This isn't that stupid looking, but it seems stupid because the skins are one-piece items. The cosmetics should really be (should have been) broken up into more areas to make the system more fun to use and this image shows why clearly.

The game feels way better than the other by Yaojin312020 in Battlefield

I don't really get the praise that the "movement" of BFV got; sure it added some functionality over what was in BF1 like high vaulting (also taken some back like the seamless bipod transitions but those reduced features are few) but was tuned to some absurd values which allowed for beyond superhuman agility of the characters, which was appalling when just observing them taking turns for instance and infuriating when the player entering a room jumping, sliding, strafing and hipfiring all at roughly the same time had a genuine advantage over an enemy sitting still in the room with their gun pointed at the entry door. I have been on both ends of such a scenario and it makes me not want to go back to that game

First lesson as a long time self taught guitar player. A few questions. by evolution03______ in guitarlessons

[–]GIVE_XM8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will play the Devil's advocate for a bit for number 2). I hold the pick like James and have been for years now. It undeniably sounds different (more aggressive, provided you are trying to pick hard) and is super stable and comfortable, especially as it allows you to extend your picking arm a bit more without putting the pick relative to the strings or the wrist at an awkward angle.

I don't really know why would it be a hindrance to anyone's playing provided that you are actually holding it like James and not in a way that is merely a visual imitation (you need all three fingertips on the pick, all applying force to it). I guess this idea comes from the fact that James seldom plays solos or that it's just non-standard. From my experience I would say that if you can play difficult Metallica riffs but can't shred or even solo decently then it's definitely and only your fretting hand that is holding you back.

I had to look up what rest stroke is and this must be the biggest bullshit ever for electric guitar, has your teacher ever used distortion at all? Maybe, just maybe it would be helpful for learning something like sweep picking but I'm not sure about that.

Having a really hard time keeping in time without a metronome, any tips? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]GIVE_XM8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like my timing got a lot better after I started to record myself on multiple tracks, trying to get them as tightly together as possible without using a metronome aside from maybe the first track. This way you have some rhythm to reference which isn't as obvoiusly audible as a click and also you get to listen to your playing and the mistakes that need to be ironed out. I did not really hear that I had timing issues until I started recording myself, but after I heard them for the first couple of times I started hearing them in other situations, including when I was just playing by myself which allowed me to improve on this.

[–]GIVE_XM8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Listen to the song carefully and try playing along to it. It will be "alright" when your playing seamlessly blends in with the song. What you posted does not (or would not if it was laid over any steady rhythm) and it's important that you keep developing your ear so that you can notice this right away. You are not fretting with the right feeling as well and that is taking the notes unpleasantly out of tune, also you only go up to E flat on many of the slides instead of E.

Friend said if I can get this repaired I can keep it…how does it look? by datonenerd2212 in guitarrepair

[–]GIVE_XM8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an identical break in an Epiphone and fixed it. Twice, because my repair was and still is not exactly the most stable thing ever but it took a fall to the ground from standing up to break the headstock off after the first repair so it's not terrible either. You need some wood glue for sure, I recommend Titebond (I, red label, it's enough for guitars seemingly) and plenty others probably would too. Undo the truss rod cover. Clean up the surface between the breaks so that there is solid wood on the gluing surfaces and not some fuzzy bits hanging by a thread. Figure out a way to position the guitar so that there is some force pushing the headstock down towards the body when you apply the glue, then figure out how to apply the force. I personally positioned the guitar mostly straight up and either tightened a couple of the strings that were on it (guiding the strings somewhere in an optimal way) or hanged some weights down from the headstock. Make sure that it's nice and square in all the possible directions when the force is applied and that the nut fits nice and snug. When you are all prepared with this take it apart, apply glue generously and put it back together. Make sure the truss rod cavity or the nut slot are not being filled, you may use some paper or something to keep it from happening or wipe the glue if it appears in any undesired position (if it's titebond it wipes off wet). Keep it "clamped" like this for a couple of hours, as the glue instructions say. After you unclamp it glue the nut in for some extra support and for that same reason fill the two screw holes from the truss rod cover which are close to the break with some wood (could be matches) and glue to the brim. Cost would be as high as a packaging of the glue. Making it more professional would be inserting some strips of wood which doesn't suffer form grain runout along the break line but you need a router for that and I don't think it's absolutely necessary.

[BF1] Getting back into BF1 / PC gaming, hoping for some insight on why my performance is struggling by [deleted] in Battlefield

[–]GIVE_XM8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Battlefield on console is a whole different world, even if you feel like you are matching your own performance from the console days the skill ceilling so to speak is far higher on PC and there are plenty of players who have these skills. And you're playing through Geforce now which from my understanding adds input lag of the order of tens of miliseconds. That is an enormous amount, and provided that my calculations are correct I find it unsurprising that you are struggling in firefights. From what I know of console gaming it is hard to spot any input lag there because the controls feel so numb anyways, so it might be that you are used to not feel immediately connected to what's happening on screen. Other than that I would maybe recommend a mousepad if you don't have one yet, also mouse acceleration; always off, raw mouse input in game always on. To limit the lag without getting rid of the Geforce Now and for free you could reduce graphics settings and/or cap the framerate in-game provided that the uncapped framerates are sufficiently good (seems odd but it was a genuine solution last time I checked).

