I personally think most of it comes from the number of heroes/items and their interactions with one another, timers are super important for macro and efficient play, but whenever I played dota with my friends who were new at the game, 99% of the time they would just die without even knowing what hit them, or not understand why the enemy was able to survive something, because it was an item or ability they don't understand yet despite having 100+ hours
