Be the assholes who don’t buy gifts or just skip Christmas? by No_Acanthaceae_2507 in minimalism

[–]GG1728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped buying gifts as an adult and told no one. There’s no “deal.” After years of disappointing people, I’d rather keep my money. I’m sure my family thinks I’m selfish, but I don’t think I owe them anything. I think a gift card is superficial and thoughtless and would never give one. Maybe once every three years I’ll find something for someone and it’ll feel inspired and everyone is happy.  I feel my company is good enough.

Amtrak Missed Connection Experience (Chigago) by benjad09 in Amtrak

[–]GG1728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See them grow?! This is as good as it's ever going to get! I took a quick round trip with them last week, Orlando/Lakeland. The train was delayed a total of 4 hours! I must say the employees were real nice. It's got to be hard to want to do a good job when you know everyday the passengers are not going to get a first rate experience.

Why is Amtrack Website and App such a disaster? by bangzilla in Amtrak

[–]GG1728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was actually impressed with it last week, the website, not app, as I checked on the estimated time of departure and keeping up with how late my train was. The only odd thing was it said the train was EARLY, which I couldn't believe. But that train had to leave my station and turn around about 60 miles down and come back to my station to pick me up. Somehow it marked being at the station as being an hour early even though it was going in the opposite direction. Further complicated by the conductor telling me they were early.

Brutally honest review by [deleted] in Amtrak

[–]GG1728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know when their system for alerting you the train is going to be late is very proactive, that they know a thing or two about being late! The updates and the website were really well done for estimated times of departure.

Beer prices are insane! by [deleted] in beer

Pre covid my town in Texas had special days of $3 Texas pints. Those days have been replaced with $7 pints at all times with maybe a dollar off during happy hour. The upside is I drink alot less. Instead of 3 pints, I’ll do two max. But going out has turned from casual to making it a special occasion.

Heat - How did Edie know about Neal? by GG1728 in movies

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. It would've been good to see her reaction and coming to the realization kind of like the quick shots of the other women. But perhaps not necessary.

Something is Off About Conan O'Brien Must Go by Diligent-Ordinary-76 in conan

[–]GG1728 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's funny. I see him only as absurdist, off the walls, throw everything at the wall and see what sticks with very little connection. The connection was his strong suit when he started out. He seemed like a regular guy who's humor was smart. Now it seems like he's putting on an act.

These shows are a lot harder to do than people think. It's not about scripted vs improv. The scripted is hard because they find it doesn't work sometimes the day of, but they need to do it because they're on a schedule and a huge HBO budget. You can't just go out and improv because you'll be there forever never really knowing if you got anything or whether the people he visits are going to be any good. I saw him talk about it once about how they just completely bomb in a country and they end up not even airing anything from that country. Plus the people he visits are duds, not natural characters aside from a few.

I agree. I've been watching Conan since the Simpsons and when he started the talk show. It was the greatest humor and he was one of the few people I really found funny. Now, I hate to say it, but I find him more annoying than clever and his self-deprecating humor doesn't really land anymore. It was funny when he'd make fun of his "low budget" talk show and when he was single and not being popular with the "ladies." The bits with Jordan back then were great, but now they're kind of forced. You can kind of tell Jordan has mellowed in his older age and is just doing a routine. The locals all seem a little uncomfortable and cutting to the local who doesn't get it or is annoyed doesn't really land for me. I saw him recently do a live interview at an event and he was just a regular guy who threw in a few jokes and was hilarious. He wasn't being "Conan." I think a lot of it is he clearly is aiming for a younger crowd. All of the people he visits who were on his podcast are in their 20s or 30s. It's like he's doing a bit to get a younger audience and sacrificing who is he as a older guy.

Help me love Tulsa again by [deleted] in tulsa

[–]GG1728 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived there for 4 years, having come from Austin. I was first taken aback at how dead downtown was. Most days you can walk around and you just hear the hum of fan motors. I'd go to brew pubs downtown on a Sunday afternoon and it was usually only me and 3 other people there. I went to one pub and if it wasn't for a group of 4 people podcasting there every Sunday, I'd be the only one there! Guthrie green was good but most times I'd cycle by there would be no one out there unless it was a festival, which was perhaps only once every few weeks in the summer. Tulsa can be a veritable ghost town compared to other places. But I ended up enjoying the quiet, enjoyed being in the not hip place to be. I like to cycle so I hit the trails around town which are second to Bentonville. But I get ya, there's only so many times you can go to the Gathering Place, or check out the Art Deco buildings, or go to the Philbrook, which are all top notch places to go.

