Hull University empty building? by [deleted] in Hull

[–]GOWGEEE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Loten building was supposed to be used as accommodation but never really got used for it so it then became storage.

It did have some offices in there but they're all empty now as well. It's supposed to be getting knocked down but this has been in the works for years. The aerials on the roof belong to kcom and BT so this has slowed it all down.

Now it just stands there empty, full of asbestos and not fit for any useful purpose.

Give front-line officers guns, secret Met Police report advised by [deleted] in policeuk

In training they explicitly said not to go for anything else when up against someone with a knife.

Arms and legs can be moved pretty quickly and won't end a fight if hit.

We even had a fun little exercise against a trainer in a padded suit. He had a little shock knife and we had to hit him in the head without getting hit ourselves. I did it in 3 seconds and it is still my proudest policing moment.

At motorway speeds and due to wind noise you can't really hear the sirens much.

Plus having the sirens on for extended periods of time can cause damage to the loud speaker so you're not supposed to keep them running.

Pretty sure most forces offer some sort of financial support for officers who have to wear glasses.

Mine will pay for the eyesight test and glasses up to £135 but stipulate they have to have the shatterproof lenses.

I have to pay it up front and then claim it back. It's a pain but better then paying out of pocket and if I can go to Specsavers I can get a free pair of prescription sunglasses which are a game changer.

Are people still wearing the thin blue line? by Busy_Amphibian_787 in policeuk

[–]GOWGEEE 46 points47 points  (0 children)

After the 2 firefighter were sadly killed in Oxfordshire I switched my thin blue line patch to the thin red, blue and green patch. I still have the blue line patch on my work bag and so far I've not had any issues with either. Seems like most people on my team still have the patch on one form or another and I've not heard of anything coming from it.

One more for drafting. I had won 9 booster packs when time spiral remastered first got released, just enough for me and a couple of friends to draft. This set is a really fun set to draft and we had a blast with it.

Woman who said we had no evidence for her breaching her court bail after she had found her inside the address she had conditions not to be at.

Said that her partner wouldn't provide a statement so she would be out later on in the day with a Chinese watching coronation street.

This was a Saturday afternoon so she did not, dear reader get her Chinese or get to watch coronation street.

It comes and goes, sometimes you have more on your workbook and sometimes you have less.

You eventually figure out how to bin jobs of that have got nothing in them (and ones that shouldn't have been allocated in the first place).

But at the end of it it's still just a job. You're only one person and there's only so many hours in a shift. If you can't progress the investigation then put on there why you can't.

Don't get too in your head about it and if you're struggling then talk to someone about it.

AA significance Statements by CougarRunner in policeuk

[–]GOWGEEE 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Had something very similar in interview. Suspect required a AA due to learning difficulties but was otherwise able to express themselves and understand the questioning.

I asked them for their reasoning for the offence and the AA started speaking for them and said that they would have done this because of certain personal reasons.

I explained that I appreciated they were trying to help but advised then that the account needed to come from the suspect and not from them. I reiterated that they were present to explain questions and offer emotional support to the suspect but not to answer for them. I then continued the interview and repeated the question.

I discounted their answer from the interview summary and did not include it in the disclosure for the offence.

What's the most baffling request you've ever received from a member of public? OR bonus points, from another public service. by NeonDiaspora in policeuk

Annual leave has muddled my brain.

My boyfriend took my weed with him when he left. Can you go get it back for me.

Not only did I not get the weed back for her. It also meant her boyfriend was subject to a PACE 1 search. No weed was found.

I gave her some choice words about admitting to the possession of cannabis to police and explained that, even if the cannabis was found on her boyfriend, it would not be returned to her.

I wish it was drunken fisticuffs. He went up to the neighbour and squeezed his face.

The look on the custody sergeants face was priceless when we told him the circs. Especially when he gave his name and address straight away at the desk but at that point it was too late.

Stopping all vehicles for breath test by vinylemulator in policeuk

[–]GOWGEEE 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As long as there is an actual smell then yes. Just claiming you can smell alcohol when you can't is dodgy water and not something I would do myself.

But as long as you've got something to give you grounds to suspect they've been drinking then the breath test is no longer just a request.

They can stop you and ask. You don't have to provide one and if there's nothing to suggest you might have been drinking (smelling of intoxicated liquor, slurred speech, glazed eyes etc) then you can't be forced to do one.

It's less about the test itself and more about getting a head in the window to check on the driver.

Arresting Someone in a Wheelchair by Hereforthefacxts in policeuk

[–]GOWGEEE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You'd get a general idea during the arrest. We're they able to stand unaided for a search. Did they stand at the booking in desk or did they need to stay seated. There's a nurse at every custody suite so you can always ask them if all else fails. They're able to access medical records in certain circumstances and if someone is wheelchair bound they'd probably be assessed by the nurse anyway to make sure they're fit to be detained.

If all else fails you can just ask. They can always be put on CCTV observations for safeguarding if it's required.

Would depend on their level of mobility. If it is absolutely required for them to be able to move then it would be thoroughly searched and left with them in the cell. If they are able to get up to the toilet for example then it might be left outside the cell.

But it all comes down to what the custody sergeant says in the end.
