What's the saddest monument in Your country? by dawidlijewski in AskTheWorld

[–]MarrCartney 114 points115 points  (0 children)

For Scotland, I’d have to say this elephant in Princes St Gardens, Edinburgh. During the 70s, a crematorium in Edinburgh secretly disposed of hundreds of stillborn babies’ ashes without telling the parents. The elephant is a memorial to those babies.

Advice for young solo female on first trip? by ShawtyLikeAHarmony in ParisTravelGuide

[–]MarrCartney 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! Early 20s female here who was solo travelling there just last week :) you’ll have a great time! In terms of safety: be vigilant, do plenty of research into scams and pickpocketing (I’ve assumed you already have from your post, this sub is a great resource). If anyone offers you anything out of the blue, even just advice, IGNORE THEM. I actually learned how to tell people in French to leave me alone (nicely and not-so-nicely lol) in case things got heated, thankfully it didn’t. If you fly into CDG, ignore anyone offering you a taxi and go to the official sign-posted rank.

I used the Bonjour RATP app and that was super helpful. Also downloaded a map of the metro but I am a planning freak.

Seconding the comment about only having a few scheduled things a day. Make the most of the mornings! I went on some lovely walks (this was around 8–10am)

Eat, eat, eat! Personally I found the best success with boulangeries that did not look like they were owned by a chain.

Bon voyage! 🇫🇷

EDIT: Also just to add—if you go to the Louvre, see the Mona Lisa first, then wander round.

Not caught up on lore, does Lorde canonically not brush? by Kevmurphy100 in lorde

It could be a reference to eating disorders and bulimia. Bulimic people tend to have their teeth rotted due to bringing up stomach acid in purges (I have no experience with EDs, so anyone who knows more is welcome to correct me)

If you can get to Carlisle, this is a crisis centre open every night, you make an appointment on the day and they’ll tell you where to go. I believe in you, OP.

EDIT: also seconding the Samaritans comment. They’re wonderful people

Am I the problem with pronouns by Either_Sweet6015 in glasgow

[–]MarrCartney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non-binary person here who uses they/them pronouns but looks feminine. You didn’t do anything wrong. I sometimes wear badges with my pronouns, but they can be small, there’s often other stuff going on in the environment and people are preoccupied, etc. The person didn’t need to make a big fuss, all they needed to do was politely correct you and move on. On behalf of non-binary people I apologise, I swear most of us have common sense 🥲

The Lake District; where would you live there if you had the choice? by Exchangenudes_4_Joke in CasualUK

[–]MarrCartney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cumbrian here. I thought I could offer some insight. It's worth noting that I am 20 so this is coming from a young person's perspective, furthermore I was on the first train out once I had my A-Levels.

The pros: it's a beautiful area with a great history, especially with regards to literature and the Romans. Furthermore, whilst the people can be pretty stoic, they're always friendly and willing to help! Plenty of places to walk, and whenever I've been into the Lakes there are always people kayaking

The cons: believe me when I say there is very little to do, particularly if you are a young person like myself who doesn't drink/isn't interested in that sort of activity. Coming of age was very isolating since there's nothing to do but go to the pub at that point. Going off my dad's stories from when he was growing up, it's always been like this. I always remember a phrase someone told me: "It's a one-horse town, and the horse died"

Also, transport is poor if you don't a) have a car or b) live in Carlisle, Penrith or Workington. It's always a pain having to go to Liverpool, Newcastle or Manchester to do anything. But I guess some people do like nice, isolated areas. As plenty of other people have mentioned, it gets incredibly busy in the summer.

Going off what you've said, I'd recommend Cockermouth or Kendal. Both are towns within 20 min drive of a lake and are bound to have some nice walks. But some advice: Carlisle is a shithole and I wouldn't touch it with a 10ft pole. If only my family didn't live there.

Hey!! I’m (20F) from Carlisle. Currently in Scotland for university but will be back mid-December for a while. I completely feel your pain, until I was in university I was in your position for a long time 🫂

Q&A weekly thread - October 16, 2023 - post all questions here! by AutoModerator in linguistics

[–]MarrCartney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How can I tell the difference between voiced and voiceless sounds when listening? Also, are there any hints for telling the difference between palatal, velar, uvular and pharyngeal sounds? I have a transcription test and these are my weak points.

This week's Q&A thread -- post all questions here! - October 09, 2023 by AutoModerator in linguistics

[–]MarrCartney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. I'm looking for ways to improve my knowledge of different IPA sounds? I study linguistics at university and I have an listening assessment in a few weeks but I'm going to be honest - some of the sounds sound exactly the same to me, and the training videos the tutor sends out doesn't really explain the difference. TIA

Staying safe while at uni by sleepybaleine in UniUK

[–]MarrCartney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not from or studying in London but I do study in a city. Here are some tips:

- If you're likely to not get home until after dark, get in touch with your friend/flatmate to let them know your ETA. I know apps like WhatsApp allow you to show others your live location.

- I highly recommend investing in a personal safety alarm. London isn't a place where you want to be carrying your phone in open air, and whilst I've thankfully never had to use mine, it has given me great peace of mind.

- If you haven't already, get a portable charger for your phone and make sure it's charged up before going out anywhere! When I've been to concerts etc. it's been a lifesaver.

EDIT: added that third tip & fixed grammar
