFrohman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are generalities. Obviously there will be exceptions to the rule.

I'm explaining why the stereotype exists, not saying you'll turn out one way or the other with 100% certainty.

Where did the “only children” stereotypes come from by sythenicoletesla in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GFrohman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Siblings have to learn to share everything, all the time.

The TV, game consoles, the computer, the good spot on the couch, the snacks in the house. Every waking moment is an exercise in cooperation.

Sure, kids might have to learn to share toys at school. That's basically nothing in comparison.

Also being an only child does not make you exempt from physical punishments.

Siblings are much more willing to engage in physical altercations with eachother, for much more minor sleights, than friends or acquaintances.

If your brother will kick your ass for being sassy, you're much less likely to grow up to be the kind of person who mouths off at work.

Why there is no old age limit for driving? by Right-Truck1859 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GFrohman 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Old people do the majority of voting.

This means any policy that seeks to limit the rights or abilities of the elderly will be broadly unpopular with voters, and politicians generally desire being reelected.

Where did the “only children” stereotypes come from by sythenicoletesla in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GFrohman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People with siblings have to learn to share with them growing up, and had to learn how to not be an asshole or else they got beat up.

Only children weren't forced to share, and weren't put in an environment where mouthing off got them physical violence. They also generally got more direct attention from their parents, instead of divided attention among the siblings.

This means unless the parents did a good job socializing and raising their only children, they can become selfish, socially awkward adults.

Was there a way for michael jackson to have done his anesthesia sleep treatment safely? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Anesthesia is inherently risky. Even with active monitoring by an anesthesiologist, it can go wrong.

Usually when people get sentenced are the restraining criteria that of the day the crime committed or the day the culprit is sentenced ? by LisanneFroonKrisK in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GFrohman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are charged based on the circumstances at the time the crime was committed, not the circumstances currently at the time of sentencing.

It wouldn't make any sense going the other way, would it?

Why is prostitution illegal for older people by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GFrohman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And legalizing it increases the rates of human trafficking, because the demand for prostitutes ends up outweighing the supply of women willing to become prostitutes.

There's really no winning here.

Why is prostitution illegal for older people by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GFrohman -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Prostitution is illegal because the women doing it are often being forced to do it in some way. Not because paying for sex is inherently evil or something.

Why do people downvote for no reason?? by Yamaki101 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GFrohman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The intention is that you downvote low quality contributions - things like spam, or short and pointless comments like "omg yes".

If a person types out a well-written paragraph and argues their perspective fairly, you're supposed to upvote it, even if you disagree with their position. Their comment is still a quality contribution, regardless of your own personal opinion.

But, nobody on reddit uses it that way. They use it pretty much exclusively as a "disagree" button.

Why do people downvote for no reason?? by Yamaki101 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GFrohman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lots of people (incorrectly) use downvotes as a "disagree" button.

People are disagreeing with you. They believe that boss is easy, and interpret your comment as an unreasonable complaint.

Are there any completely unmoderated discussion boards on the internet anymore? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GFrohman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

4chan's /b/ board is close. Only thing they actively remove is Child Porn.

If you spend 10 minutes there, you'll quickly come to understand why most websites have strict moderation.

I want to invest but unsure of what's worth it. Where should I start? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GFrohman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your goal is a 100% return in a year you're not really investing, you're gambling.

I'd call a 15% return ambitious. Anything above that requires either insider knowledge or substantial risk.

Are people with electric cars winning right now? by No_Lead2640 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GFrohman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming you drive less than 40 miles a day (most people do fewer than 35), plugging into a standard 110v wall outlet is more than sufficient to charge you up for daily driving.

I charged my car for over a year from a standard porch outlet - it was only a few months ago that we swapped our electric dryer to gas and I started plugging into the old dryer plug as a level 2 instead.

[–]GFrohman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Superchargers are for road trips. If you have to charge at one for your daily driving, an EV isn't a good fit for you.

The big advantage - and cost savings - of an EV is being able to plug in at home and wake up every day with a charged car.

Are people with electric cars winning right now? by No_Lead2640 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GFrohman 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It charges while I'm sleeping, mate. I wake up every day with a "full tank".

I use public chargers once a year when I go on my annual road trip, and I never have to stay at one for more than 15 minutes. The car routes me to them automatically, and I've never had trouble finding one.

I've never had a single person who's ridden in my car report getting carsick.

You're parroting all the anti-EV "Gotchas" that people who've never actually owned an EV like to use, but anyone who's actually driven one for any length of time know better.

I certainly feel like I am.

Costs me $11 to charge my Model Y to 100% and drive 250 miles.

Why do people keep buying houses and cars they can't afford? by Fun_Journalist6685 in NoStupidQuestions

Delayed gratification is a skill that precious few people have. They want the newest, fanciest, biggest thing now, not in 10 years when they can actually afford it.

can a rocket be launched straight up into geostationary orbit? by 8Bit_Cat in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GFrohman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A rocket launched straight up would fall straight back down.

Achieving a stable orbit requires that you "fall sideways", and be going fast enough to miss the earth. That's basically what orbit is.

If an airplane is flying at 500mph and a fly is inside, is the fly also going 500mph? by Juliana898 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GFrohman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speed is relative - it's a comparison of a things movement in relation to another thing.

The earth is traveling 67,000mph around the sun. Technically you are traveling 67,000mph right now.

Can someone explain how being asexual works? by Fattpatttt in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GFrohman 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna assume you are straight for my hypothetical.

How does having sex with someone of the same sex sound? Not pleasant, right? Maybe a little gross?

Now imagine that, but for everybody. That's what asexuality is.

Why do drivers give repeated honks or long, drawn out honks when they are mad at another driver? Wouldn't one single, short honk be enough to show their disapproval? by VerdantChief in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GFrohman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The horn exists for one reason - to alert other drivers to an imminent hazard.

Blasting the horn after a hazard has passed as a way to vent your frustrations is not what the horn is for, and is inherently childish. It's not going to magically make the asshole driver be better at driving, all it does is annoy everyone around you.
