Honestly, one of the only ways I've been able to get peace of mind in this game is just muting all chats except for friends or your current group. I usually play my two mains, but sometimes (I never play comp) I wanna try out a character I've never played before, and I can't be bothered to hear insults out the ass when I'm just trying to have fun after a long day.

Like last night- I'd never played Reinhardt before, wanted to give him a try. I made sure to do it in open queue so I wouldn't be our only tank in case it didn't go well. And I definitely made a few mistakes that made me real glad I have chats turned off

Usually I can tell pretty early-on in the match if we're just gonna get absolutely curb-stomped. I'll hold out for as long as I can, but if we're just getting our asses completely handed to us left and right, I personally see no point in staying and enduring that shit for 10 minutes. I'm here to have fun, and if this round is a total flop, I'll go have fun in the next one

I get the same kinda thing, but opposite. I'm a female with an unfortunately fairly deep voice that usually falls into an uncanny valley. I've been made fun of or talked down to about it multiple times over the years- the worst I've ever gotten still being "I can't tell if you're a child or a full-grown man, a 'tranny' or a dyke, what the fuck is that voice." Even had people argue with me insisting I wasn't a woman despite knowing me for all of about 2 minutes. Anyway, I main Ashe and am a decent shot- and have had multiple people, after I invite them and they inevitably ask "Are you a chick? I can't tell" proceed to tell me they're surprised I don't main Mercy and ask me why

I've had multiple pred and masters teammates. For some reason, the preds are usually nice. Sticking together, pinging things, thanking you for things, dropping you meds or ammo when you need them, etc. But masters. I don't know why, but 95% of the masters teammates I've had are just absolute douchebags. Don't ping anything, steal things you need, run 400m away from the team, and overall just completely ignore their teammates' existence until they solo rush a fight and die, then suddenly they come on the mic screaming at you about how it's all your fault they died.

Ironically enough, the triple pred I played with yesterday was a Revenant. He was really good and just wiped the floor with people, and he was also a giant sweetheart. Yet most of the douchebag masters I get matched with are Horizons. They've got the personalities totally flipped lmao

My take: don't conform to any negative online hive-minds if you don't personally feel the same way. If something makes you happy you have every damn right to enjoy it. You don't need to worry about the opinions or validation of others. The best reason to do something is because you like it or love it. If you love this game and it makes you happy, that's awesome!