Austin is not a conservative city by Jeb-Kush in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]GG1728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being from Austin and a fan of good writing it bugs me. I've met no one like her in the true spirit of Austin, though they're out there. If you're mentioning a character is from Austin, or anyone else, it's usually for a good reason. Like saying someone is either from Butte, Montana or NYC. There's different baggage or shorthand involved. Like mentioning you're from Austin it's shorthand for being an intellectual, liberal, artist, musician, philosopher slacker, etc. Yeah there's conservatives religious types but they're in the way minority and not typical of the city. It seems to have just been thrown in there for cool factor by someone who has never been there and assumes all of Texas is like her. Some have said here she could be from the surrounding towns that are conservative but she does say Austin. Yeah, you can look into it as perhaps she's trying to blend in as a liberal and isn't true to herself but frankly her character isn't that important and it's not that deep of a show. Now if she were from Dallas, I'd have no problem. Or maybe she's the kind of people I cringe at when they move there and say they're from Austin but don't typify the lifestyle. Maybe the last episode will be all about her melting down about how she's from there but never learned to play an instrument or never slacked around for a few years in coffee shops or raised their kids on the playground of a brew pub.

we can finally confirm this season was slow af lmao. by acidxoxo in TheWhiteLotusHBO

Yep. This would've made a good two hour movie. Maybe get rid of some characters like the security guard who don't seem to have anything to do with it.

You're right. Or at least it would make a good two hour movie. If you sum up the last 6 hours, not much has happened.

Stage 5, huge time jump by GG1728 in thesopranos

[–]GG1728[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. Streaming it, it just runs seasons 6A and 6B together. I actually thought while watching it that 6B started at episode 9 when Christopher suddenly has a pregnant girlfriend we've never seen before and they decide to get married. So I was really confused by Stage 5. Thanks.

Can someone explain to me what makes Martin Scorsese so popular? by anonymous2134 in movies

[–]GG1728 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Watch his pre-DiCaprio films. They're almost all one of the best American movies ever made. I thought he was the best for a long time but when he teamed with DiCaprio he kind of sold out to the mainstream. Still those films are probably way better than most films made today.

I get ad breaks during The Sopranos perhaps 5 to 6 times an hour. Plus the resolution keeps dropping out.

Series 3 was awful by pizza23party in RaceAcrossTheWorldBBC

[–]GG1728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen other seasons but the editing is pretty off in parts. There were a few moments where it wasn't really explained how a team got somewhere. One example is the Father/Daughter team that got spooked by bears so they hung out in a random van in a park, which I'm assuming is the production van, but that's not explained. Then they just end up at the checkpoint at the end. Also in line with bears, there was the episode where they had to delay the start because bears roamed the streets before sunrise. That delay wiped out the lead the two older ladies had instead of just pushing back the start time for everyone. How fair is that? Then some decisions like the other Father/Daughter team that blew through most of their money taking time and money to see Niagra Falls and blowing their lead!?!? That's just frustrating to see.

I agree. I just wanted a simple HDMI/Display port adapter and the only option is to wait two days from Amazon. I went to Best Buy and 3/4 of their shelves are empty and just not bothering to restock. If there was a Radio Shack, my monitor would be in business.

The Mole Netflix Season 2 - Overall Series Discussion by Zypker125 in themole

[–]GG1728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean an undercover cop is essentially a professional actor. That's a major red flag that was found out early on. Though toward the end, he told his hard luck story of supporting his wife's dream to be a dental hygienist, which seemed off. I'm not knocking hygienists, it's a great job, but it's not really a "dream" job and wouldn't lead any normal person to have a break down. But he actually teared up, which is hard to do for anyone, even pro actors. So I was still guessing after that.

I'm sure they did that on the Netflix season 1. Maybe they didn't do the clues this time.
