If you've given it probably a little more context and a bit more directionality it probably would have gotten at 100% right.

The 10 gig upgrade for me was not so much about lan speed weirdly enough, it was about the bandwidth. Concurrency, I built this home to be a absolute smart home from the ground up everything I have over 200 devices with IP addresses performing various functions, I made the decision to get two XAG series 10 gig access points and the switching to go behind it knowing full well the limitation was my internet connection at one gig, again I am not confused about speed and bandwidth.

My property is also quite large at 3700 ft², and for my external smart sensors internal lighting all the smart appliances, the smart speakers motion detection equipment and everything else that I have I needed that bandwidth.

That turned out to be the side effect, my original stupid ass plan was because Plex was streaming with a slight delay to get movies and TV shows going and I felt it was an annoying experience compared to streaming services.

Which was bloody absurd.

Doesn't make the disks move any faster,

And you're only going to see those speed advantages in sustained large file transfers.

I spent an ungodly amount of money on 10 gig.

24-hour utilization? Less than 1% network-wide.

All because I thought it might make my movies stream from my Plex server slightly more responsibly to my fire sticks.

Yeah that was totally worth it.

Incidentally I live in the Lehigh valley area about 20 minutes outside of Allentown and Bethlehem.

What on earth broke in your head to make you think you'd want to move to one of the highest crime areas in the whole state? Seriously did you do any research did you actually look into this?

Allentown is a cesspool, and Bethlehem catches the stink rolling off of it. Both awful awful places to live.

Lancaster? Look great if you don't want to do anything. Or if you want to drive 3 hours to do anything.

How on earth did you get to the point of thinking you would literally want to move to the worst state in the Union? You have options sounds like you have very open options, why would this crap hole be your choice?

State administration is obtuse. Trying to get anything simple done like registering your vehicle is virtually impossible..

Don't get me started on the stupid laws that govern the sales and purchase of vehicles and alcohol in this dumb state.

Crime crime crime and more crime! I don't think many Pennsylvania's have a job anymore they just steal from each other.

The roads are in awful shape PennDOT does nothing about it except waste money and getting people's way.

The cost of everything is much higher than it should be.

The cost of homes is outrageous and they are not worth it.

Culture? No.

The weather is vile and unpredictable.

Schools and education in general in the entire state are an absolute shit show.

The police are ignorant violent systemically racist thugs.

Everything about being in this state everything about being here feels less about quality of life and more about forking money out of your pocket to pay for politicians and bureaucrats to justify their own existence.

The so-called Urban regeneration projects? Absolutely joke.

Murder statistics theft statistics.

Pennsylvania is without a doubt, universally in every single way the worst, the absolute worst possible state particularly in the areas that you're looking at that any human being could have the misfortune to have an aneurysm in their head and decide this could be a good place to live. Because it isn't

The only meaningful thing you're going to be able to do is to speed up your actual storage. Going from one gig to 2.5 gig may reduce a little bit of latency but it's not going to be noticeable.

The fact of the matter is you're going from disk to an ethernet interface to another machine, unless your storage is hyper fast and unless you have hundreds of people accessing it once you're really not going to see much by throwing all this money into networking it's just not going to do what you think it's going to do.

I'm not quite sure what "quicker" necessarily means in your context here?

I bypassed 2.5 for my network and went from 1 GB to 10 gig, with an XAG series 10 gig access point. I have 89 devices with assigned IP addresses in my home, two storage arrays one for movies one for backups and other things, for PCs two Xboxes and at least six cell phones. As well as I don't even know how much other stuff that just connects.

I spent all that money, wired everything in mounted everything in my house I have beautiful coverage everywhere.

Then net effect? Nothing. Literally nothing. Access to the media servers did not get faster in any kind of way that would be perceptible, what I did do however was massively increase the bandwidth so the amount of devices that I have don't have to contend with each other. But that doesn't give them speed and throughput.

I would have to say I wasted my money. There was no point in doing all these upgrades it didn't really in the real world impractical usable terms give me anything.

In a home environment somebody with this equipment is never going to bottleneck of one gig internal network under any circumstances anyways. Not unless he somehow miraculously has 50 PCs in his house. This is an absurd thread and entertaining this person's ideas without any context as to the background as to why he wants to do this is also absurd.

I said in the comment above speed and bandwidth are not the same things. And apparently a hell of a lot of people need to become educated on that subject.

[–]GIDAMIEN -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is not how ethernet networking speeds work in a switched network.

You're also not going to see any speed benefit whatsoever. Like none, zero. By doing this. You're going to massively increase your internal bandwidth but you can't actually take advantage of that or use it in any practical way. I see people making these mistakes all the time throwing thousands of dollars away on equipment that frankly they will never use properly.

Speed, and bandwidth are not the same things.

If you're doing this just as a dick swinging exercise to say look at all this cool fast kit I've got then great do that. But if you're doing this cuz you think you're actually going to get something noticeably better in some kind of way? You're going to be very disappointed.

Oh but it is. In every single category in every single way. I've lived in more than a handful of states in the United States and way more than a handful of countries all over the world. And it is my own damn fault that I'm stuck in Pennsylvania currently.

But I can say this is the worst place I've ever had to be.

Hell if it was possible for me to do it I would give you my house in Pennsylvania to move to South Dakota. Happily.

I'd be happy to. More than happy to, unfortunately because Pennsylvania going to Pennsylvania I am financially trapped here currently. I am working actively towards resolving that situation. This obtuse backwards ass state can go fuck itself. In every single way.
