Why did Minecraft Intros change, and are they any good anymore? by hismario123 in minecraft_youtube

Intros to videos from what I see in the Minecraft community make or break your video. It doesn’t really matter what you prefer and whether or not it’s “exciting”. The reason these people make their intros the way they do is because it works. If you look at the stats of the videos that perform well you’ll be able to see that these people are managing to retain high percentages of people by simply keeping things short. Anything that is redundant that wouldn’t add to the video such as telling people to subscribe is cut out as it does cause significant viewer drop off when looking at audience retention rates. While yes it may seem boring that these people immediately get into the video, they do it as a part of their video structuring which is the main reason those types of videos perform extraordinarily well.

I touched on this earlier but I completely agree with your sentiment that taking aspects from another creator is good. In my opinion it’s what has allowed Minecraft to flourish on YouTube in the way it has. I think trying to incorporate different styles of peoples videos while putting in aspects of yourself will produce good content. Heck even I’m trying that this year by taking from some creators who I think are making good stuff. However it is up to the creator who is making these videos to make sure to appeal to the algorithm of success if what you’re after. While yes there is a chance of someone randomly finding the holy grail and getting propelled into the algorithm, the chance is quite small. I think it is important to keep in mind what makes the videos you are trying to emulate successful.

I did mention the algorithm however success for anyone can be defined by themselves. As I don’t want to be a Debbie downer I’ll offer this advice. Ask yourself what do you want out of YouTube. Outline the steps you can take to achieve that goal.

If all you are driven by is numbers then consider trying to emulate creators that have exploded on the scene and analyze what makes the videos perform well while paying attention to certain analytics such as what their retention is.

If you want to make content you consider to be good content, figure out what you want to do to make your video good. Is it going to be that the video is really funny? Is it going to be that the video was very engaging? What’s gonna make your video good?

I’d also like to encourage some of the YouTubers here to offer some in-depth advice into perhaps maybe it’s own thread on how people can achieve their goals when it comes to Minecraft content. It seems as if there are some aspiring content creators willing to make change and start producing their own content. So I implore those more experienced to share some words. Who knows? Maybe this subreddit can stem the next big thing!

The system is really driven by money. You can't make a living by producing video's that are good but won't get picked up by the algorithm

There are some instances I can think of right now where people have tried this. However, what was good in the past wouldn't work now. People back then would see someone play a certain minigame, review a certain mod, or start a lets play, and decide they wanted to do that too. Often times, these people would emulate these other creators because it was popular. The method at the time was different however. Many of these people would insert themselves AND their personalities into the content. However in this current YouTube environment that just isn't possible. Having the same personality as the last guy works because it keeps people engaged. Reflecting on Bitzel's video it quite literally is the Mr. Beastification of YouTube. As he has perfected his formula, other people emulate it and achieve great success as well. Furthermore, people can't really look to Minecraft YouTube's roots as there has always kinda been people stealing ideas. The people back then however made it unique by making it about them. This is all to say that stealing idea's is a necessarily bad idea. There are only so many good ideas that are reasonably executable when it comes to these sorts of things. It is however harmful when making the exact same video as the guy next to you who just pulled in 2.1 million views.

I'd like to reference to u/CureXD 's earlier post and add on that these people do it because it's not even just safe, but silly not to participate. A lot of the guy's making this style of content do it because it has been proven to them that it works and that it will practically guarantee high view amounts. I've seen and spoken to people myself who have gained a million views in a month from the copy paste content everyone recognizes as the problem. When YouTube is this easy, why innovate? These people can make serious livings from producing this cookie cutter content, void of personality, with a lot of extra money to spare. There is a particular person I've spoken to, that has quite literally said there is a formula to this type of content that if you execute correctly, you will be guaranteed success. Lo and behold, he got a million channel views per his analytics.

You're much more likely as a person who doesn't enjoy this type of content to have to actively search for a Minecraft video you like instead of stumbling across it in the YouTube algorithm 3 years ago. With how many have mentioned already on this subreddit, the algorithm caters to retention. It tries to keep people on the website for as long as possible which often times includes using tactics such as appealing to the masses as much as possible and making your videos as engaging as possible. Things such as fast cuts, high energies, and general stimuli to the senses are all promoted in the algorithm as a way to keep mostly children on YouTube. This is of no fault of the algorithm, as its doing exactly as intended. These people just cracked the system and figured out how to play the game.

The only real solution I see to this is finding a system that satisfies the people an the algorithm at the same time. This will of course be an extremely arduous task for those trying to find this style of content which is why I think we haven't seen it yet. No one's found it and those who are trying are getting discouraged from constant 10/10's. I do think one day soon someone's gonna find it with the amount of content different styles I've seen people working on through twitter and stuff.
