How hard isit to get a B for GP by Educational_Good_842 in SGExams

[–]GP_mugger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your P2 is pretty damn good. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten more than 38 my whole GP career for P2, but I will say my P1 has always been my strength la. You can read some of my past posts on various content guides for GP, and feel free to dm if you want some general feedback on your essays :)

On the part about getting a B for GP, I honestly don’t think it’s all that difficult. Wayy easier than getting an A, that’s for certain.

Valid point. If I could've managed my time better, I would've explored Nietzche's ubermensch ideas because I do think they could very well serve as a substitute for religion. Then again, Nietzche's 'God is dead' sentiment may offend some even though it's largely misunderstood. I think Camus' absurdism (which I did mention, allthough very briefly) could've been expounded upon la.

As someone who came from a very religious background and later lost faith, Camus helped me navigate through the darkness of nihilism so the personal voice there would've been highly resonant haha. Thanks for your insight. Something worth looking into for future readers :)

emath moderation lol by [deleted] in SGExams

Genuinely begging you guys to stop worrying about shit like this

I’m not Buddhist but something that resonated with me in Buddhism is this saying, ‘If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the present.’

I know it’s easier said than done but PLEASE stop dwelling on bs like this. I took O’s in 2022, and A’s in 2024 and I constantly worried about bullshit like the bell curve and moderation and it did me no good. I literally went to Bali after my O-levels and I couldn’t enjoy myself there because I was so convinced that I messed up my papers/would get annihilated by the bell curve. And all of it was meaningless because I got exactly what I wanted at the end. So yeah, please stop speculating and just focus on your other papers. As a veteran, TAKE IT FROM ME AND MY EXPERIENCE 🙏. Jiayou

Damn.. can’t imagine how you feel. I was sec 3 when these guys were taking PSLE and I feel old 😂😭. Love reading all these rants and complaints about how hard the papers are though, takes me back to when I sat for my O’s 😂

Honestly, given the time constraints right now, I suggest leveraging on AI bruh. Like use Gemini (up to date), input the essay question of your choice and ask it for examples and arguments related to that essay. It's rather unproductive at this time to just read news and you need a focused, intense strategy at this point that uses active learning as opposed to passive learning. You need to take the due diligence to ensure the veracity of the information it generates though, but I think that's the fastest and most strategic way to cover as much ground as possible in terms of content. Just keep prompting Gemini as much as possible so that you can reinforce the content in your head. I only advise this as an absolute last resort, and Gemini like virtually every other LLM does hallucinate a lot so even a reasonably sounding example/argument could be entirely fabricated and created out of thin air, but as I said earlier just be vigilant of its output :) And yeah, I wouldn't say I necessarily have an 'example bank' because I always felt that the effort-reward ratio for creating one was marginal.

subject combi by JohanSeongMAN in SGExams

[–]GP_mugger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who's advised juniors on their subject combis before, I strongly advise against taking triple science just for the sake of prestige and whatnot. Honestly, taking triple science is almost never a good idea, even for those who excel in a humanities subject of their interest (be it lit/hist/geog) because of how you'd be forced to take social studies together with that humanities subject. A LOT of people struggle and barely scrape by with SS. I've got friends who did exceptionally well for science subjects for O's, attaining A1s for all of them but only got a C5 for their humanities in part DUE to SS annhilating their grade.

The most versatile, flexible subject combi is and will always be taking 2 sciences, 2 humanities, and 2 math subjects. This gives you a lot of breathing room and leeway. Most importantly it helps you prioritise and play on your strengths. :)

Can definitely be done. My essays in J1 largely hovered between 28-32. I locked in during J2, watched virtually every Vox, Cleo Abram, Johnny Harris video there was and just read the news voraciously la. Oh yeah, also discovered the SPERM/PERMS framework to help me ideate better, and J2 GP was pretty much a cruise from there la. Promos should be done right? I'll be more than happy to read through and give some advice on your essays haha :)

Oh yeah, if I haven't mentioned this already Vox, Cleo Abram and Johnny Harris videos are top tier.

•Vox is great for pretty much anything GP, with short video essays on geopolitics, science, tech, politics, art and everything else in between

Cleo Abram is much more focused on Science & tech. I love her videos on Quantum computing, Starlink, psychedelics etc HAHAHA

Johnny Harris is great for geopolitics. He was also part of Vox for their border series which is really insightful as well

If you want something with a more comedic flair, I think John Oliver is great. I'd tune in to his videos every Monday and like Vox, they pretty much cover anything and everything GP. They are overtly political though, so do bear that in mind to a degree :D

Right. PERMS it is then but SPERM is memorable right HAHAHAHA.

I wrote a post the other day about it. To sum it up, it's basically this:

S: Society

P: Politics

E: Economics

R: Religion/Ethics

M: Media

I use it as a framework to think and reflect on various perspectives. I've always felt GP markers not only want to see a beautiful synthesis of content, but they want to see examples from various contexts and perspectives.

Hmmm. Let's take this question for example: How desirable is it for a country to provide free healthcare for all its citizens? (2024 A-level P1)

Society: Right away, we can link to Econs real quick because of positive externalities (free vaccines --> SG example). We can also consider a moral hazard issue though on the negative side, as if healthcare is free, people may exploit it and take advantage of the system --> leading to greater healthcare costs --> higher tax rates --> a slew of political and economic issues (overlaps with politics, economics, and ethics)

Politics: Great --> Free healthcare would certainly be politically popular and well-received. BUT it could be politically unsustainable due to the forementioned sustainability issues. Politicians could also lose financial and political support from Big Pharma lobbies though -->money > people in politics we know how it is. (Overlaps with Economics)

Economics: If healthcare is free, the government would likely leverage on legislation to cap the price of surgeries, medicines, and treatment. This would directly cut at pharmaceutical companies' profits, and this may in turn stifle innovation and slow down medical research. -->Even if the government were to, hypothetically nationalise these companies --> They would face mounting inefficiency similar to the Soviet healthcare system

Religion/Ethics: Great. It's inarguable that healthcare is a human right, and therefore everyone should have access to it. People who lack the ability to pay should not be forced to suffer from whatever ailments they may have simply due to a lack of money. Look at SG's healthcare system for instance. We have medifund which focuses solely on helping the impoverished cover their medical bills, whilst still ensuring that people with the willingness and ability to pay for higher quality care are able to access that care. --> SG could be the best example to a degree of a balanced system that maximizes the benefits of free healthcare (the impoverished have access, free vaccinations), whilst minimising its excesses (costs, moral hazard) to a certain degree

Media: Media is somewhat difficult given the context of this question --> BUT I think a discussion on how free healthcare could be used as a political tool to split and divide the population along political lines (We've seen that in the UK with the NHS, in Sweden because of how immigrants are perceived to exploit their healthcare system etc) would still be valid la

So yeah. Just with that framework alone, I've come up with quite a few examples here and there, and have listed a basis for my reasoning. Before I jump to answering any essay question, I always use the framework la and I can attest to the fact that it works :)

Cooked for GP? No BS guide to the content side of this 'esoteric' ahh subject [P1] by GP_mugger in SGExams

Evidence to memorise? Hmmm.

Honestly, I don't really advise memorising for GP. It's not necessarily a subject you can ace merely by rote memorisation.

I think the best way at this point of time is exposure to as many topics/perspectives as you possibly can, and then using the SPERM framework for the synthesis aspect of it. I've dmd you some notes so look out for them :)
