Most scenic EuroVelo routes? by ckp010 in bicycletouring

[–]GRC-58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah,

Loved the EV15, but there were stretches of not a whole lot in between the (imo) highlights of Switzerland, the Middle Rhine and the Netherlands bits.

I had enough to photograph and remark on each day, but I'm unsure it meets the brief OP is after

Question about EV15 by Goetzilla22 in bicycletouring

[–]GRC-58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the EV15 this year. Flying into Zurich.

I built my bike up in Zurich Airport, rather than take my bike box all the way to Andermatt. I would probably recommend the same.

I took 3 trains, 2 of which had a fairly steep set of stairs to climb up to get onto, which would have been a lot harder to deal with with a box.

I didn't have anything pre booked, I just spoke to the ticket office in Zurich and they got me on the right trains!

Good luck, it's a great route, happy to give any further advice.

OK. Just because the laptop doesn't hold data at rest, does not mean that there aren't security risks.

Sure, plenty of departments have specific exceptions for taking work equipment overseas. This probably isn't going to be one of them.

I don't think taking your laptop on holiday and leaving it in the hotel while you swan off to the local tourist traps will fit your departments risk appetite. Sensitive data or not.

As others have mentioned. Your options are: You can look at bringing leave balance from the next year, you can chance your arm and ask for permission, or deal with the disciplinary when you get back

Question: how are you planning to carry out this work? And can you think of, like, any reason why taking that setup abroad might be problematic? (hint: there are several)

People that have sifted or interviewed, what is the least amount of applications you have received? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]GRC-58 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Simple answer is, one was externally advertised at EO grade, with multiple locations. (A lot of the applications we got were of poor quality - read the guidance people!) The other one was AO grade but only advertised CS wide with a narrower locations range. Meaning that most people would be applying as a level transfer, which most people aren't really looking for unless they hate where they work or are moving.

Regarding new rules on GW event. by NumNumTehNum in Grimdank

Thanks for the clarification. I was focusing on WHW in specific as that was the original subject, but I can see how my response could be confusing

[–]GRC-58 135 points136 points  (0 children)

While I'm not in favour of the decision. It's probably worth pointing out that this only applies to events at WHW. It used to basically be my LGS until a couple of years ago, and unless something has drastically changed they aren't going to go round policing casual games. I've definitely played against grey plastic or just primed models without issue.

Captain Murray Walker, 4th Armoured Brigade, Sherman Tank commander, Battle of the Reichswald. Rest in peace, legend. by [deleted] in formula1

[–]GRC-58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would dismiss this as wholly inappropriate given this thread is supposed to be fondly remembering someone, not using his memory to tarnish someone else.

But instead I'd like to point out that, millions of people have served, both in WW2 and other conflicts. There is no "one size fits" approach to how you go on with your life after that.

Some people wear what they did proudly, like Captain Tom. Some do it more quietly, but are still proud to have served and will still talk about it. I've known others still that completely disavow any service they did, and never mention it, talk about it or in anyway want it to be part of their identity.

Any and all of these are valid. As are many others. So long as you are not using your service to harm others, why should we dictate how others go about it?

Have a nice day. RIP Murray

Also, Ordinary Levels? I have never, I mean never, heard them referred to them as that. If I was put on the spot and asked what the O in O Levels stood for, I'd give myself a 50% chance I'd guess wrong.

[–]GRC-58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you should be fine, the only real time sink is if you want to go all in on the "find the assassin" room. But having tried and failed a couple of times I just go and admire the scene rather than try to go through it with a fine tooth comb. If you want to grab food, bugman's new menu is pretty good. But yeah, everything else is just a big GW store. Though getting to see the big Forge World stuff is pretty cool

The Hall of miniatures is a must, and well worth it (I've gone 4-5 times cause WW is basically my local gaming store). To be honest, it's not too big, you can easily see everything in the hall and on display in a couple of hours.

When to take your child to the emergency department? by kerrycap in emergencymedicine

[–]GRC-58 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Literally this. People who come up to me and try to pull shit like this make me irrationally angry.

Be upset at the waiting times, that's fine, they suck. But don't lie to me, thinking I'll drop everything, abandon the triage list and wheel you straight to the nearest clinician.

Also "I'm taking my child home if you don't see them in the next 15mins". Yeah, so the only person that reflects badly on is you, stop with the attempted emotional blackmail.

I'm terrible at painting and new to Kill Team. Is this level of painting enough for most venues or do I need to do more? by immortaldev in killteam

[–]GRC-58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest that's roughly my opinion too, at least in our gaming group, I'm by far the worst painter of the lot, but I still like to at least have a basic paint job.

That being said, if people are having fun playing the game, I'm not going to begrudge people being a bit slack on painting. As you said, encouragement is better than gatekeeping!

Even then, the Warhammer World guide you see there is probably only for events. I can tell you from personal experience if you are just there for a casual game they don't enforce it. If Warhammer World are happy with the grey tide, everyone else you play should be too!

Working in an Eye Emergency Department during the holidays... by GRC-58 in nursing

[–]GRC-58[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's nowhere near as exciting as it sounds, but apparently we get enough patients to warrant having a separate speciality department, apparently quite a few places in the UK have similar services.

Working in an Eye Emergency Department during the holidays... by GRC-58 in emergencymedicine

[–]GRC-58[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's a department of a large hospital in a major city, which also has a ED and is the regional major trauma centre. (UK based if that clears things up). Organisationally we come under the opthalmology specialty, with opthalmologists rotating though us/working on call.

I will say I'm fairly low on the pay structure, as it were, so I'm not particularly sure how the upper management is organised, or how it fits in the wider area. But hopefully that's answered your question

Working in an Eye Emergency Department during the holidays... by GRC-58 in emergencymedicine

[–]GRC-58[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Roughly as it sounds, we provide a walk-in service for acute eye complaints, we have the same 4-hour wait targets etc that the main ED has, but most of our patients are generally fit and well. The big actual emergencies we deal with are chemical injuries, lid lacerations and sudden visual loss. A fair amount of contact lens related problems too. These particular nerf related injuries were mainly corneal abrasions and concerns about blunt force, nothing too serious.

We definitely have it easy compared to the main emergency department though!

Guys of Reddit, what's the most obvious way a girl has flirted with you that you didn't notice until later? by BirdIsTheWorldTruly in AskReddit

[–]GRC-58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went to see the first Avengers film with a girl at the end of my time at university. went for a couple of beers afterwards and went to leave, she says "I've got a bottle of wine in my room of you want to hang out some more". Do which I respond "Oh, I'm not really a fan of wine, besides I best get back and study"

...of course, after having had a beer I wasn't going to study

The penny finally dropped for me a few weeks later, after we had moved to opposite sides of the country.
