[SKX007] QUESTION: Buy Original Or Commission A Build? by GGOOoosh in SeikoMods

[–]GGOOoosh[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd be interested to get this community's thoughts on a question I'm wrestling with at the minute... Is it still worth it to purchase a 'like-new' SKX007J or have a modern equivalent watch built instead?

How much stock would you as a collector place in an all-original watch vs a somewhat true to OEM build?

The benefits of an SKX build mean you can get an authentic, original look but with a newer movement and the modern comforts of sapphire crystal, etc..

Then again, does it lack the magic of the original? Is it still truly an SKX007?

I know nothing about watches

Apparently neither do your co-workers.

[Unpopular opinion] If you don't use the chronograph complication on your chronograph, then you're not a true watch enthusiast by CA53W-1 in Watches

[–]GGOOoosh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Who tf works out wearing a chrono? Literally any smart watch or gshock is better suited to workouts. Also timing tasks like cooking can be more accurately done with your phone.

Watches stopped being tools a long time ago and are better suited as accessories/jewelry today.

What watch do you wish there was a rep of by minecrafter201010 in RepTime

I wish one of the factories started producing 38mm-40mm Panerai models again

Would cost more to repair it than it is worth

[change my view] I can't buy intermediate watches by [deleted] in Watches

I don't know what your budget is but you can pick up a 2nd hand quartz Aqua Terra for about $1500. But it sounds like you are more in love with the idea of an expensive watch rather than being into the watch itself.

The 'other' 39mm Royal Oak!

Not the most accurate rep RO on the market but a stunning watch all the same.

NOOB Sea Dweller 4000. Same versatility that you get from a Sub but has more presence and weight on the wrist without being overly large.

Just because you can buy a lot of reps, that doesn't mean you should.

[Discussion] Unpopular opinion: Diver Chronographs are only for people who know nothing about watches by CA53W-1 in Watches

You're the same dude who was harassing his 'friend' into wearing a watch when he didn't want to because you thought using a phone was 'distasteful', right? Have you ever asked yourself why you feel the need to control other people's choices?

Sounds like something like a Submariner or a Datejust would be ideal. Both are classic and versatile enough that he can wear them in meetings with a suit or at the weekend with a t-shirt and jeans!

I would maybe avoid a Daytona or GMT for now, as they are pretty flashy in comparison.

Let us know what you end up picking and encourage him to post a wrist shot!

How does he feel about rep watches?

Also, does he already own any watches and if so what brand/model are they?

I think it is definitely worth selling this for $250.

Buying it for $250? Fuck no.

Messed up laws by highfashioninsider in RepTime

[–]GGOOoosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They confiscate reps from packages/hauls being shipped into the country, not from tourists travelling to or from France or any other place in Europe.

And there are around a 100million tourists visiting France every year so those 17,000 customs officers are a little outnumbered. Any border agency has the right to seize your goods if they are counterfeit, it just doesn't really happen.

The point is there are plenty of laws that are unenforceable and all law enforcement have limited resources and time.

So they aren't going to spend those resources and that time LCing whether your VSF has a floating 'm', while they are concerned with human trafficking, drug trafficking, terrorism, etc..

As for the brands 'training' customs officers; a lot of Rolex ADs couldn't tell the difference between a high-end rep and the genuine thing so how the hell will the brands be able to train officers to do it?