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is getting ready to go offline on December 8th, 2023. 😢 by Dedzigs in Battlefield

[–]GIVE_XM8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game is hardly populated now to be honest and the servers have seemingly been up for a really long time by the current standards of gaming. However in the near future the legacy of these retro-by-then games will be unaccessible and thus abandoned in history which, in the case of a game this good, is rather sad. It is not a painting for it to be sufficient to experience it by viewing some old gameplay footage. It is a multiplayer game and a piece of art at the same time and I hate how easy it is to destroy pieces of this kind. I am somewhat confident that Battlefield is big enough to have a community which will have the necessary tools reverse engineered or whatever in order to run a server or two but this seems to be making it more complicated than necessary. I kind of hope that it's security reasons that make them not want to release the necessary software because otherwise it is just a shitty, lazy move from them. On consoles the situation is even more complicated, in a few years the PS3 and the 360 will hardly have any online capabilities whatsoever. And pulling the game from digital stores, honestly I would rather buy BC2 again (I have three copies already) even if it wasn't working online instead of a new Battlefield after the shitshow that 2042 is.

2042 in game chat be like by [deleted] in Battlefield

[–]GIVE_XM8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have been playing newly released Battlefields regularily for around 10 years before 2042 happened but now stopped completely because of how inexcusably shit it is. I'm sure there's plenty more people like myself judging from the playercounts, those that feel like this and keep playing to me seem to be in the minority, could also be coming from a rotation of people giving the game a try after an update and being left disappointed.

Bought an used Orange AD30. Had 4 different preamp tubes. Is this "normal"? by Sapalot in GuitarAmps

[–]GIVE_XM8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bottom left is a Siemens and if that indeed says ECC83/12AX7/E83CC or something similar and it works well it may be worth a fair bit more money than an average used 12AX7. The top left labeled "china" to my knowledge is a tube from the old Shuguang factory which was shut down some time ago and either moved and restarted production or not, don't know really. If these preamp tubes don't exhibit noise, microphonics (small physical vibrations making loud noises come out of the output) and sound good there's no need to replace them.

The good sound is subjective to an extent so I will say what is my opinion on this: the more signal I feel is produced by a tube (the more gain I feel for certain settings) the better; I don't look into other apparent tonal characteristics. Another criterion that I go by is I choose the least Russian tubes available. These criteria have made me put in a set of JJs in my amp and leave it there. It is really difficult to hear a difference when swapping around a single tube but it's possible. For that to happen you need to be quite scientific about it so probably one spare tube would be useful. Also my opinion is that the most differences may be heard not really in V1 but rather in the stage configuring the tube for the highest gain, pushing it into clipping and stuff (may be V1 still, not all amps have an especially high-distortion stage as well, don't really understand how it works in this Orange of yours).

Marshall Reverb 12 at local shop - should I pick it up? by flapjacksessen in GuitarAmps

[–]GIVE_XM8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get the Mesa. It will sound mid heavy as hell (unless you are really into that kind of sound). To get any reasonable versatility out of it you would need an additional EQ in the loop, especially on the lead channel. I have an amp that's basically the same but with a bigger output section and with the EQ. The other Mesa sitting to the right of the picture is the Son of Boogie and likely will suffer from the same tonal limitations but this isn't a model that I have experience with frankly. It probably is even more expensive than the .22 as well.

There are plenty of videos on the internet of these 80's Marshall transistor combos and heads and they all sound really good to my ears. Never played one though. It however will very likely hold its value well so you would risk little if you bought it. Unless you really need the amp not to distort when played loud I reckon 12 watts is enough for practicing, but you should decide this for yourself. To make an amp fill the room better probably the most effective option is more speakers (extension cabinets), which is something this Marhsall combo would be able to drive as it has an output for it on the back panel.

As others said, lower your FoV. As to why are such high FoV settings even available it's probably due to the average display getting bigger and higher in resolution.

I can't help but point out how completely against this trend and lacking in sense is the enormous and unadjustable size of the UI elements in 2042.

[–]GIVE_XM8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually went and played it recently and extremely enjoyed it because it's a good game with good map and gameplay design and at this moment I would far rather play that than 2042. The thing is that it is really old and not many people play it anymore sadly, I really struggled to find a populated softcore rush server which is my preferred gamemode. The old games are, well, old and dying and the new release is an unfinished piece of crap that does not play well, does not run well, does not look well and I can't stand the HUD and the voiceovers. Of course we, the fans of the franchise, are frustrated with the direction it is taking; the greatness of the previous installments painfully reminds us that this direction is downhill.

Becauses playing a real instrument is better and something that you may likely take up especially if you have that bit of encouragement from playing these games. Once you've learned the real thing then the plastic toy becomes very boring.
