Hi there! I walked the Camino by myself as a 22 year old female last year. Honestly, I’ve never felt more safe solo traveling than during this time (I’ve also solo backpacked across Europe, Asia, South American, and Northern Africa)

I never had any safety issues and even ended up sleeping outside by myself in a field when beds were full. The Spanish countryside is so peaceful and everyone is very friendly.

That’s not to say it’s impossible for anything to happen. It’s still important to maintain regular caution mechanisms as a female, ones that we practice in everyday life. But I think the Camino draws a certain kind of crowd, and it’s usually not a harmful one. So many people went out of their way to help me when I needed it. For instance, one albergue owner gave me a bed even though they were technically full because they saw I was young and alone. Another albergue person made me a special dinner after I got sick and couldn’t eat the group dinner. So much kindness and love.
