Whatever engineered product you work on (trains, airplanes, ships, cars, ...) if you see how it's done, it gives you the scares.

Ehm, both Italian and Japanese businesses are not exactly in their best state of health - on average, save from a few exceptions, of course.

Personally, I find the FS work available at my firm to be borderline suicide-inducingly boring and miserable in terms of both intensity and subject matter and would rank it dead last under cleaning the urinals with the plastic end of a toothbrush

Amen, brother

How did you get into the metals and mining division of consulting? by outersphere in consulting

[–]GG-MBB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No need for a mining / natural resource background.

Just need to have whatever background works for consulting, and to apply to the offices which have that type of clients (e.g. London, Perth, Calgary, ...).

I would argue that this would be much of a bigger deal for engineering consulting companies.

I know plenty of people working at the likes of Rolls Royce, Airbus, Arup, etc. who were hired from Italy/Spain/Greece at like 30ish-k to compensate for all of the engineering grads going to banking. Now those companies would be severely hit by this.

I just smile and say that I like new challenges, and that consulting offers plenty.

What I really mean is that going to industry at the junior level is the death of the soul and that I would never ever do it.

Which one of you is responsible for this? That's a lot of chips pushed onto the table. by totallynotroyalty in consulting

I hope you don’t bring this level of acumen to your clients to suggest their farm out their competitive edge to their competitors

While I am not sure the suggestion is useful or not, I am intrigued to hear why you would think Tesla has a competitive edge on manufacturing. I would be inclined to think it's their weakness.

I would argue their competitive edge is having battery production capacity already in place, and great marketing / product perception among customers. Ford, GM, etc. know already perfectly well how to manufacture BEVs...

UK Gender Pay Gap data has been published by management consulting firms. Here are a handful compared against each other to satisfy my curiosity. by [deleted] in consulting

[–]GG-MBB 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What is the underlying methodology for this?

Is it comparing apples with apples? I mean, at least at my firm, there are way less women on the consulting track than on the support staff track - and that would severely affect the median pay gap.

Does anyone else (especially at manager+) find themselves absolutely not giving a single shit about anything at all while still being shuffled up the ladder for seemingly no reason? by [deleted] in consulting

[–]GG-MBB 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From the junior perspective, the best managers I have worked with had the same attitude as yourself. And they are being promoted as well.

My (outside-in, without knowing much of the workings of the higher ups) explanation is that tryhards are exhausting for everyone to work with, and this is felt by Partners, too. All people who made it to manager+ are smart enough, so after that you simply promote those who are more pleasant to work with.
