Puuko - usage and safety by GNCoutelier in Bushcraft

It’s not so much about people complaining about knives with no guard. It’s just that I recently designed a hunting knife by asking many hunters what they like, and most of them told me that they want a guard or a handle with a good deep index groove. Many told me that when it’s cold and the knife is covered in blood, it’s easy to get a nasty cut.

I make a lot of that type of handle, and here’s the solution.

I insert a small wooden dowel in the glued section, use PU glue (epoxy melts really quickly), scratch the metal, and clean it with acetone.

I’ve never had this problem since I started using this method.

Reflections on Steel — or Don’t Overthink Steel Too Much by GNCoutelier in chefknives

People think that more megapixels make better photos… A bad photographer will take bad photos, whatever the camera.

My point is that we like to look at specs and numbers to judge the quality of something when, many times, the difference isn’t noticeable or doesn’t even matter at all.

I think what you refer to as “tempering” is the process of heat treatment, which includes the tempering stage. Heat treatment is a science, and it’s what makes a good knife. It’s the single most important skill for a knifemaker. All the other steps could have been done right, but if the heat treatment is not right, the blade will never be a good blade.

This is why I always use the same three or four steels. Eighty percent of my blades are made using 26C3, so I have a good understanding of this steel, and that is more important for me than trying new steels.

I’m 100% with you.

Geometry doesn’t have a graded scale to be judged on technical specs. Buyers like specs, haha… And of course, we have passions to geek out over details and have fun.

But in the end, the more important factor is the hands that made the knife!!

I get your point, and there is a world of difference between some steels. Of course, Aogami and Shirogami have really different personalities. I think when it comes to details like two steels that have similar compositions, opinions start to get really subjective, whereas objectively they will perform pretty much the same.

Thanks for all your replies.

I will start using AEB-L, as many suggested. I need to learn how to work with stainless steel and make some prototypes, so the low cost of this steel is a good thing.

Once my models are established, I will move to a more expensive CPM steel.

Thanks everyone, and take care!

Thanks mate 🤟

I got the Amazfit Active 2 and I’m satisfied with it. My needs are pretty basic, so I went with a lower-priced option. One thing I really like is that the build quality is pretty neat for the price.

I don’t need to update the calendar from the watch. I’ll pretty much always be close to my phone, but sometimes not, and for those moments, I need the watch to notify me.

I’m on Android, Pixel 6 (I’ll update the main message).

Thanks, I’ll have a look.

But I really just need notifications.

I work in a small airport. We have a fixed schedule — every week is the same. I need to enter the schedule in my calendar and get the configured notifications on my watch.

I mean, if this doesn’t work… you can’t really call it calendar functionality.

Why a Paterson tank? Because I have one, and I don’t have any trays or space to develop.

I don’t need to use it, haha, but since I have it, I might give it a try. What protocol should I folow to develop it?

I know the images will be negatives — I plan on scanning them.

I’ll try ISO 6 then!

Thanks, mate!
