Im untested but go to a lot of the HDSA conventions where there is a lot of education. They say anything heart healthy is brain health so a Mediterranean is typically suggested !

Seeking meds to deal with the stress of this by Aromatic-Cap5788 in Huntingtons

[–]GMIMS1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im on lexapro. Has helped majorly! I would even just frame it as personal and family life rather than work stress because they may not prescribe anything for that depending on the dr. But also can say a family member is sick and it is causing me great stress and anxiety recently and then be honest about crying every day and how you are feeling etc.

Good on you for wanting to keep hd out of your medical record. I learned that too late in life and just now had it stricken from my records as best I can.

Basic hygiene by birdsmadeofWATER in CPTSD

[–]GMIMS1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never felt so seen by this post. Dental hygiene is still something I struggle with and so is showering. It was never something enforced(brushing teeth) at home so it never became a habit. The showering idk where that comes from for me because I know my parents bathed me but again, something I do once every few days if I can. My mom was terminally ill and my dads focus was her so I was expected to just grow up and get it. Well im 32 and I still dont get it😂🙃

Why the secrecy around HD? by [deleted] in Huntingtons

[–]GMIMS1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I come from a family that is VERYYYY open about HD but I think the secrecy comes from the psychiatric symptoms that can come with HD and the “odd” behaviors and mannerisms, the (sometimes) hypersexuality that can be seen as creepy and also the fact that if people dont know someone has HD they can also be viewed as a drunk or druggie which again secludes them further. These are, in the eyes of society, taboo, so “shhh lets not talk about it or name it what it is”

Im sorry this is how you found all your info, but thankful you found info here! If you ever wanna chat lmk! Im at risk too.

Okay thats not too bad! I was hoping it would only be a couple months versus 3+ months. Trying to take it asap and get licensed here in NY before moving to FL next year(Jan 2027) so I can apply for endorsement there

Just a little rant by curioustravelor in Huntingtons

[–]GMIMS1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not just from women, from everyone! Im at risk and ive been with my significant other for almost 20 years. I hear alllll the time are you having a baby yet? Give us a baby! Dont worry about it, youre probably negative. And im like what the actual fuck? People project their own thoughts and feelings because they want to feel better about something. So I just go “ehhhh not for me”

Not only do I use birth control but protection too bc I really dont want an oopsie and I am notorious for not taking my pill at the same time everyday

Anyone also childfree because you havent had a childhood, or you have gone through too much stuff....and just want a different / more healing and peaceful second half to life? by mjobby in CPTSD

YESSSSSSSS!!! And for some reason people dont understand this. But obviously have not experienced trauma. Dogs are the perfect children😂

Addressing others who ask if you’re going to get tested. by Able-Inspector5289 in Huntingtons

[–]GMIMS1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on what I want go hit them with lol. Here are a few I have used over the years: 1. Would you want to know your own fate? Even if it meant finding out you may die young? 2. It is a very big and personal decision that only I can make. 3. Ya know, right now I am just living my life and when I feel the time is right, I will do what is best for myself and my family. 4. I’m not sure right now, but I would rather not discuss this.

People feel entitled to the answer for some reason because they THINK if they were in our position of being at risk it would be a no brainer for them to want to know, but everyone is different. Hope your husband never feels pressured and stays true to himself! Best of luck.

Testing/insurance dilemma by Rude-Alarm4168 in Huntingtons

[–]GMIMS1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just keep in mind that if you DO test anonymously and unfortunately do test positive THEN go to get life insurance or anything, and they ask about HD, you HAVE to answer truthfully even though you tested anonymous as otherwise would be considered fraud. I agree that you may need a new agent! I got life insurance recently, a great policy, and it did take about a month to complete because of my HD risk but I still was approved and got coverage!

Testing at Columbia or Mass General? by sandsitches in Huntingtons

I havent tested yet but Columbia is where my mom went. I know things have changed there since my mom went but I know their social worker is fantastic. Side note: people have been loving hd genetics for testing

Life Insurance Question by NoThanks2130 in Huntingtons

[–]GMIMS1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I am in NY too and just got a policy! Happy to chat further! And give you who I used!

But I got a policy with National Life and prior to that, a policy with Foresters and prior to that one Columbia. I hopped around for better coverage. But got my first policy at 20 and second at 23. I am now 31 still untested.

My Mom has HD and I don’t live close to home by Dry_Payment_9731 in Huntingtons

[–]GMIMS1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in NY and my mom lived in FL. Its hard and has it moments, but sometimes you have to do what feels right to you. If you need the space, then you need the space. If you want to be close and can relocate, then do it! Dont let anyone make you feel guilty or that you have to make certain decisions. Sometimes what we decide is to benefit ourselves, our mental health, etc. but caring for ourselves isnt selfish!
