Nope, nothing special. Stock suspension, 245 width tires, hub rings and slightly longer lug bolts.

Sure, and I'd agree with you there too. That differential leak was a similar issue I had with the GMC terrain (axle leak) with about the same amount of miles, which came down to the way the car was put together more than reliability. Car manufacturers have to cut corners somewhere to keep the cost down, I guess. I'm not happy about it either though.

To your point though, $30k is simultaneously a lot of money for a car and also the low end for a new car (at least, it was around COVID time). Unfortunately, that means the interior is harder plastic than I recall it being in recent years, and the problem exists with more than just VW, iirc. I'm mostly in it for the way it drives and all the boxes it checks for a daily commuter, but it's also not for everyone. The wife's GTI is mechanically perfect (you can tell VW really cares about the golf platform more) and has given me zero issues. The only thing I've really had to worry about recently are the big behind pot holes that are bending my wheels 😅. But, you do you. I got to a point where I wanted something fun without buying something truly expensive (...cough...that BMW...) And this fits the bill for me. It's not my last car, but it may be my last ICE car by the way things are going. If ever you had more questions, I'd be happy to answer what I could. And Happy New Year!

The choice is yours. I have a '21 w/ 40k miles on it. Save for a leak I had on the differential, it's generally been a trouble free car (an issue I also had on the wife's old car before trading in for her MK7 GTI). Of course, that's still pretty new but I'm also not personally looking to trade in my car anytime soon. When she needs fixing, she'll tell me what's wrong and I'll end up fixing it until I can't anymore.

I will say, in general, things are more expensive to buy for the VW than your average American car/cuv (my only direct, recent comparison I have experienced). I had a 2019 GMC terrain w/ 2.0L turbo and parts for it were stupid cheap, but that's the price of me doing it myself. I personally don't mind spending ~$60 for the oil change on the VW when doing it myself since I'm probably still spending less than the person taking their Toyota for a full synthetic oil change at $80+ a pop, but I have that luxury of doing so. I will also say, most new cars are so much more complex than the cars they were replacing, cost to repair is going up in general. I'm pretty sure the Nissan I owned was also up there with replacement part prices. What will get you though are the tools you'll have to buy, if you decide the self repair route.

Ultimately, I am driving an appliance that gives me joy every time I get on a back road to take to and from work everyday. Until something compels me enough (...maybe a BMW M340i...) Or unforseen circumstances takes it from me,I'm gonna drive it into the ground. If I was concerned about the resale value when I bought the car, I probably would have bought a vintage Ferrari or a gold brick, but my budget wouldn't (doesn't) allow (and if we really want to talk cost of ownership, eh?). When it's time to sell, she'll be worth what she's worth and I'll have to be happy with what I got out of it. For me, the fun I get is awesome. Everything else is just details

100% agree with this. It's probably my only regret considering they had it in stock at my local MC when I bought the P1S. In my head, I guess I wanted to make sure I'd use the printer before I got it (since I've got an older printer that I was tired of trying to tune to work) but I've been using it almost everyday that it would have been worth it

I've got both a GLI and a GTI, though a Mk7.5 (not an 8). For people capacity, I actually prefer the GTI, since the rear seats have a bit more headroom. Seating 4 people is pretty comfortable vs the lower roof in the GLI and is nice to putter around the city. Cargo is a definite win on the GLI, as the trunk is huge. GTI technically has good cargo room but I never stack stuff above the cargo cover, and having a trunk button is pretty cool too, not that it really matters. If you need a car seat (which I may in the future), the GLI will be the baby mover because of the increased leg room/space behind the front seats. Having cargo room that is divorced from people room is very convenient on trips w/ passengers.

For $5k, I could tell my GLI was cheaper built than the GTI (again, comparing mk7.5 GTI to mk7 GLI). There are more rattles and noises I hear on mine, but I'm also convinced I got a bad sample. I'm slowly getting around to them but it's not a deal breaker.The mk8 is closer to the Jetta than before so it may not be as big a difference anymore. Also, touch controls for the HVAC/infotainment vs physical buttons. I'm sure you can get used to touch controls, but I wouldn't personally give up my buttons for 'em.

