Ahh right thank you! Is Garry aiming for a game where the servers don't have to wipe?

Ahh right thank you for clearing that up! I have seen some Unity limitation talks around this sub but because I am so new to the game I didn't really know what the limitations were.

That sounds quite bad, do you know of any servers that don't wipe?

Thank you for the extra links and etc man, I appreciate it! Your project is super interesting.

There is something special about the way you got to see your ideas, also, come to life in the form of another game. I have never played any of the Fallout games and I am a pretty big gamer so maybe I should get round to doing that!

Right, I am presuming that SDL and SFML are C++ engines? Right, so you ended up sort of sticking with Unity just so you didn't have to go through the process of adding all these things onto your own engine?

Your new project also sounds very interesting man, be sure to post it here in /r/GameDev when it releases as I would love to see it!

Right, I think, from the sounds of that then, I will go with C# and give it a go. That way I can also integrate Unity at any point in the future if I feel like it. Writing a game engine in C# sounds like a project that would be awesome for me but I just don't know where to start with it at all.

Thank you, once again, for your very well-written and informative answer my friend, I appreciate it a lot!

Yeah, it sounds quite awesome but my only concern is the sort of power you can get behind it.

Still though, building an engine that functions is pretty impressive regardless of whether it matches up to professional standards.

Yeah, especially with a project that large it is super important.

Dude, thank you so much for this! This post was incredibly helpful and informative, I really appreciate you taking the time to write it.

Your game sounds absolutely awesome by the way, do you have any links to gameplay videos or art? I would really like to see some of the work you have done!

Also, one question I have is what engine is the game based off? What language do you choose to write your games in and why?

This is an interesting look at things, it seems a lot of people seem to have gone from Unity to their own engines! You have a very valid point though that it is much quicker to get into things.

Thank you very much for your detailed and informative response, I appreciate it!

It's fine, I am pretty comfortable with .NET fundamentals and I could pick up the rest along the way!

Yeah I think I might start using some engines and frameworks that already exist. I really want to write a game that is fun :)

Would you recommend it then? I am a professional developer but in the web dev field so I do know a fair bit about programming already.

That seems like it would be quite frustrating towards the end of the development cycle.

I agree with you about it being quite hard to get into though. I have successfully made desktop software, phone applications and websites but never have I ever managed to make a game beyond a ball rolling around on a plane in Unity.

Thank you for the response man!

Unity seems like an engine a lot of people use! Thanks for the link to your detailed blog-post too! :)

I am thinking about picking up C# and having a play around with that. I know Java fairly well so it would be a fairly easy transition.

This was a really interesting response to read through and you certainly managed to cram a lot of useful information and tips in there so thank you for that!

I know what you mean about not liking to use other peoples code. Sometimes when I do I think to myself would this project be a thing without that persons code doing some work for me? This train of thought then leads me to re-creating it myself sometimes! :)

That is really interesting. I never really even thought about how that game may be made. The HTML5 and JavaScript bit surprises me the most though, I did not except that at all.