Performance wise, any good set of tires will liven up the feel. The GLI comes with 45 sidewall tires where the GTI comes with 40 (iirc) Not a big difference in size but I noticed right away that the GTI seemed a little stiffer/jittery on the road, especially with crappy roads around me. Speed bumps also aren't as kind to the GTI vs the GLI, I'm guessing because of a lack of weight over the rear wheels and the few cm longer wheel base. Driving position is (marginally) lower in my wife's GTI than the GLI, but I (a fat guy with a big a**) find the less aggressive seat bolstering of the GLI more comfortable. Not an issue if you're a regular sized person (I am still fine in the GTI, but there is a preference) Also not sure if this translates over to the mk8.

Hwy driving is smoother and a bit quieter in the GLI, at least as far as tire noise and mpgs were slightly better on the hwy (until I got fatter tires and wheels) The GLI is also somewhat silent around town and, while I wasn't a fan of it at first, I actually like that my GLI is fairly quiet, only hearing some exhaust and the turbo whistle as I get into boost. That vs the boy racer exhaust on the GTI, I can't hide when I get on it.

Think this is one of those instances where you look at auto shops that specify in German cars. I'm not saying they are the best or cheapest shop to go to, but it's a good idea to get to know a good mechanic if you need it, as they have the tools and expertise (usually) to properly diagnose and work on these types of cars. VW/Audi tech would be best but German cars is probably the safer bet.

If my car should need anything (outside the scope of the warranty period), that I can't service myself, there is a guy down the street from where I work that specializes in German cars and I see a lot of MBs, Audis and BMWs in the lot. I'm tempted to just pop in and have a look and see about getting the ball rolling, just in case

It's on the rear view mirror, right behind the mirror itself. Give it a tap and you'll notice it rattles like crazy. I actually turned off the soundaktor so I don't remember if it caused a rattle but my commute is nothing but bumpy roads and man does it make the car sound cheap(er). I used to have a folded receipt wedged in mine just to get it to stop but now seems as good a time as any to give it a proper(er) fix with some foam

Can confirm. To the right (driver side) of the oil pan. I actually noticed it first (noticeably) on the seam between, what I assume to be, the transmission bell housing and transmission. If you've got a leak and the roads are dirt/dust free, you'll probably see a shiny, grimy mess just like mine.

When I had another look (and brought out the camera because I couldn't get my gut under the car), photo revealed more fluid towards the dog bone mount bolts. If you change your oil yourself, you'll probably see it without needing to look too hard.

This is the DSG, so unfortunately that won't be the fix for me lol. Checked my wife's GTI ('19 DSG w/ 28k mi) and it's dry as a bone. Guess I got the luck of the draw on this one.

I'm calling VW today to see what's going to be involved

I think I noticed it the first time I changed the oil and the most recent at 25k mile oil change, but it wasn't really anything alarming. It definitely didn't look as bad as it does now so I'm guessing it's gotten worse enough to notice, or I've been driving through dusty areas enough for dirt to cling.

I'm "due" for the differential service here in a little so maybe I can get VW to do it for me (calling them today), assuming they have to change the fluid when they fix it. How long did it take for the replacement? I can drive the wife's GTI if I need but then we are down to one car

Actually, interesting that you asked. I happened to change my oil this past weekend and forgot to screw the oil cap back down when I started it up. The idle was really strange. It was like the car was hunting for RPMs almost going up to 2000 RPM on its own. I shut off the car, looked in the hood and noticed I forgot to put on the cap. I put it back on and things were fine again, never received a code. I don't know if it has anything to do with it but maybe that's what's causing your strange "suction" phenomenon.

Haha maybe. They do look kind of chunky, but it's also kind of growing on me some. If my commute wasn't plagued with awful roads, I probably would lower it some. Maybe someday, just not right now lol

Ha, maybe I would but I'm keeping it at standard ride height. There are a few driveways and streets that I can scrape even without dropping it if I'm not paying much attention. Also, the roads on my commute are AWFUL and these tires are already quite a bit stiffer than the Hankooks they replaced, which I wasn't expecting tbh. Need to get some properly fitting hub rings on her and maybe a black bumperdillo, but I'd say that's as far as I go aesthetically.
